Sooo…Let’s Chat About This White Sneaker Trend

If you happened to catch the latest podcast from The Happiest Home, you already know my thoughts on the white sneaker trend:  TRICKY.

White sneakers – as in truly white, bright sneakers are arguably one of the biggest trends this Spring. And we’re not talking just classic Converse, we’re talking all manner of white sneaks. Even sneakers that start look suspiciously like sneakers worn by the medicare set.  Seriously, with some of these I can’t tell the difference.  But since we’re all about casual style over here on TME, I felt it was my job, nay, my duty to investigate further.

Converse?  Too easy.  Converse are classics, and besides Cam already rocked some white converse.

Big, huge, functional white sneaks?  With thick bottoms and tons of stability?  That’s the “HA HA HA NO” category.  I’ll never be cool enough to pull these off.  (Some can, but NOT MOI.)

So.  Let’s focus on the white sneaks that are nudging me out of my comfort zone.  I love them on others (oh how I love them on others) but the proof is in the wearing and I have been STRUGGLING.  You have to achieve that perfect balance of chic and unstudied nonchalance to really rock the white sneak.  Also?  Coats help. (As do cheekbones and long flowing locks but whatever.)

So….my white sneaks and I have been playing around a little bit.  We’ve successfully nailed the Aging Cheerleader look, the Where’s My Patchwork Vest look, and the Don’t Worry, My Real Shoes Are in My Bag look.  But I wanted more, you know?  [snort]  And there’s no denying that when done right, white sneaks can bring a certain (blinding) freshness to an ensemble.

So here’s a formula that’s been done to death on Pinterest (black skinnies + coat + white sneaks), but it works with my lifestyle and….looks alright, I think.

Also?  I’m wearing my beloved Smartwool socks and it’s…fine.  It works.

coat: Everlane trench, Sage (size XS for reference) – my fav trench/raincoat (it’s totally water resistant!)

top: Wilt Baby Thermal Tee (now 30% off….I’ve barely taken it off since I got it, size XS for reference)

jeans: Rag and Bone Shredded Skinny Jeans (wearing a 25 for reference)

sneaks: Adidas Stan Smiths (for little girls)

backpack: Ecoalf backpack (environmentally friendly company – now on super sale)

other accessories: Free People Lace Halter bra in black, Smartwool hiking socks (navy or black), Ray-Bans

Ok.  Underwhelming perhaps, but….different. And sometimes different is just what I need.

But here’s the real test of the white sneak:  Will I actually reach for them when I have other sneakers in my closet?  Put another way….

Do we like them better than my most-worn sneak, my black converse?

Sneaker Showdown!  Big White Sneaks vs Black Converse Hightops!

Sooo….which do you prefer?  After we shot these pics, Mike and I were going to grab a quick drink (the kids were with the nanny).  “Babe, should I wear the white sneaks or my black converse sneaks for our date?” I asked.  And then I groaned as my words sank in.  “Ooooo…” he grinned.  “You mean your sexy black sneakers or those big white ones?”

I think you can guess his pick.

“Sexy black sneakers,” uttered only half in jest…man, I love this guy.

Happy Weekend!

And in case you are as intrigued by the white sneaker trend as I….here are a few iterations worth trying:

Lastly, here’s that #dressingroomselfie I have of the Adidas superstars.  I….almost.  I almost loved them.  So cute from the front, but too puffy from the side.  (Maybe OE could rock these?  Scotti has already declared herself a no sneaker zone, and Cam is set on her chucks.)

Love that bald little baby head peekin’ out behind me.  It’s baby Greenlea!  (Scotti’s babe and one of the new loves of my life).

ANYWAY.  Thoughts on white sneaks?

I don’t love the white sneakers except for the converse and the pair with the heart on them. But, totally off topic, I love your hair in these pictures.

Thank you!! It’s been a total pain to style these days. So I appreciate this comment!

I’m just glad you’ve finally worn something that doesn’t look amazing on you. 😛 No white sneaks. And do you have more detail on that shimmery skirt hanging in the dressing room in the final pic? 🙂

Too many white shoes look like mall walkers but I still love Cams in her Chucks….maybe because they’re broken in? I always feel like white shoes need to be a little dirty.

I totally love the Chucks, have a pair that I bought inspired by this blog (pre-Cam). But the others? When I got my J Crew catalog and white sneakers were listed about the timeless pieces, I was like, since when? I remember when white sneakers were exactly what you describe: for the medicare set. Not that long ago. Like, why not Keds too? It’s fine, everybody wear what you want, but I will not be fooled into thinking this is anything but a trend that will not last. The white button up shirt they also highlighted? That’s actually timeless.

I keep seeing that halter bra in your posts and I’m going to shop at Nordstrom for the first time ever because I just LOVE it!!!

Love the black hightops and the white converse, the others are a bit “sporty” for me to pull off. I find converse a bit flat and not so comfy, so for me a similar sneaker which I love to wear, even in white is the Bensimon… so simple and stylie with most outfits.

A San Diego mama weighing in here – I say no to the white sneaker unless you are: 1) a big dude wearing white air jordans, 2) are the age where AARP starts sending you mail and have just had a hip replacement, or 3) are my sweet stepdad. If you are my stepdad, you must wear Kirkland white sneakers with white crew socks, shorts, and a polo. (My mama married for love, not fashion sense.)

Your hair does look super cute! I’m also growing out a pixie and this length is making me want to cut it off again.

I have some girlie white converse (Jack Purcell maybe? I forget.) that I wear in the spring when it’s still too cool for flats and flip flops. But those big clunky white sneaks? No thanks. I’m kind of over this extreme normcore nonsense.

I think the ones you picked work. Just not as well as the black chucks. I think it’s about contrast and cutting off the line of the leg.

So timely! I recently got the superga zip high tops in white (on super sale) and am really debating whether I should keep them or send them back and go with a black high top. I am so. over. wearing. boots. but still absolutely need warm socks with high temps in the forties! I was thinking the white would be a nice choice for spring, but everytime I try to wear them I feel… just off somehow? Though I do wonder if they’d work better if they got a little dirty and beat up?

Shana! You know me too well! Addidas Superstars all the way!! 😉 But I totally agree with Mike, black is sexier for sure.

I feel a little silly asking, but since you mentioned your Smart Wool in the post, I may not be too off-base. What socks do you wear with sneakers when it gets warmer? Do you just go without, or do you wear a no-show sock? Because I have yet to find any I like. I bought what I thought were higher-end socks at a sporting good store last fall, and when I wore them to the zoo with my keds, I had to stop and sit at almost every exhibit to fix my socks, which kept slipping off my heel and sliding down into my shoe. Annoying, especially when you’re really trying to keep it together with two preschoolers at the zoo.

Hmmmmm…..everybody I know is scrambling to find white leather perforated slip on Vans before the sell out, again. Maybe it is Central Coast California?? We are all wearing white leather lace up low adidas, not all stars and vans are always ‘in’.

Cracking up at the aging cheerleader comment. I always feel like the teacher that switches to sneakers before recess duty. I dig converse…and your hair.

Oy, the cool young 20-somethings and teens are wearing the big, clunky white tennis shoes here. I just shake my head and remember some of the misguided fashion choices of my youth. Anyone remember baby graphic t’s with oversized overalls and clunky black sandals? Yup, I did it. I’ll leave the clunky white shoes to those who don’t know better.

Actually the look I saw yesterday was pink and orange ombre long hair, a flowered 80’s style dress complete with the lace collar and poofy sleeves

  • CS
    March 22, 2015

Aaahhhh, for some reason I keep hitting submit comment… anywho. Poofy sleeves, 90’s style sunglasses, and big clunky white sneakers. On one hand, I admired the sense of fashion on the other, just… not so much.

I do love the chucks, vans, supergas, and some cool keds. The other ones are just… not my thing.

I like the Adidas all stars but I am 5′ 9″ with some muscle (and other) on my frame. I think they work because the size of the shoe balances the size of my body. The converse on the other hand look long and thin and like boats on my “sturdy” frame.
I also was just thinkin I LOvE where your hair has gotten to in this very post.

White sneaks are just too much like high school for me. The shoe checklist was: Doc Martens boots, Birks sandals, white sneaks. I wore them on rotation rain or shine. Ugh lol!!

i love all kicks but i just can’t get down with white ones. mostly because i know i will be stomping around in mud/grass/dirt and i hate the idea of white sneakers doing that. so weird, huh?

White sneakers are rough because I think they MUST remain clean. No dirty sneakers here! I think you look awesome in the Adidas shell tops, but I’m not sure about them for myself. I’m all about the white pumas, though (I actually recently bought myself a super light grey pair that I am wearing all. the. time.) Another excellent white sneaker must have for spring/summer…white tretorns! Ultimate classic.

I love the look of the white sneaks on you. Totally. I like the black converse too, but not necessarily more. I think they are both good – just different. Maybe it’s because I am a child of the 80s and grew up with Stan Smiths, dunno, but I think it looks great. So bummed that that Wilt tee is sold out, though! Would love some links to other similar tees – am 5 mos postpartum and it just looks like the perfect thing right now, and love the color. Great post!

I think there are a lot of trends that work if you have legs which are long/skinny for your frame and feet that are petite. I’m 5’3, curvy, and wear size 39 (8.5-9). I can only think about the very sleekest options. With shorts or bootcut pants. I’m considering white Supergas. But that’s about it. I had white shell-toe Adidas ten years ago. So puffy. Waste of money!

Love, love, love your blog! I’ve been reading since my little one was a babe (now 2). I just bought a pair of white Adidas samba sneakers, and I love them:). Perfect balance of sporty, cute and comfy!! XO

Not loving the white sneaks, minus the converse. I do, however, have a request! How about a feature on sneakers with skirts or dresses? But sneakers that aren’t converse…. I love how cons look, hate how they feel. I love the shots of you in the shift dress with sneaks awhile back, but I need more of a waist in my dresses and find it a tough look to pair with sneakers. Maybe?? 🙂

Fun post! After keeping a ridiculous, sporty, clunky white sneaker around for years for what-if, I finally threw them out about 4 minutes before they came back in. I’m officially old. I think this is a fun trend, we just have to know what we’re comfortable in! I could pull off the sporty and sometimes I do a “look,” but I feel like it’s obvious when it’s not me. Meanwhile, my hot pink chucks feel like me and hide the dirt of Toddler Life. As soon as my kids are grown I’m gettting white chucks, I don’t care what year it is!

Other great options are Nike Dunks (or Air Jordan 1s), Reebok Classics, and Adidas Campus, Asics Gel Lyte 3, etc
