Last week we had winter coat + boot combos from coast to coast, now it’s New England’s turn! Even though the weather is more November than late January here lately, I promise this wool Madewell City Grid coat and tall Sorel Joan of Arctic boots stands up well to blizzard conditions.
I mistakenly thought it would be cool to have my ‘spousetographer’ snap some blog pics in a snowstorm a few weeks ago – as it turns out, I stayed surprisingly warm and toasty no matter how frosty the atmosphere (literally and otherwise). For the sake of marital harmony, I got in touch with a self-professed local ‘momtographer’ this week when it was in the 40s and was still really comfortable. The boots were maybe overkill, but handled the chilly muck beautifully so they’ll be on repeat from October – April around here.
Soooo, only like 5 more months of winter!
Good news though – I found lots of similarly styled coats and Joan of Arctics that are on super sale right now so you still have time to enjoy them this winter.
This cocoon style jacket from Madewell with a little moto mixed in is amazing for lots of body types – triangle, apple, athletic, carrot, whatever – because it’s cut wider at the shoulders and bust, then tapers in a bit at the bottom for shape. Loving the little details that make it feel special – the leather trim, asymmetrical zipper, wrist zips and the second strap at the neck that you can snap over if it’s really cold. The pockets are really good too, deep enough to hold my bulky smartphone wallet/key bundle.
Ah, these aptly named ‘Joan of Arctic’ boots. They took a while to find – I had a long list of must-haves: truly waterproof, warm enough to stand around in snow for a few hours, not too bulky and maybe a little stylish. These are so incredibly warm – word of warning, I wore them to the mall and Target and was sweating bullets within a few minutes. Maybe if your office is really really cold, they might be good for inside wear, but the removable wool lining acts like a virtual spaceheater for your lower legs & feet and you’ll overheat quickly. I wore a pair of medium-thick Smartwool socks with them last weekend to a Christmas tree bonfire and didn’t get cold toes, even after a few hours outside in subzero windchill standing in a frozen field. If “real” winter ever does come to Boston, my feet are prepared.
Jacket: Madewell City Grid Coat – Awesome sale going on right now, available in 2 colors, also (sherpa version on sale @Nordstrom!) I love this oversized biker/cocoon style for my body type – I’d recommend pairing it with skinny pants since it is meant to be a bit boxy in a good way. This one’s going fast, but I found a bunch of really similar style coats below, in a variety of warmth levels and plus size options, too.
Boots: Sorel Joan of Arctic Waterproof Boots – These are also on a really good sale @Nordstrom, and going fast, sizes keep popping back in so keep trying! They come in half-sizes and run true to size – I sized up half a size and still have room with thick socks. (Sorel is also having a sale, these Joan of Arctics are so good and this really well-priced glam version with fur is calling my name. #navyisthenewblack)
Leggings: J. Crew Signature Leggings – Classics for a reason, these are a great length and the fit is spot on.
