Shop Your Closet: Pile on the Plaids (Even if they don’t match)

PB102357

Trying too hard almost always backfires for me.  Like when I try to match.  In any way.   I end up looking too matchy-matchy or just…off.  And feeling horribly uncomfortable.  My best outfits are often the ones I just threw together.  So when I came across the following Gap ad…well

Unknown Gap Stylist, thank you for saving me from myself.

I love this idea.  And really, with all of the mixed prints lately…why not?  Especially when you can anchor the look with rockin' black denim.

PB102341

(wearing: Stylemint Waverly Shades, $30, and Lola skinnies in black,$60, J.Crew flannel – similar style, J.Crew men's wool plaid scarf – similar, MIA Buckaroo boots, now sold out, but here are ones with a similar fold-over for only $109)

Throwing a plaid scarf over a flannel is obviously taking the easy way out.  So this past weekend, when shopping with my mama (yay!) I doubled up on plaid flannels:

Skinny denim haters, this outfit is for you

Photo (74)

(wearing:  J.Crew flannel - similar style, Cropped plaid from Vintage Havana – similar here by LNA, Mother Denim "The Drama' High Waist Flares, $220, Dansko Rhianna boots, a few sizes are available here for $107, or try the Nakita boot, $195 for a similar heel and studded toe, my fringe bag is old…here's a similar one from Threadsense.)

So in summary, when it comes to super-soft cozy flannel…more is more?  Yeah, baby.  Color me plaid.

xo,

S

Ooh I could totally do that-I have a plaid shirt I love and a plaid scarf I love and they don’t match…so they’d be perfect for this, right?? Lol. I’m 6+ months pregnant so there aren’t too many trends that fit right now without buying a bunch of new stuff, but this is one that would!

Everything always looks so darling on you. Could you show more “wrong ways to do it”, so that its easier to recognize the parts that make it work? I feel like if I wore 2 flannel shirts that my friends would all ask me if I was pregnant again.

Love this! And FYI… low-heeled MIA boots (I have the Buckaroos) are the most comfortable things EVER. I have walked all day long with two babies over cobblestones in these things and haven’t felt a thing. Highly recommend MIA boots!

Hey! Is that Iggy Pecks friend! My son said that was his favorite outfit from the book, probably bc he has the red cons already. Lookin good Raines as always!
Wish I had those black mia boots. I have a flannel shirt just hnging in the closet, I never wear it, maybe its time to try and put some life back into it.

Hey mamas, just thought I’d mention that amazon is having an amazing sale on designer and name brand jeans, like 50% off right now! Since I still wont be able to participate in this deal :( dang joblessness, I’ll pass it on to you all in the hopes that someone can benefit!

Cute looks, but I’m more interested in your hair. It has been looking fab! Any secrets you would like to share??

Hmmm…not really. After we moved it took a LOOONG time to find someone to cut/color my hair. Meaning: I tried a few people who screwed it up. It’s just now getting back to the color I love. Sigh. And with all of this humidity out here, my hair gets big. Like, huge. So Alyssa (who I LOVE) put a ton more layers into it.
OH WAIT! Em, blowouts are pretty cheap around these parts. I’ve been doing that a bunch too. (Not in this post…but if my hair is looking super fab, it’s a sure bet it’s been blown out.) LOL

Yeeeeees….I will try. Actually…I kinda like this idea. The pics wouldn’t be all that great (just iPhone photos in front of the mirror) but there would certainly be some funny ones. And one hell of a messy bedroom. But we’re all friends here, right? :)
Thanks for the fun idea, Jenny!

Shana, do you happen to know the dimensions of your scarf? It looks so generous and cozy, but I’m no fool. Some manufacturers really scimp on the length. I would love a wide, lengthy scarf to wrap around my neck more than once. Thanks!

Haha! I should try that (blowout). Maybe more layers for me as well. My hair is just so bleh in the winter.

Boot/jean challenged question in 3…2….1….: So the Moto boot..I have the Vince Camuto Shada (in black)..love them! However (I usually hate “howevers”) my jeans bunch like mad..and not in a flattering way.. above the boot. I even tried tucking my jeans into socks..no go. My jeans are skinny, but not a true “legging skinny”..is this my problem? I noticed your jeans looked SO GOOD tucked into those boots. Is it the style of jeans I am missing, or is there another trick I don’t know about? Help, please!
