Wear Now and Into Fall: The Chiffon Maxi Skirt, 3 Ways

P8188676

Mamas, it feels like I have spent the last 4+ years wearing nothing but jeans and cut-offs.  Which, you know, is kinda my thing.  But in the days leading up to my sister's wedding, as I (repeatedly) got all gussied up, I realized something:  I like pretty.

But in the case of a chiffon maxi skirt, 'pretty' doesn't translate very well to messy art projects or playground time, or even walking if steps are involved.  Sorry honey – Mum can't hold your hand, she has too much skirt.  Good luck with those stairs, though!

But you know what, Mamas?  Some days…I just don't care.  Some days I don't want to lug around diapers, I don't want to wear flat shoes, and some days I just want to put on a pretty skirt.

Obviously these days will require either a nanny, a husband, or children who calmly watch movies while their crazy mother swans around in chiffon.

Luckily for me, my I NEED PRETTY DAY fell on a Saturday.  And Mike humors loves me.  So out we went – the four of us (Mike carried the diapers). We just walked around, got some ice cream, had a beer.  And you know what?  It really wasn't bad.  I was still able to be involved and have fun.

Ok, so I wasn't super fast during our game of tag.

The key for me was to find an affordable chiffon maxi skirt (I happened upon this one on the clearance rack at Ann Taylor).  Even when I wore this out at night (sans kids), it got stepped on, dragged on the ground when I sat, and was a nightmare in the bathroom.  So yeah:  cheap is good.

I really like these fancy, swirly, swishy skirts paired best with a simple tee.  Tuck it in, or try the knot trick to help hide a stomach pooch.

And when the weather cools?

Denim looks so good with pretty, pretty skirts.  Next date night, this is what I'm wearing.

Best of all?  On a cold fall day, pair these skirts on with a cozy sweater and tall boots.

Mike audibly groaned when I pulled out this sweater. It's my daily winter-wear…and has been for the last four years.

But yeah.  It's the new me.  Once a week month I will dress all pretty-pretty.  Or at least once a quarter.  I mean…four times a year?  That's not too much to ask, right?

Don't worry Mamas – we'll get back to talking about jeans and flats soon enough.  I think I'm still on a high from so much all-night dancing.  Nothing like a few nights out to make a mama feel like a rock star.

xo,

S

Please don’t go back to talking about jeans and flats too soon! I am so grateful for this article! I have a 18 month old and I have to have a pretty day once a week because I can’t stand it when I can’t wear long summer dresses, so I totally get your train of thought. Keep dreaming big dreams, and the skirt is adorable!

This cracked me up because I kept picturing myself out with the family getting ice cream and seeing another mom running after her toddlers in a full chiffon skirt. I don’t know if I would have thought you were crazy or awesome!
I love this blog and think you are pretty awesome in general, so there you go.

Oh my goodness, I need that skirt!! I’m tired of jeans and flats. If I went to Ann Taylor today, do you suppose those skirts are still around?

Shana, as always you look beautiful. I love that skirt and I’ve tried to find long and flowy, pretty skirts but I always feel like I’m trying to hard when I wear them. I feel like I’m playing dress up. Although who freaking cares, right?!
    I’m on the hunt now.

Ok – updated the post with outfit deets. Sorry Mamas – completely forgot. But my SANDALS! I can’t find them again to save my life. I bought them last March at a Nine West Outlet for….$9. NO JOKE. $9. So I bought both black and gray, natch. Anyway, the style name is “Catch My Eye” in case you get lucky. I couldn’t find a thing online.
Jen – SO glad I’m not alone!! Will promise to add a bit more pretty from time-to-time!
Jess -Me too! Am dying for a pair of pale pink skinnies…like blush pink. I’d wear them with navy, maroon, etc.
Melissa – I totally get that. I did feel like a crazy person. And got a few stares. :)
Emily M – I got lucky….the skirt was already on the clearance rack. But you know how that goes. Oh! And they were going to order one for me (until I found one in my size) so it’s worth a try!
Kristen – I know exactly what you mean. That’s why I tend to wear mine with the same stuff I wear with jeans: tees, denim jacket, fuzzy old sweater. I need the balance too.
Emily – LOVE that Halston skirt. HOLY MOLY WOW.

Claudia!!  I updated the post for you!  LOL  But the jacket is by Joe's Jeans, and bought roughly 10 years ago!  They currently have a cropped version that's cute: http://www.zappos.com/joes-jeans-cropped-jacket-in-millicent-millicent
But to be honest, I find that traditional Old Navy and Gap's do come close. I love this one, for roughly half the cost:  http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=5739&vid=1&pid=243730&scid=243730002
The one thing I'll say for Joe's Jeans….the denim is crazy-soft.
    xoxo

This post is inspiring me to dig out my longer skirts in preparation for the fall – would love to see a post on how we can pair boots and longer skirts together? I’ve got two new pairs of boots that I’ve been dying to wear once the weather cools off, and I’d love to see if I could pull them off with longer skirts. Any suggestions?

I love your outfits–all three! A while back, I was looking at my little girls dressed from head to toe in their princess dress-up clothes and decided that I really wanted to feel just PRETTY, too. So I went out and bought a couple of inexpensive maxi dresses. Those dresses, plus a couple of more have been my daily spring/summer/early fall (we’re in the deep south, so it’s hot until October many times) uniform for the last two years. At first, I did feel a bit like I was swanning around, but after a while, I realized that I just feel right–just like myself. I suppose it helps that I, and my two girls, are all three really, really prissy, but why not feel pretty? As to the moving around–it’s like walking in heels. Once you’re used to it, you manage just as well. I’m so glad you posted that cold weather styling, I’m always kind of sad when cold weather hits and I make the switch back to jeans and boots. Thanks for this great blog!
