Skincare So Good You Can Gift It: Colleen Rothschild

We’ve been long-time fans of Colleen Rothschild over here.  I wrote up her life-changing, oil-based face cleanser in a gift guide two years ago, and haven’t stopped using it since.  Scotti and I recently had the pleasure of meeting Colleen and her husband at a blogging conference, and we were thrilled to find that they were both nice and down-to-earth.  Furthermore, all Colleen Rothschild products are formulated without Parabens, SLS/SLES Sulfates, Phthalates, Triclosan, Formaldehyde, PABA, Toluene, or Benzene – something this cancer survivor seriously appreciates.

So when the brand reached out and asked if we’d like to test out a few products…um, YES.  Yes, yes, yes.  Since I was planning a girls trip with A, one of my besties, back to my hometown of Marquette, MI, I asked Colleen to send us a few goodies to play with.  I rounded up my mom, my sister (including baby G), champagne and loads of chocolate from Donkers (no visit to Mqt is complete without visiting Donkers), and we spent a very girly day testing out products.

Keep reading to see some of the fun we had, our thoughts on the products, as well as a promo code (20% off!!) just for Mom Edit readers….

Top Pick:  Radiant Cleansing Balm

The Radiant Cleansing Balm is a total game-changer.  It’s an oil-based cleanser that you scoop out, warm between your fingers, and apply to your face.  Then – and this is the best part – you simply towel it off with a damp muslin cloth (included with your purchase).  There’s no need to splash water on your face!  This cleanser leaves your skin clean, refreshed, and perfectly balanced (not oily or dry).   As I mentioned before, I’ve been using this one for years, and will never switch.  It’s that good – even removes all traces of eye makeup!

And Scotti, who has notoriously NEVER washed her face at night (she seriously slept in a face full of makeup for years) has started using this product.  The difference?  Scotti describes her new nightly ritual as “an experience, not a chore.”

Extreme Recovery Cream

We also love the Extreme Recovery Cream.  It’s a super-thick moisturizer that feels cool and soothing on the skin – not oily.  It was created to be used over of any sort of treatment serum – it’ll keep your skin moisturized, without irritating sensitive skin.   I’ve found that this face cream is perfect after microdermabrasion treatments, over retinol, when sunburned, or windburned (which Raines is constantly battling during ski season).  If  only I had known about this product during chemo….

Face Oil No.9

This No. 9 face oil is like a miracle catch-all.  I use it on my face when I’m in need of a little extra moisture, on my lips, cuticles, everything.  It was especially helpful a week or so ago when I had a bad cold – my poor red nose loved this stuff.   It has a beautiful, subtle smell, and never feels greasy.  I’ll even pat it over make-up in the dead of winter when I realize my poor face is all dried out.

Sheer Renewal Cream

This one, the Sheer Renewal Cream, is Scotti’s other favorite (besides, of course, the Radiant Cleansing Balm).  It’s a lightweight moisturizer that doubles as a make-up primer.  It leaves a ‘powder-light finish’ that one reviewer claims is perfect for steamy Florida weather.

A Few Skin Perfectors…

The last two products we played around with were both new to me:  the Dual Enzyme Polish and the Clarifying Detox Mask.  I would categorize both products as masks, actually.  The first time I used the Dual Enzyme Polish, I gently scrubbed it on my face and attempted to wash it off.  It took several tries to get my face clean, and I was a little underwhelmed with the results.  Then I read the directions:  you actually apply this one as a mask, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.  Once the time is up, you scrub in little circles and then you rinse.

Ah.  Suuuuuper soft and glowy skin.  Now I know what all the fuss was about.

I’m dying to try some of the anti-aging products next.  Specifically the retinol treatment, and the Vitamin C treatment.  Have any of you tried them before?

  1. I would love to know more about a good skin care regime. I am older than you ladies at TME, and am considering all my options to keep my glow going! You mentioned microdermabrasion, which I have considered, but also feel terrified by the thought of it. So open to your ideas, insights and suggestions. Going to start with these items as I LOVE that they are free of the chemicals so many other products contain.

    • Try getting regular exercise daily, drink more water, lay off on alcohol, caffeine, and meat, and you will glow from the inside! Save your money for workout clothes and running shoes. Seriously, there is no need to pay so much for skincare when paying attention to better health will yield better results and a happier life!

  2. I find it so peculiar how women, unfortunately y’all included, are obsessed with finding “natural, non-toxic” beauty products, but pay no mind to drinking alcohol, which is an enormous toxic load absorbed straight into the body. #science #getyourprioritiesstraight

    • Mari (one of several) on

One or two glasses of wine every few days is NOT “an enormous toxic load”; please don’t exagerate.
The body can tolerate it; its a problem for people who abuse alcohol, who should fully abstain, but that is very different than indulging in wine once in a while.
Also, for all it is maligned, caffeine in small amounts is actually good for the brain-there is solid data to show it nearly halves the risk of Parkinsons disease and may also be helpful against other dementias.
      Cheers!

      • These products are banned in Europe and are listed as toxic on the EWG website. Just because the US doesn’t have as harsh regulations as other countries does NOT mean they are safe. And a lot of women care about what they put on their bodies just as much as what they put in their bodies!

  3. I’m a 7 year hormone receptor positive breast cancer survivor. Alcohol is a proven risk ( for recurrence as well), I never drank much but now only 2-3drinks a year. It’s a choice though, moderate consumption can lower your risk for heart disease- you have to weigh each case individually.

    • To clarify…it was my own personal decision to quit alcohol based on my circumstances- a very high onco-dx score & advanced stage- each of us is different, I was replying to a deleted comment, not trying to wag my finger at anyone. Alcohol does raise estrogen levels, this is why I choose to avoid it, it is not the cause of cancer.

  4. Here’s the thing: Anyone who leaves comments implying that I have, in some way, given myself breast cancer due to drinking alcohol will have their comments deleted. I don’t care if you claim to be a physician or the Queen of England. I have a rock-solid medical team (thanks), that I check in with multiple times per year. And frankly, if the link between breast cancer and alcohol was indeed that direct, we would probably have cured the disease by now. It comes down to a real understanding of what probability actually means.

  5. The products look fantastic. Would love to try them once they are back in stock. Unfortunately, everything seems to be sold out now :((
