My New Favorite Way To Make White Jeans Cooler (Hint: Graphic Tee)

White denim is a thing out here in Phila's mainline.  A BIG thing.  Mike and I went out in Wayne last summer, to a new(ish) Mexican place and I KID YOU NOT every single woman was wearing white jeans, a white skirt, white shorts or a white dress.

(I was wearing my super-short cut-offs and heels.  Oops.)

But isn't that crazy??  100% of the women!  All in white with some kind of preppy Lilly/Tory/etc top or shoe or bag or something!  It blew my mind.  But to be fair, it hasn't happened since (at least not everyone in the bar), but man.  That one night shows some serious cultural commitment to preppy white denim.

And I do like preppy…but in smaller doses, perhaps, than the typical mainline Mama.  So for the past few summers, I've been trying to figure out how to rock my white denim without falling into the whole Mainline Mom Uniform.  Not that it's a bad thing…it's just not really my thing.

My thing is strange hand positions.

(wearing: old UO shirt...white jeans c/o Shop Adorn…old Stylemint sunnies…sandals -same but brown instead of bronze

Last summer, I was into pairing white denim with blush, army green, or dark chambray.  And I still love those combos.  But this summer, I'm really crushing hard on the graphic tee trend.

I actually got this idea from Emerson Frye (pinned it here)…crazy good, no?  But I'm still looking for my perfect graphic tee.  I do like the one I have on…but…something else is out there, Mamas.  It calls to me…I can feel it….

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find it. I typically like graphic tees with words rather than pictures…and I'm a pretty die-hard white tee with black letters kind of girl.  I'm not totally opposed to a design (and I love the bright red dot japanese flag in my tee above)…but…what?  Why is this so hard?  I need to stop over-thinking.  I'm starting to treat my next graphic tee like a tattoo.  GET OVER SELF, S.

Anyways…here are a few graphic tees that have caught my eye.

Graphic tees

1.  Word T Emerson Frye, $68

This one makes me laugh every time.  Every. Time.  I also love the boyish fit.

2. Silence T, Duke & Winston, $32

Some days, Mamas, this is all I crave.  That's all.  Just the sound of….nothing.  One would think it wouldn't be too much to ask.  ONE WOULD THINK.

3. Great Lakes Surfer, Third Coast Surf Shop, $24

In case you were wondering, you can surf the Great Lakes.  MICHIGAN, WHAT?  IS AWESOME THAT'S WHAT.

4.  Nerd T, Textile Elizabeth and James, $92

Gosh, a nerd tee.  It's like I'm coming home.  Also available in hippie or poet.  (I've been waiting my whole life to say that.)

But you know what I really want? (Or at least I think I want?)  A tee with this on it:

Right??  Ummm…I am assuming there are other Le Petit Prince fans out there.  Anyone?

[awkward silence]

Well.  It turns out that I am not alone because you can actually buy a t-shirt like this here.  Voila.  I am justified.

Well this hippie can’t afford the hippie tee but I sure do like it. Also, my lovely husband just got me my first pair of birkenstocks (gizehs) on a recommendation found somewhere on this blog :), his pair is 20 years old.

LOL I laugh because I went to college in Wayne and now live 10 minutes from there and YES! You are 100% correct – Philly loves their white. Of course, I do too…it’s my favorite color bottom to wear in the summer. 🙂 I haven’t ventured into Lily territory yet though. That just seems pushing it. LOL

I am a sucker for gray graphic tees. I could own a million and still pick up another. I’ll be styling mine up with some white denim this week. 🙂

Okay, I am committed to finding a few cool graphic tees for the summer. I think it’s going to be trickier than it appears, however, to hunt these down. It’s kind of a fine line between cool and dorky.
Any other websites that you can recommend with cool t’s? I think I am going to have order that surfer shirt . . . a west coast girl now, but I was born and raised on Lake Michigan soil!

Haha, did you ever see the movie with Gene Wilder? My sis and I wanted to watch it all the time when we were little, and my mom thought we were weird for liking it.
On another subject, what’s your opinion on a band tee? I wouldn’t wear one for a long time because there was no band I loved enough, but then I found one that was the cover of Queen’s Greatest Hits album and it was perfect.

And they’ll ship the Le Petit Prince t shirt to New Zealand. Unheard of! J’adore!

I just ordered some white (maternity) shorts! I’m envisioning them w/ oversized navy sweaters (I’m in Maine, so layers are key even in the summer) and silver Birkenstock Gizehs, actually.

Homage T-shirts are so cool and so soft! I have a few of them and I can wear my Ohio State pride without looking like a typical sports fan.
    This is my favorite:

Talk about over-thinking a tee like a tattoo: I had scenes from Le Petit Prince tattooed on my back when I was 20. I wish I could take it off like a tee shirt.

I’m obsessed with graphic tees! I’m always on the hunt for cool ones; it’s basically my summer momiform! Junkfood has cute ones as well as Original Retro Brand. My sister turned me on to The Mitten State for all this Michigan related. You should totes get this one, S 😉

eh, graphic tees aren’t my bag…I have none, and the few times I’ve bought them, well, they just feel fake. However, I love white jeans. With everything, all the time. Navy, grey, black, orange, teal, floaty, sweatshirty, sweatery, whatever. Love them.

S, any suggestions for perfect fitting white denim? You know- thick enough to hide pockets/lumps/unmentionables, but still summery? Thx!

You look so cute, but I just can’t. I don’t feel “dressed” in a graphic tee. I end up feeling like I’m bumming around all day. Or like I should be doing yardwork. Maybe I should try again for an edgier vibe. any tips for avoiding the “pajamas” feeling ?
