Mom Street Style: Casey’s 10 Perfect Pieces For Late Winter / Early Spring

Mamas!  For Mom Street Style this week we have something a little different.  New mom Casey is sharing not only a pic, but her top ten favorite pieces of clothing.  We're talking about her most-used, hardest working, ten favorite pieces.  So without further ado…here's Casey.

Hi!  I’m a new mom, enjoying life staying home several days a week with my son in Northwest Philadelphia. I’m a former kindergarten teacher and elementary administrator, now working part-time as an instructional coach in a turnaround school in North Philly.  I'm also dabbling in some writing and figuring out what’s next!

I swore to myself that I wouldn’t give into the temptation of wearing yoga pants every day as a new mom, but I’m not gonna lie; since the birth of my son I’ve definitely rocked my Lululemons more than I'd care to admit.  That said, I’ve been relatively successful in avoiding the mommy uniform, especially after I grew accustomed to my new life and body.

The changes I’ve encountered since becoming a mom have included not only a new chunky little sack of cute named Oliver, but also a transition from a full time job to a part-time gig and some undesirable (though totally worth it) changes to my figure.  As a result, my wardrobe has morphed into a collection of comfy, easy, versatile clothes that cover my new mom pooch and still maintain a sense of style and fun.  By mining my existing closet and purchasing a few new pieces, I’ve come up with a rotation of several items that I can mix and match.  My outfits must be suitable for walking to the farmer’s market with my little guy, going to my part-time job at an elementary school, or walking to a local restaurant for a family dinner.

Though I certainly wear more than just these 10 pieces (and add my own flair with accessories – especially long circle scarves, which do wonders in camouflaging the belly), I have whittled down my list to just my 10 most crucial pieces for the late winter/early spring.

1. Chambray Shirt

Mine is actually from J Crew Factory, but the color is no longer available.  Madewell's Perfect Chambray Ex-Boyfriend Shirt $70, is close.

2. Striped Tee

I like a classic navy and white striped tee.

(Pictured: Dorothy Perkins Tee, $30)

3. Sweater Coat/Long, Patterned Cardigan

I found mine on Loemann’s clearance rack.  I chose a heavier, coat-style so that I can wear it as a coat in moderately chilly weather and layer under the fatigue jacket for colder weather.

(Pictured:  Warehouse Fairisle Cardi, currently on sale for $64)

4. White V-Neck Tee

Personally, I like J.Crew's white slub t-shirts…

5. Leopard Print Flats

My favorite flats are Madewell Sidewalk Skimmers.  (Currently on sale for $89 )

6. Military Anorak

My anorak is olive and from the Gap, but they are no longer have any in stock. I did find a lightweight version at American Eagle. I wear mine with jeans, khakis, cords, black pants and even over my workout gear.

(Pictured: Calvin Klein Fur Trimmed Coat, on sale for $105)

7.  LOFT Black skinny jeans

I love my LOFT curvy skinny black jeans (stock is really low right now, but keep checking back). They are as comfortable as leggings, but much more finished looking and cover a multitude of figure flaws that leggings can sometimes accentuate. I wear them to work because you can’t even tell they’re jeans.

8. LOFT Dark rinse skinny jeans

Again, after having a baby, I searched for affordable new jeans that would flatter my slightly pear-shaped figure and found the LOFT curvy skinny jeans.  Like I said, I LOVE them.

9. Gray Tall Boots

Gray is my favorite neutral because it’s a little bit unexpected, yet looks great with just about anything.  Mine happen to be Steven Madden (here's a similar pair).

(Pictured: Cole Haan's Cassie boot, on sale for $247)

10.  Minnetonka Mocs

These are my super comfy casual shoes and are a great option for anyone looking for an alternative to Uggs (though they certainly aren’t as warm).

(Pictured: Minnetonka Feather Kilty Mocs, on sale for $42)

So, that’s my list as of right now! As the season changes and I continue to move closer to my goal of reaching my pre-baby weight, I’m sure some of my rotation will change, though I think several of these pieces are definitely here to stay.

Thanks, Casey!!  I love this little peak into another mom's closet.  Fun, right?  If anyone else wants to play along, feel free to send in a pic, and links to your favorite pieces!  (It doesn't need to be 10.  Five is easier for me – HA – or it can even be just one or two.)  Let us know why these pieces are your favs.

Awesome inspiration, Casey!  Thank you so much!

ps.  Mamas, I have had TEARS in my eyes numerous times today…from laughing at your hysterical comments on the leggings pants/not pants debate.  You chicks crack my shiz up.

funny, i just did a post on my own postpartum uniform today.
I’m also in love with my Minnetonka mocs. I have them in grey thunderbird and wear them constantly. agreed: Love this peek into other mamas’ closets!

My favorite right now are a pair of Levi’s Capital E skinny jeans that I found at Goodwill for $8 (!) and a slouchy loose sweater similar to this http://www.lyst.com/clothing/kensie-open-stitch-stripe-sweater-sugar-mix/ that I layer over a tank top on warmer days (I live in the southwest) or a long-sleeve tee shirt on colder ones. It’s nursing friendly (tee down, sweater up) and cozy-fall-looking without being overly warm or bulky – I think it would be a good transition-outfit for a place with more normal seasons, too.

Is it true that you should go down a size for Minnetonka mocs because they stretch a bit?? All cute stuff by the way!
