Anne showed up to baby sign language class the other day in her colorful stripey shirt and a spring in her step. I'm pretty sure colorful stripes are the universal sign for Spring. Or maybe it's floral patterns, but stripes are right up there. In any case, she looked great and made me want to run right out and find something stripey. For being so Spring-inspired, she is our March Mom!
I love this outfit for two reasons: color and shape. The shape we've talked about before – trouser jeans with a swingy top that echos the line of the jean. For more info, see our November 2008 Mom.
I love that she picked a nice dark wash for the trouser jean – it elevates everything else. The fun purple and gray stripes are a welcome pop of color for Spring, and her light pink shoes add a little more unexpected color. Anne is both tall and thin, so paring a lighter shoe with the dark trousers works for her. If you are very short, I'd choose a darker shoe to elongate your legs.
Anne has also turned up the cuff of her jeans – but since the underside of the cuff is still dark, it works. Not a bad trick if you want to wear your jeans with both heels and flats.
Lastly, it's hard to see in the pic, but Anne also has on a pair of huge diamond stud earrings. I love the juxtaposition of fancy stud earrings with stripes. So cool.
Anne's trouser jeans are from the Gap, her shoes are Clark's Privos, and her shirt is from Old Navy. None of the items are still available for purchase, but Gap's Bell Jeans are close, and I'm loving the Navy Trumpets from Clark's Privo line (pictured below). They also come in pink!
In terms of finding a fun, stripey shirt like Anne's, here are my favorites for Spring, all available now!
The above tee is Old Navy's V-Neck Tee in Teal Stripe, on sale now for $10. V-necks are great for big boobs — they actually can make them look smaller (compared to a crew neck) — so it's a good choice for breastfeeding moms. This tee will look good with any cute jean, but I'm loving the look of tucking a striped tee into a pair of higher waisted jeans – trouser or sailor style. My fav sailor style jeans are the Shoreman Sailor Jean in Indigo Wash, on sale from eLuxury.com for $129. To keep those legs looking miles long, I'm pairing this outfit with the Navy Clark Trumpets I mentioned above.
The second tee is Lacoste's Long Sleeve Pima Cotton Stripe Scoop Neck Tee in Indian Pink, at Bloomingdales for $75. I like the drape of this top and the fact that it shows off your collarbone. I'd wear this tee with pearl stud earrings, black flats and some slightly destroyed jeans to offset the preppiness. If you are unsure about the whole destroyed-boyfriend jean trend, then Alloy's version, called the Revolt Destroyed Jean Capri (pictured above) is only $37. I love Me Too's Nevada 5 black flats (very cushiony), on sale at zappos.com for $71. You can pair any pearl earring with this outfit, but I found a cool black pearl and diamond earring at sears.com, on sale for $180.
The above shirt is the Hooded Cardigan Tee in Indigo Stripes, on sale for $36 at Victoria's Secret. I love this shirt for many reasons: Navy and white stripes are my favorite, I love the longer length, and the fact that it can be used as a nursing shirt is a huge bonus. I would throw this shirt on with any pair of reliable jeans (like the Sevens shown above) and bright red sneaks for a pop of color. I haven't worn Keds in years, but they seemed to give the outfit more of a French-girl flare than the more athletic looking Converse (which would also work, they just weren't my first pick). The Keds retail for $35 at zappos.com. Lastly, I was excited to find the Virginia Striped Hobo, $27 at delias.com. The thick yellow stripes contrast nicely with the thinner navy and white stripes and the hobo is big enough to carry as a diaper bag. Mixing stripes, when done correctly, just looks so nonchalantly cool.
