Two Ways To Style Taupe Booties (Now And Into Fall)

taupe-booties-19

We just got back to Philly from an amazing vacation.  We did a house exchange in France, then flew to Barcelona to meet up with my big brother and his fam.  Much more about our trip soon, but at the moment, we need to talk about these boots.

I bought these unassuming little beige (taupe?) booties during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (they’re the Lucky Brand Bashina boots), almost on a whim.  I didn’t realize that these boots would quickly become the cornerstone of my travel capsule wardrobe.  I wore these boots all over France (and a little bit in Spain, too).  The reason this style of bootie – chunky heel, lighter color, cutout detail – is so good is because it’s so darn versatile.  Flippy little summer dress?  Wear the boots.  Denim cutoffs?  Yes, boots.  And then, when temps drop, pair the boots with skinnies and jackets and – this is important – your outfit comes together effortlessly because the taupey-beige is one of those colors that manages to go with everything while matching nothing.

To keep my outfits somewhat cohesive (I swear, that’s how I should start describing my personal style, ‘somewhat cohesive’), I found that a lighter bag helps to pull it all together, even when I was wearing black.  (Actually….especially if I was wearing black).

Two things of note:

1.  I’ve mentioned these boots before, and they keep selling out.  Never fear, I rounded up several other solid options (and a few I even like better).

2.  I’ve gotten a few questions about cut-out boots with socks.  I’m not convinced that it’s not possible….but it’ll be tricky.  I’ll play around once the temps drop, but at the moment, I plan to treat mine like sneakers:  bare ankles.  So we’ll see.  (I’ve also included a few pairs in the roundup below that will easily pair with socks…)

Keep reading to see how I wore these booties all over France for a little Wear Now / Wear Later styling game…..

Wear Now – Taupe Ankle Boots And Dresses

These pics were shot in Nantes, France, where we did our house exchange.  We loved wandering around the downtown, and would stop at La Cigale for champage (me), and hot chocolate (the kids).  Why hot chocolate?  La Cigale is situated right in front of the most amazing fountain – my little guys spent hours running through, then would come back to our outdoor table and warm up with the thickest, richest hot cocoa.  Bliss.

dress: Tularosa Holden Dress (size S for reference – the XS fit too small around my chest)

bag:  Rebecca Minkoff Medium Julian Backpack (my exact color is sold out, but I rounded up a few more light colored bags below….)

shoes:  Lucky Bashina Boots

Wear Later – With Skinny Jeans And Comfy Blazers

These pics were taken in Normandy, where the nights were pretty chilly.  And you’ll see this outfit again (and again and again) – it was almost the only thing I wore for our entire France trip.

top:  Rebecca Taylor (size 2 for reference) – I do realize how insanely expensive this entire outfit is…..in my defense, everything was bought at major discount during the Anni sale.  Here are a few pretty top alternatives for under $200:

jacket: James Perse Double Breasted Blazer (size 0) – make no mistake, this is a sweatshirt and a jacket.  Insanely comfortable, yet the lines are so freaking good.  I’m obsessed.  Do we want a round-up of sweatshirt (or ponte or knit) blazers?  Let me know.

jeans:  AG Legging Ankle Jean – Size 25 for reference (and I hacked the bottoms myself)

bag:  Rebecca Minkoff Medium Julian Backpack (my exact color is sold out, but I rounded up a few more light colored bags below….)

shoes:  Lucky Bashina Boots

Shop Taupe Booties

Shop Light Bags

I realize that a few of these bag picks might strike some as an unusual choice.  My criteria was thus:  the bags had to feel light enough for hot summertime temps, yet have enough…ooompf to be paired with black and denim this fall.  Picture these bags with your fav skinnies, black blazer, tshirt, and a delicious oxblood scarf (plain or plaid or even this bright one).

xo,

S

A huge thank you to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post!! I always love a serendipitous find, and these boots were certainly that.  (Please restock, would ya?  Especially Size 8 – readers are now stalking eBay, haha.)  As always, all product choices, thoughts, and opinions are my own.  And readers, thank you for your continued support.  There are so many blogs out there, and we are so very grateful that you choose to read this one.

    Hi,

Just curious what color of the bashina booties you own. Thanks!

Those look like the sesame. I got the brindle and the sesame (and returned the sesame). The brindle have a darker sole/heel.

I bought the Lucky boots as well on Anni Sale before I saw your posts and thought the same thing. “They will go with everything.” They’re actually the only thing I bought at the sale. I’m 4 months pregnant with baby two and couldn’t justify buying clothes. I’ve only worn them once with it still being a hundred degrees in Phoenix but when I did wear them with tiny Vans no-show socks they slipped off and crumpled to the front of the boot. My long winded question is, socks or no socks?

I really enjoy your work and secretly want Nordstrom to contact me to review things also. They’re my favorite retailer. Please know that there are a ton of women who look at you to help them style their finds as you do it so effortlessly with those boys on your arm. You go, mama!!!

I think Shana said somewhere in her post that she wears the Lucky boots without socks. But I have lots of experience with no-show socks and you have to try a LOT of different brands to find ones that fit your feet. I like Keds sneaker socks the best right now, although they’re only no-show enough for booties, not for flats.

Yes please do a post on comfy Blazers 🙂 I missed the pearse one on sale

I, too, would love a post on sweatshirt blazers (well made + affordable, if at all possible). I managed to find the James Pearse one at my local Nordies during the sale and LOVED it, but still couldn’t justify the price.

Are they the brindle color or sesame???

    • Kristen
      August 21, 2016

The picture she shows in the link is the Brindle, but I think the ones she’s wearing are the Sesame. The Brindle have a darker sole and heel and give the boot a tad more casual look, I think. The Sesame have a sole and heel that matches the boot. Why do I know so much about this boot? Because I hemmed and hawed and hemmed again about which to keep. I kept the Sesame and I LOVE them.

I love everything you’re wearing and am mad at myself for not getting all those items during anni sale. I don’t live near a store so I was ordering and sending a lot back since my size has slightly changed. I hope Nordstrom ends up putting it all back on sale!

  • Annie
    August 21, 2016

I ordered these in Brindle, I think Shana has the Sesame as the Brindle seems to lean grey, but they slip off my heals, but I think a size smaller would be too small. Does anyone else own these or have this problem?

    • Annie
      August 21, 2016

    • Jessica
      August 21, 2016

Yes! I bought them in sesame and love the look, but my heel keeps coming out on the left one. Debating returning them but still hoping I can find a way to make them tighter. I’ll never find them in a half size smaller, otherwise I would try that first.

      • Meaghan
        August 23, 2016

I bought them and while they don’t slip off my foot they rub the bejeebis out of my inner foot at the seam where the front and back meet. Ouch!!!!

    August 21, 2016

I stalked the booties all during the Anniversary sale and somehow managed to nab all the colors. Only kept the sesame ones and love them! They really do go with everything and are nice and comfy. Like most booties the heel slip gets better once broken in so I would say to stick with your true size. Ebayed the black ones in size 8 quite promptly! Ha!

  • Lauren
    August 21, 2016

I stalked these booties during the sale and did eventually get them, but ultimately returned them (now I wish I had kept them – the elusive 8!! – and resold on ebay, ha!). I had a hard time getting my foot in the shoe, even though once it was on I had a lot of room. Also, I didn’t love them from the front with bare legs even though I loved them from the side. I still feel a little sad seeing them though, they are so pretty… 🙂

  • Lydie
    August 21, 2016

YES! We want a roundup of sweatshirt/Blazers! Especially for those of us with long arms and long torsos!!

    • Phoebe
      August 21, 2016

      Yes, long arms!

  • Keilexandra
    August 21, 2016

Nthing all of the requests for a sweatshirt blazer roundup. I ordered the JP blazer during NAS but couldn’t justify the price because I have a long torso and only liked wearing it open. But please emphasize sweatshirt blazers over the standard ponte/knit blazers in a boring blazer shape and flimsy fabric that I always see.

By the way, I have a question… how do you wear a white dry-clean-only top on vacation, girl?! Did you take it to the cleaners in France? I have to be able to wear all of my vacation clothes multiple times, and for a long international trip I’d be planning on laundry.

    August 21, 2016

I have the Jeffrey Campbell’s. Bought them MONTHS ago and haven’t worn them yet – it’s HOT in NC! But so looking forward to them in the “fall” here. The toe is pointier, but as far as I can tell – comfortable. Definitely a “no sock” situation.

    August 21, 2016

Thanks for this one! Just went to do some back to school (teacher) shopping for myself, and a lot of the stuff I tried on was just meh. But I brought a pair of taupe booties into the dressing room with me because of this post and they made everything woohoo! instead. Didn’t love the actual boots they had there (Old Navy) but I came home and ordered the Jessica Simpson Dacia in Totally Taupe. Love how the front is lower– I think it will elongate my legs.

Love those ankle boots!! I have some black ankle boots that i spent almost my entire college years in. But i am in need of some new ones. I especially love that the heel is not that high and the color is perfect for fall. Fantastic post!!

Oh Shana! Welcome home!! It was such fun to live vicariously through you and your fam during this stunning holiday. Seriously. I had a great time! Did you?!

Next up, I just wanted to share what I did with my favorite little booties to “freshen” them up so to speak. They’re not the nude, taupe color like yours but rather a dark tobacco color. Anyway, they were my very favorite travel bootie for the exact same reason these ones up above are for you. But, mine had seen better days. Wanna know what I did with them? I got out a paint brush and white paint, and I splattered them! Presto!! New, cool, booties. Do check them out. I swear adding a little splattered paint to anything totally revitalizes it. Here’s the linky: http://www.krembdelakremb.com/diy-painting-scuffed-shoes/

I’m looking forward to seeing more pics of your trip!

I purchased the Bashina boots in the brindle cause I liked the darker heel. Very happy with them! The interior is beautifully finished and comfortably soft. Based on reviews I ordered up a half size and they go on and off with ease and don’t slide around on my feet. I will wear these endlessly. Love anything I can easily slide my foot into! Like slippers…..
