Styling Cold Weather Workout Gear For All Day…Part 2 (Sponsored Post)

First, grab some MC Hammer pants-  WAIT!  Where are you going?  COME BACK!!!

No but seriously.  I do love these pants.  So.  On days I find myself stuck in workout gear all day long, here's what's working:

1.  Slouchy pants + sneaks = urban chic

Sneakers are having a huge moment, but the key to chic sneaker styling is to pair them with something other than yoga pants.  However, if you are actually trying to work out…then what?  Leggings are good, but I'm kinda loving the slouchy pant.  Not only do they give your whole look an urban vibe, but they are perfect for layering over those tiiiny little tight shorts I love to work out in (but would rather not walk around in).

2.  Layer a Flannel Shirt and Soft Jacket Over a Workout Tee

Do you remember our old article about the Rule of Three?  Apply it here.  Wearing three tops makes for a more interesting outfit and gives you an easy pop of color (not to mention the practicality of layering in general).

3.  Don't Forget The Hat

Add a hat.  Or some cool gloves.  (You know I love lipstick.)  These little things finish the look.  The vibe is still effortless, but effortlessly coolrather than I-used-up-all-of-my-effort-wiping-butts-this-morning. (Which…yes totally I get that.)

Want to recreate?  I've teamed up with Nordstrom to do this little series on workout gear, and found some ah-mazing stuff. Here are a few outfit ideas, based on my very favorite pieces from their activewear collection.

Option 1 – Stripes and Plaid

Extra points for mixing prints.  And the shiny mesh baseball hat really knocks it out of the park. (BTW – the exact pants and shoes I'm wearing above are pictured below.)

Option 2 – Lighten Up

I tend to workout in black with a slight pop of black, but there's no reason one couldn't add in some softer tones…right?  And I'm willing to bet that the chic gray jacket, hat and sneaks would look great paired with anything.  (I'd wear orange lipstick.)

Any other tips for styling workout gear all day long?  What do you Mamas do?

xo,

S

ps.  While Nordstrom is sponsoring this post, all thoughts, opinions, recommendations and product choices are my own.

Here are a few more pairs of slouchy pants that would work for this look…..

My slouchy pants on the cheap for readers with sewing machines–Men’s black knit pajama pants, tapered on your sewing machine. I did this originally to get a longer inseam but found that they are so stinking cheap at TJmaxx/marshalls that I’ve made a few pairs. And they are long enough!!

I have a pair of similar pants from H&M, and I love them! Great looks!

I don’t know how you do it… I swear if I wore that outfit out in public I would look like a hobo, but you look like you stepped off a runway! That being said, I’m kind of obsessed with that stripy workout tank and both pairs of shoes. I’m about to start a DietBet next week, so if I can get through that (and win)… then I’m treating myself with something fun!!

Crap, I don’t think my comments are showing up again. =(

    Oh yay, that one worked…
What I was going to say is that I don’t know how you do it. If I wore that exact outfit I would look like a hobo, but you look awesome!
I’m loving both pairs of shoes on your moodboard and really love that pooch hiding stripy tank. I’m starting a DietBet next week, so if I can get through that (and win), I’m going to have to treat myself with something fun!!

Of course, this one showed up…but my actual comment on your outfit did not…
    Anywho, looks great mama!

Shana, have you ever tried Athleta? They also have clothing that works for wearing workout clothing all day. I am a first time mamma, and I love them to hide the pooch and absorb my baby’s drool! :)

Been a reader of the blog for about a year. Diagnosed just yesterday with infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Ugh. Really don’t know any of the details yet but I’m about to learn. I know it is going to be a long haul. I will definitely take inspiration from how you have gotten through this. You were planning outfits and blog posts and instagramming for Christ’s sake!! And have little ones!! Wish me luck and I’m wishing all the best for your continued health.

I love the look of harem pants so much! I’m about to have baby #3 and would love some for lounging around after he’s here, but I have such a fear of what they would actually look like on. Does anyone have a success story of curing harem-pants-aphobia?

This may be about styling workout clothes but reviving the rule of 3 post and talking mixed prints just makes me happy! If only you could have randomly snuck in that Emerson Frye pic too!

No No No NO NO!!! I always love your outfits but you are off with this one. Today all you achieved was a tired old mum look, please forget the exercise gear and go back to being stylish Shana.

Maree – I laughed OUT LOUD reading this comment. “Tired old mum?” Really? Cause Chick….I’ve looked A LOT worse. I’ve done the ‘tired old mum’ thing more times than I’d like to admit in the last six years and honey: this ain’t it.
I totally get that you don’t love this look, but you can hardly claim it’s ‘tired old mum’. Let’s lower our expectations to reasonable levels, shall we? :)

Yes – order from Nordstroms. Free return shipping and an unbeatable return policy. True story. :)
(But seriously – I’ve been on the fence with harem pants too. I had to keep putting mine on and taking them off a million times before my eyes adjusted to what I was seeing. But today? I like them again.) :0

So I confess I can’t get into the harem pant thing, but I don’t think I have to want to adapt the style myself for it to be stylish. IMO you look like an on-trend mama making an effort, S, not the tired old mum I was sporting my hubby’s huge button-up because it was effortless (and NOT in the good way) for nursing twins. And if I were a lot of inches and pounds smaller I’d want to steal that moto jacket right off your back! ;)

I think you look great. Love the whole thing – does not at all look like frumpy athletic wear. I am a former New Yorker, so more critical than most of the whole american sweat clothing thing. You don’t even come close to that!

I’ve been watching this whole MC Hammer trend with amused patience waiting for it to end… but I will admit, you look totally awesome. Of course. I don’t think they would work on me, because I’m carrying lots of weight around the middle and feel like I need to wear somewhat tight pants to show that I’m not just one huge blob of big. But I do have a question – how do they FEEL on? I have a big stride and my favorite work out is a long brisk walk before the kids wake up. I just always thought these pants would feel restrictive and weird if I were to actually do serious walking in them. But I guess if they for hammertime….
