Don’t get me wrong: I have nothing against Linvilla Orchards. We go and play, ride the hayrides, eat cider doughnuts, and just deal with the traffic/lines/masses of people that mean October at Linvilla. But I’ve been looking for an alternative – something chill, organic, and easy. For those weekends when apple picking means just that: spending an hour or so picking apples off trees.
I think I’ve found it.
We visited last weekend – Indian Orchards is close to Philly, a manageable size, uses organic methods, and is run by the nicest people (5th generation!). They even had raspberries, which was a totally unexpected treat.
In addition to raspberries, they have pick your own apples and pears, and their little farm stand is filled with all sorts of fun squashes and beautiful pumpkins (not sure if there’s pick-your-own pumpkin or not).
It’s a quick trip out there, and an easy hour or so picking – we picked both raspberries and apples in under an hour. The whole place feels really uncommercialized and authentic (although I missed the doughnuts – next time we’ll bring our own doughnuts and coffee, haha). But the best part is that we got home in plenty of time to do this:
(BTW – I used this gluten-free, vegan apple crisp recipe. I doubled the topping amount and used buckwheat flour as the gluten-free flour blend. I also didn’t add sugar to the apples themselves – they were plenty sweet.)
Indian Orchards doesn’t have a website (IKNOW!), and I’m pretty sure their facebook page is run by their 10 year old daughter. 🙂 If you have questions, the best thing to do is TEXT (not call) their main number: 610-888-6969
Indian Orchards is open for picking 10-5 M-Sat (I think they’re closed Tuesdays) and on Sunday, from 11-4. The address is 27 Copes Lane, in Media, PA.
If you’re interested, here’s what we’re wearing:
Boots – really old Freebird by Steven Kano boots. Amazon has one pair left (in blue, size 9), but that’s it. However, the entire line is AMAZING. Amazon has the widest selection, but Shopbop’s selection is really well edited, and 6pm has a bunch on sale. Actually….hang on….OK: I just created a Fall Boots shop that has all of my favorite Freebirds in it (among others I’ve been meaning to share).
