Modern Yet Affordable Kid’s Table and Chair Sets

I have spent months looking for the perfect kid's size table and chair set.  I want something modern looking, something that doesn't clash with the rest of the house, and something affordable.  The prices on most cool kid's table and chair sets have soared upwards of $300 or more.  Yikes.  But, there are some on the market that are both cheap and chic.  My guidelines were as follows:

  1. The set must be under $160 for a minimum of one table and two seating options (two chair, two stools, bench, whatever)
  2. No primary colors
  3. I'm looking for something with a slightly modern spin.  They don't have to look like knockoff Eames collection pieces, but I don't want anything shabby chic.  Just clean, simple lines
  4. The table and chairs don't have to match exactly, but they should look cool together
  5. No pictures of kittys, princesses, dinos, etc.

Here are my favorite options:

The obvious choice for modern, affordable kid's furniture is Ikea.  Unfortunately, the only piece that is available online is the chair (above in blue).  If you happen to live close to an Ikea, however, it might be worth the trip:  the total cost for a set of one table and two chairs is $70, and even less if you go with the stools.  All items pictured are part of the Mammut line.  The table shown retails for $39.99, the chair for $14.99 and the stool for $7.99.

Above is P'Kolino's Little One's Table in Chairs in orange, found at moolka.com for $159.99.  This set also comes in white.  I love the generous size of the top, the cheery orange accents and the "Popsicle stick" legs.  Moolka.com offers free shipping on orders over $60.

This next set is actually the set I ended up buying.  It's from Target (Circo brand), and after copious hours of online research, it felt really good to just throw something in my trunk and be done with it.  I couldn't be happier with this purchase – it looks a bit like Offi's Snap table and chairs, but is actually much more stable and has a larger diameter.  The table is now on sale for $45, as are the chairs (2 per set).  Target has free shipping on orders over $50 (and 15% off if you spend over $125, so it might be worth also stocking up on diapers or something).

This next set is virtually a dead-ringer for the Anka by Svan set that retails for $200.  The only differences are the fact that this set, (the Nordic Table and Chairs in Natural) comes only with stools and costs $159.99 at Target.

Shown above are options in the RiverRidge collection, also at Target.  Each item is sold separately, so you can pick and choose your seating options.  This collection comes in turqoise (shown), lime green and pink.  The table retails for $49.99, the chair for $24.99 and the stool for $14.99.

Craft table

A totally different option is the P'Kolino Craft Table.  It comes in either orange (pictured) or white.  I love the whole picnic table throw-back, and the handles on the side for easier transport.  Perfect for folks like us – we are constantly moving the little man's table back and forth from the kitchen to the dining room then back to his room.  This table retails for $110 at plushpod.com.

Lastly, in a pinch, you could try Target's Side Table, $14.99, paired with two Kid's Chairs from the Container Store, $9.99 each.  The side table comes in turquoise, red and white.  You could pair the turquoise table with orange chairs, the red with the pink, etc.  These chairs are actually stackable, and I've stocked up on several for extra kid's seating when entertaining.  Actually, having several of these sets around might be a good idea for holiday parties and playdates with more than just 3 or 4 kids.

Mind reader! I was searching last night for this very thing … alas, no Ikea near me. Thanks for the options!

Funny you should post this – I actually did buy Target’s side table (in black – from earlier in the fall) for our little man. He’s not quite old enough to use a table all the time and we have a small house, so it is the perfect solution for those who need multi-functionality. It can be used as a true side table when not being used for coloring, ect. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is space-challenged. Little chairs fit perfectly underneath it. Who knows if when he’s older we’ll get something else, but for $15, it’s great for now.
