Neon, For Grown Ups

P3064053

I carry a little man around on my back.  I am responsible for both providing food and wiping butts at regular intervals.  I am – heavily – relied on by two tiny people who yammer at me all day. "Mum! Mum! Mum! Mumumumum!!!" until I hear myself echoing the empty threat of my mother:  "No more 'MUM'!  I'm going to change my name!"

They give me the same strange look that I used to give her.  For all of these reasons (and more…so much more)…I am, officially, grown up.

Here's how this grown-up (who also happens to be ever-so-slightly color adverse) wears neon:

Neon + Navy

Neon is so expected with black…which is why I think navy is a fresher choice.  Even when the navy comes in the form of my, uh, much-loved, ratty turtleneck sweater.

I know someone is starting a petition to rid this blog of that sweater.  Don't bother.  IT. WILL. BE. BACK.

(wearing: sweater -  mine's ancient, but this one would be fabulous… jeans - this pair but mine have patches… shoes -  c/o Tieks Unmellow Yellow)

Neon + Creamy Neutrals

Got something cream?  Off-white or blushy?  Nude?  Even a pair of old khaki pants?  Yup.  These all pair perfectly with neon.   It's like they tone the neon down to a manageable glare.  A dull roar of color, if you will, much like my children's "inside voices".

P3064090

(wearing: shirt -  similar… jeans - this pair without patches but I'm dying for this pair of patched denim.. shoes -  c/o Tieks Unmellow Yellow)

Long time readers may remember we covered something like this two (yes, two!!) years ago.  We blatently copied some fashion week glamazon who wore neon with khaki, army green, and leopard print.  I think that my have been my subconscious inspiration for the cream + neon pairing.

The neon + navy pairing?  My inspiration came from Raines' windbreaker.

Digging for shells with Nana.  You should've seen what we dug up.  Jack. Pot.

But tell me…is anyone else falling deeply in love with neon?  I might actually dive in and do more than just flats.  This top would make khakis so freaking cool…or I'd tuck a cream-colored tee into lightwash denim and finish with this belt.  And don't even get me started on the gorgeousness that is this scarf.  It's a little pricy, but is handmade in Ethopia by actual people paid fair wages.

xo,

Seriously? I just literally bought that neon yellow belt yesterday (and the pink one, and the mint green one…).
I’m not a big fan of neon (kind of overdosed on it in the 80′s) but love using it as an accent. Digging the flats lady. Just saying.

This is so strangely timely—I am trying to decide about a pair of neon pink shorts (yes really) RIGHT NOW. They’re the J. Crew chino shorts, and I’ve coveted them for ages and ages. Finally ordered them, only to find that when they said “neon azalea” they meant it with the “neon” part. The color is WAY brighter than it appears online. It is a true neon pink. I am honestly stumped with whether a 42-year-old mom of two can get away with wearing neon pink shorts all summer. (I’m fit and slim, but…I’m 42, you all.) Am considering exchanging them for another bright (but non-neon). But just am not sure. Help?!

Okay – I did the neon thing the first time around, and in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m sitting here ready to go to work wearing neon yellow skinnies, and a neon yellow and grey striped sweater. Oh, with a neon yellow belt. So. I guess that is my answer as to whether I would a) wear neon, and b) feel it is appropriate for a mom of forty-cough-cough-three. Yes and Yes.

♪Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got til its gone♪ Love hearing “Nana, Nana, Nana!” And that picture! Great day on the beach finding shells with Raines and Pax. xxoo

Thank goodness I’m not the only mama who’s into neon. Yellow, especially. I don’t know if it is because I’m tired of the wintry gray and brown outside (which is at least starting to get dotted with daffodils!) or if it just feels fresh. I know we all wore it in the 80s, but I think these sophisticated pops of color are just so refreshing. I’m loving neon with gray. I just bought a neon yellow and gray striped sweater and I wore that yellow belt on Easter Sunday over a gray cardigan with a denim pencil skirt and orange flats. If I wasn’t chasing two boys all day I would totally rock a pair of neon yellow pumps, but I’ll probably settle for Chuck Taylor’s or ballet flats instead. I also saw this look last week on a petite blog that I peruse… http://laviepetite.blogspot.com/2013/03/neon-and-other-things.html?m=1

My favorite Spring update to my maternity wardrobe is going to be neon-ish colored sports bras or pull over bras that will have the look of a tank layered under neutral tanks and maxis for spring/summer. Easy, comfy and fun!

I love taking color inspiration from my baby’s cuter clothes. In fact, now that you point it out, T’s easter dress was khaki/cream and neon orange. Great post!

I don’t currently have any neon in my wardrobe but circa 2006 I had a short sleeved blue and neon yellow striped sweater that I loved wearing with khakis, it was unexpected but toned down enough and of course no one else was wearing neon then so I sent it to Goodwill after a season and now (like every other trend in the history of trends) it would be totally current and I wish I had it back!

I have the same pair of shorts. My favorite shirt to wear with them is cream with black polka dots. This summer I’m going to expand based on this to cream and navy. Try a bunch of shirts and see how you like it. Fit, slim, and 42 sounds perfect to me! If you try a few things and love it, you can definitely pull it off. However, if you can’t seem to get comfortable, return them. It’s all about how you feel in clothing.

Hmmmmmm…..I usually hate neon, all neon. But you make it look so….sophisticated.
I am going to have to go away and get used to this idea.

Keep them, they are fun! I got last year’s version and the brightness does wash out a bit after a few wears, still bright but more of a, using S’s term, “kid’s inside voice” bright. Pair it with navy or charcoal and you are good to go!

I am using my mom’s “you only have one brother in the world so you better be nice to him” line that she used with me and my sister. Geez Louise!
I feel a post about some more colorful clothes from ANMJ coming soon… heh heh

Anybody find some neon flats that are not this pricey? Could you post a link? Don’t want to invest that much in the trend…

Belinda, My favorites are the Vince Camuto “ellen” flat (they fit my feet very well and are very comfy for me) I have them in cobalt, tomato, and leopard..I love their yellow! (If the budget allowed I would get them, but I’m hoping they will go on sale :) I hope this helps!

Thank you, Frances! So glad to get some fashion-advice input! My husband is no help in that regard. ;) Seriously, did the color shock you when you first saw them?? Am I the only person who thought the color online looked a LOT tamer?!

  • Shannon
    April 3, 2013

Meg: Exactly. I have not tried them on with other clothes of mine yet (or even laid them out with other items to look at outfit possibilities). I think I will try that! I love the cream and navy idea….I LOVE navy and hot pink, in general (just have never had anything THIS hot pink!). Thank you!

I don’t think I can pull off neon like you. I just have visions of my 6th grade self in neon spandex bike shorts and an oversized “RELAX” t-shirt. And worse than that, I have visions of other kids wearing neon bike shorts (until they were officially banned at school). Perhaps I’m a bit traumatized by my experience with neon in 1988, but hopefully it will change to a new appreciation :) It does give hope for summer with a fun pop of color, no?

I fought the scarf and the scarf won. (The J Crew one you posted.) I will let you know how it is. Maybe I’ll even do a picture of it as integrated with my current winter-to-spring momiform!
Speaking of momiform pieces, I followed your advice and got a v-neck tee from Everlane, and it is awesome!!! I also sprang for this beautiful scarf (I’m having an extended scarf moment): https://www.everlane.com/collections/essential-scarves/products/spring-scarf-striped-sky and have been wearing it just about every day since, enjoying a superb cost-per-wear rationalization. (Hence the Ishi scarf seeming like a very reasonable purchase…it will make all my neutrals look super cool, I think!)
