Blazers, ya’ll. I love a blazer – have always had at least one in my closet for as long as I can remember.
Many of you probably have one as well…or at least think you may want one, because it’s just one of those things – a pretty, classic basic. It’s tricky though. I mean, right? A blazer is a very tailored look, which can make it interesting tying it into your rotation of easy, everyday outfits. It’s simple to pair with work attire or with the occasional date night look, because blazers are so good at adding structure and class to a dressy outfit. But the casual route…???
Well, ma friends…maaaaa friends. My absolute favorite way to wear a blazer is CASUALLY. I actually feel more comfortable in a blazer when it’s dressed down. Considering the fact that I don’t have an office to go to (unless you count my desk in the playroom, covered in sticky peanut butter finger prints, dried up play dough and a million drawings by Mads that I can’t seem to just let go of) and I very rarely get out on a date these days (ya know, newborn and all)…my blazer has to be worn in a more casual way. I love it too much to wait for a dressy occasion (in 10 years – ha. Just kidding. Sort of).
So! I put together some outfits, that I then tested on myself, to prove how very possible it is to wear a blazer with day-to-day, mom on-the-go outfits.
Let’s not take a blazer too seriously.
Outfit 1: Blazer + Sneakers
…because sneakers. No brainer there, yeh? If casual is what you want, wearing a pair of laid back sneakers will usually do the trick. (stealing a men’s watch from a certain guy helps, too. *cough* Thanks, husband)
Oh, look. There’s Mads in the background contemplating a little midday, muddy swim (and mom not paying attention).
blazer: Banana Republic Lightweight blazer – limited availability, but they have several other blazer options, like their two-button lightweight blazer and this rad long lapel blazer. I would actually love to see the lapel style with jeans and cut-offs.
top: Who What Wear striped Linen Tee – great top to have. In fact, the Who What Wear collection at Target has been on of my favorites. Have you seen any of it??
jeans: Gap Girlfriend Jeans – tested, approved…and not just by me! I have had several readers tell me how much they love them. They have a higher waist, fit a little loose…and yeh. They’re great. Now that I am about 10 weeks postpartum they are an even better fit on me.
shoes: Superga Zipper High tops – awesome shoe. Sole Society also has a new hi top style from Superga and it’s pretty rad. I’ve mentioned it before, but this is THE hi top for tall girls with big feet (me), because it doesn’t make your feet look huge…which is always nice.
watch: borrowed from my husband – have you seen Fossil’s Boyfriend Watches? They have that masculine look with a feminine touch to them. They have it in 21 colors, too. 21 colors, people.
Outfit 2: Blazer + Cut-offs
This is one of my favorite ways to wear a blazer. Maybe it’s the mix of something rough with something more tailored that gets me. Whatever it is, it’s a simple way to make a blazer look more casual. Also, Converse…easy. Shorts aren’t a must either – boyfriend jeans? girl friend jeans? Yep. Go CRAZY with that blazer. haha.
sweater: H&M Fine Knit Sweater – love this sweater…and don’t hate the price either. H&M is a fun place to find basics that you really only need in between seasons or for a specific period of time (pregnancy or postpartum). This little sweater has seen me through a couple of postpartum months. Madewell has this sweet lightweight pullover sweater as well (in a few different colors).
shorts: Articles of Society Distressed Denim Shorts -I broke down and ordered a pair of shorts that actually fit me…after trying on my shorts from two Summers ago (and having a small postpartum breakdown in my closet). I found this awesome pair and they feel good, because…umm…they fit. These are the shorts of Summer, yo. By the way, I did order them in one size up to fit my postpartum bod. I am hoping that they will still fit throughout the Summer – maybe just a little bit more baggy. I can work that.
shoes: Converse Shoreline – these have made me love Converse even more. They make the best run-around cool mom shoes. I live in these.
Outfit 3: Blazer + Maxi
When I find a maxi skirt or dress that I really like, I wear it until it has holes in it. Well, it happened. I found the comfortable maxi skirt of my dreams…and it’s the perfect compliment to my blazer.
There is that occasional crazy night out, so I went ahead and dressed it up a bit for date night with a simple shoe swap…
Oh, yehhhh. I bring that steamy steam to date night. You know it. haa. I meant to add some layered silver necklaces, but forgot. A child must have been yelling for me or something.
tee: Naps graphic tee – greatest tee ever haha…because naps. Sadly, I can’t find it for ya anymore. However this Slow Jams tee is a winner.
skirt: LOFT Shirred Maxi Skirt (available in Petite & Tall) – yep, I love this skirt. So far I’ve worn it during the week to run around, to church and a little date. If you’re tall, I don’t think you necessarily need a tall. I bought it in a tall and wear it higher on my waist, so that it’s more a high waist deal, but the regular size would be perfect with flats (if worn lower on the waist).
shoes: (top casual pair) Target Maria Slide Sandals – a similar style is these Nine West Weslia Tassel Sandals . Also, $40. Nothing to hate about that. I am all about these Marc Fisher Tassel Sandals, as well.*swoon* The ankle strap just does me in. // (bottom dressy pair) Steven Viienna Sandal – an absolute favorite of mine, with it’s low heel. They always make me feel sexy.
Outfit 4: Blazer + Slouchy Pants
A very casual look, put together a bit more by the blazer. My postpartum waist and hips are on very good terms with forgiving pants that have a stretchy waist. So comfortable and I love wearing it with the denim button up. I’ve never worn it with the blazer before, but am glad I tried it. It gives it all more finished look.
…then dressed up, because I can never get enough wear out of these shoes and wanted to pretend I do…
Yeh. I die over them still (and I bought them a few years ago). They’re totally worth the shelf space…even if they only hit the pavement once a year.
pants: Hatch Collection Daphne Pant – great pant for maternity and postpartum – comfy and lightweight. However, if you’re considering Hatch pieces, I would definitely be prepared to play around with the sizes. Try them on and be ready to exchange for a different size. I could have gone up one more size from my norm. I don’t think that’s the case for their tops though…or even their other bottoms, so…(post coming on this particular topic?…maaaaaaaybe). I do really like the pieces I have from Hatch though. I think it’s just all about getting into the right size with them.
shoes: (booties) Jeffrey Campbell Cromwell bootie – amazing western-style boot that brings the cool factor. They fit normally and do stay on your heel. // (metallic pumps) Zara – old. Sorry sorry! I know, I’m a terrible human being. UO has something similar and fun. Also to consider, are the J. Crew Mirror Metallic Kitten heel. In fact, I think those would look fantastic with a slouchy pant. (currently 25% off)
lip color: Revlon Just Bitten – great lip colors…I have a few.
necklace: Baublebar – old, but this Lotus Necklace is amazing. It looks like it could dress up anything.
Outfit 5: Blazer + Denim Skirt
This outfit is a bit more funky – a little boho on bottom, business professional on top…and ya know? I like. I thought it was too much of a mix, but it works together.
top: Who What Wear Button Up Blouse – great top for throwing on. I bought it because I was getting bored of wearing just tees every day. It ups my style game. Also, with it’s button-up front…it’s good for all of you nursing mamas.
skirt: Who What Wear Denim Skirt – if you’re looking for a denim pencil skirt, this is one you should try
sandals: Sam Edelman Gladiator Sandal – the particular pair I have seem to be sold out, but their new Demi Sandal is soooo good. It’s basically what I have…maybe just a bit more feminine?…which is not a bad thing at all.
Style Cheat Sheet
…because getting dressed is hard sometimes.
Pin it, print it…whatevz. You do YOU.
Yeh, I know. I am one of the finalists in Redbook Magazine’s Real Women Style competition. I could be ON THE COVER! What?! Ladies, my mouth literally dropped open when I found out the other night. It was such a great surprise (after a blah day), so…it’s incredible and I couldn’t be more excited. On that note, let me go ahead and shamelessly beg you for votes. Can I haz your votes, please? Pleeeeeeeeeease? You can vote here. Every day. Every hour…which is a bit much, but I’ll take whatever you throw at me.
There. Begging over…for now.
*also, a big thanks to my dear friend and neighbor for the pictures. Apparently she’s a photographer and didn’t know it. 😉
