Top Picks From The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2015

nordstrom-anniversary-sale-2015

You guys, THIS SALE.  If ever there’s a time to shop, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale IS IT.  But I found this year’s sale to be a little bit…tricky.  In years past, I had developed a formula:  buy expensive cashmere sweaters, Frye boots, Hanky Panky underwear and maybe one or two other little things.

This year is different.  Only slightly different, but enough that I was thrown off for a moment.  That may be in part to sizes being severely picked over (I went the SECOND DAY of the sale), but I think it also reflects the changing trends.  For example, there weren’t reams of cashmere sweaters or a sea of Frye boots.  The cashmere is there, yes, but in smaller doses and unexpected shapes.  High-end sneakers came out in force, with only a few traditional Frye boots to choose from.  I’ll be doing a whole OTHER post on the shoe/boot situation, there’s enough good stuff to warrant an in-depth article, but in general, I think this subtle shift in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is a good thing.

Come see what I found (I put together outfits including shoes and bags!!) and hopefully, you’ll agree.  This sale might just be the best way to…update?  Nah – shift our typical daily uniform into something a bit more modern.

(BTW – a giant, HUGE thank-you to Crystal at the King of Prussia Nordstrom.  She patiently worked with me for SIX HOURS, as I gathered pieces from literally every department including shoes, bags, and jewelry.  She swapped out sizes, saved my dressing room as I wandered out for more (and organized it OMG), and recommended spot-on pieces that I had missed.  And all of this was before I mentioned that I was a blogger.  I mean WOW.  Talk about amazing customer service.)

OK!  Let’s do this!

Flannel Shirt?  Glam That Baby Up

Nuthin’ like a studded and fringed bag with some silver espadrilles to really glam up a plaid shirt.  (And take note of the jeans – you’ll be seeing A LOT of them.)

blue-plaid-shirt-3

I also styled this outfit with this James Perse SWEATSHIRT jacket.  I’m wearing a size 2 (typically I take a 0 or 1) because that’s all they had left.  It’s obviously too big (you can see how boxy it is), but I think this piece could be amazing.  It’s literally a sweatshirt.

Ah…but there is some Vince and Joie to love.  And HOW I love these pieces….

TWO

Next up?  That ahhhh-mazing Vince cable-knit poncho.

vince-vneck-poncho

I’m wearing an XS, but as you can see, it’s pretty big on me (and I’m wearing wedges for extra height).   I’d need the XXS, at a minimum.  So the big question….can I pull this off with flats and skinny jeans?

There’s potential here….(and tall mamas, go nuts).  This thing is WARM, and when properly layered, might be all you need for most of the winter.

THREE

Now here’s the definition of a not-boring cardigan.  I mean WOW.  The smallest they had in-store was a medium, so I’m swimming in it.  But one can imagine….

(BTW – this is Joie’s Faux Fur Collar Cardigan)

And can it work with flats on my short self???

YES.

An Updated Chambray

I almost didn’t bother with this shirt.  Chambray is a classic, sure, but I’m feeling a little ho-hum about it these days.  So I was surprised to find that I LOVED this shirt!  The fit is spot-on (slouchy, but not too big), looks amazing with dark-wash flares, and check out THE BACK.

bag: Fringe Bucket Bag

A Chic, Sophisticated, Outfit-Making Vest

I can’t believe how amazing this Helene London vest is.  It’s well made, comfortable to wear, and makes jeans and tops look like a million bucks.  This piece would be genius for transitioning fall dresses, or making any office outfit more stylish.

I especially love it with flares and turtlenecks…..

bag: Rebecca Minkoff Mini Crossbody

Speaking of Turtlenecks…My New Fall Uniform

BAM.  This outfit is my personal fav.  What I’ll be wearing allll Fall, and probably into winter, too.

parka-dkny

These jeans are perfection, and I’ll bet they solve all kinds of ankle-boot problems.  They fit like skinny jeans, but are looser around the ankle, making them perfect to fold up over ankle boots.

And these….sneakers(!!) have chelsea boot styling, but insane, sneaker-like comfort.  I’m totally obsessed.

turtleneck: Vince Skinny Rib Turtleneck (XS)

jeans:  Rag and Bone Dre, Boyfriend Skinnies (size 24)

And one more to show that these amazing sneaker-boots work with bare legs, too:

sweater: Rag and Bone Raglan pullover, size XS (GORG color)

skirt:  1.State Pleated miniskirt XS

shoes: Vince Newlyn Hightop Sneaker (I. LOVE. THESE.)

Choosing Between The Parkas

DKNY has two amazing parkas in this sale – I was having a tough time choosing between the two.

On the left is the DKNY Two-Tone Parka; on the right is the DKNY Utility Parka.

dknyparkacollage

The utility parka (right) felt a little bit heavier, more like a winter jacket.  The left parka (the two-tone) probably won’t be warm enough for Feburary, but would be an amazing choice for slightly warmer winter temps and definitely through Fall/Spring transition weather.

In general, the utility parka is more flattering for girls with curves, the two-tone is great for apple shapes.  You can see the fundamental difference in shape when zipped:

A Fancier Twist On My New Fav Uniform

It’s still jeans and a turtleneck, but I added this gorgeous lace top from Rebecca Minkoff and an oversized scarf.  I crazy-love this top, but the cost-per-wear won’t work out for my lifestyle.  SIGH.  The scarf, however….

Stripes, Obviously

There are a bunch of really great striped tops in the sale.  Here are my three favs:

Wildfox’s Striped Sweatshirt

Wildfox’s sweatshirts are stretchy, drapey, and machine washable.  I’m starting a collection.

Vince’s Striped Tee

If this isn’t striped tee perfection, I don’t know what is.  (Also, I’m loving the proportions with the tucked-in tee, rolled jeans, and ankle boots.)

If Leopard Ballet Flats Are Your Thing

I’m lusting – hard– over these Sam Edelman ballet flats.  They’re comfortable, have the coolest scalloped edges, and while they come in a ton of colors, the leopard is spot-on.  (Get it?  haha)

Running Shoes Disguised As Oxfords

These Cole Haan oxfords feel like I’m wearing my Nike Frees – even without socks.  No. Joke. They come in a ton of colors, but the gray looks the most like an actual oxford.

Here’s how I’d wear them now….

And into Fall…

Over-The-Knee-Boots!!  HOLLA

These Dolce Vita Over-the-knee boots have a heel, but it’s a comfortable, walkable sort of heel.  However…..(sob!)….these aren’t my boots.  Why?

Yay

Boo

Boot pants:  NOT MY THING.

This dress, however istotallymything.  Amazing.

But these boots do look cute with a shorter hem…

shorts: Topshop utility shorts (size 4 – they run small)

boots: Dolce Vita Over-the-knee boots

And a Cheapie Cardigan…

One thing that hasn’t changed?  A cute-and-cheap little cardigan is lurking somewhere in the BP section of the sale.  To be annoying, I paired it with an expensive silk blouse.

Great picks and pics! In that last photo, there is a Pendleton-ish coat hanging in the background. Is that part of the sale? Looks right up my alley!

I ordered those short studded frye boots… I hope they’re as great as I’m imagining. Will you try them on? I’d love to see how you’d style them. Also I loved some of the Kendra Scott accessories, I ordered some turquoise jewelry I’m excited about. I’m enjoying these posts!

Loved your first outfit the most! Those silver espadrilles are awesome…aaaaand way outta my price range. Wop wop. I shopped the sale today and left without the Sam Edelman leopard flats….you are making me regret that move. Knew I should have waited til after I saw your take on the sale…thanks S!!

Love these pics, especially that amazing vest.

I tried on these booties and they were insanely comfortable. I don’t wear heels anymore, and I felt so fine in these. And with black skinny jeans, your legs go on for days, check them out!

Also, I brought home the Paul green grey bootie. Cute. And the Vince deep red scuba jacket … Pricey but a piece that probably won’t be on sale ever again.

    Hi Shana,
Lurker here. great post. I love your hair, by the way. Can’t really picture you with long hair anymore, as the shorter length looks so good on you.
Wondering how you care for your clothing. I am trying to only buy things that I can handwash and a lot of the items I love say to dry clean (like the Diane Von Furstenberg dress). Tips are appreciated! I feel like I already own too many dry clean items and don’t want to add more.
Also, I think I may have to get those Dre jeans. Have been looking for a skinny jean with at least 9 inch rise. I was actually looking more for a raw denim…wondering how much these stretch or “bag”.
    Thanks!

Awesome post! I had already shopped your anniversary sale shop but now I am super excited to receive some items I purchased because they look so darn good on you
I agree with the previous poster in regards to your hair. I have a hard time picturing you with anything but this cool rocker chic/ French voguette you have -even though I started reading you years and years ago.

Great post! Looking at the DKNY coats, as a curvy girl, I immediately gravitated towards the two-tone one as more flattering, being darker on the bottom, or am I wrong? It looks like it would be perfect for my typically mild west coast Canadian winter.

Well…80% of what you just featured is sitting in my wishlist and will be mewling pathetically until July 17th when the sale is finally open to the icky proletariats. The faux fur cardigan is in there too and I know you understand the gravity of this; I have officially done a 180 on the matter. Thanks, Shana, I’ve been waiting for your picks from this sale. xoxo!

Thanks for the great post! I was wondering how heavy the purses and the backpack are. I’m gravitating toward lighter weight bags lately and I’m worried what leather plus fringe plus studs feels like before keys, wallet, phone, hand wipes, assorted toys/granola bars, etc. Any thoughts are appreciated, because I do love me some fringe!

I found the Marc Jacobs backpack too heavy, but the Rebecca Minkoff one is AMAZING. I’ve been carrying mine daily. Not too heavy at all.

    July 14, 2015

so would you advise sizing up in the joes flared jean??

    • Shana
      July 14, 2015

Gosh, this is such a tricky question nowadays, since sizing is so variable by brand and style. So. I typically take a 24 in Joe’s…but in this particular style, the 24 is too tight, so I’d go up to a 25 in the Joe’s Flare Icon jeans.

But here’s the deal: for most other brands, I’m a pretty solid 25. It’s only a few brands (Joe’s being one of them) where I typically need to go down to a ridiculous 24.

GAH. Does this help? Or am I confusing you, LOL?

I just stumbled onto this post and am such a new fan! I agree with the previous commenter that said the clothes look better on you than the models – true every time! You have a gift for styling and I ordered too many of the pieces you selected as well as a couple from your beach trip post.
