New Fav Outfit Combo: Sporty Sweater Dresses + Parkas

Hey gang!  Maybe you guys can help me out:  My husband is taking me to Brooklyn for my birthday next weekend (we’ll be seeing Then She Fell), and I’m trying to pack. Ugh.  Packing’s the worst.

I may take one of the outfit combos I’ve been swooning over lately: a parka + sweater dress.  It’s both practical and cute.

Unsurprisingly, the sweater dresses I’ve fallen in love with all have stripes.  The vibe is more sporty than French Girl, but either type looks cool with OTK boots and a cozy parka.  (And they all look good over jeans if we get hit with a cold snap.  Really.)

The problem?  I have three of these dressesand can’t decide.  Wanna weigh in?

The Brightly Striped Set

Ok – so there’s no doubt that this dress is gorgeous, but all that color.  Is it me?  (Also, this dress is a set….and the skirt looks really cute with a….drumroll please….black turtleneck.  My usual trick, haha.)

parka: S13 Canyon Parka 50% off!  (xs for reference….I am so flipping happy with this one, and many of you are too.  I’m still getting emails from readers raving about this parka.)

boots: Stuart Weitzman Lowlands (also on Amazon) – if you are looking for a more affordable option, Gwen has been LOVING this pair.  They still feel like quality boots without the giant price tag.

The Swingy Dress One Can Eat In

This one is the least fitted, and I like the idea of eat vast quantities of food without fear. #vacation

The One Where I Dither Over The Color Options

Sooooo…I love this dress.  I especially love it in black, which was. not. available. when I first purchased it two weeks ago.  However, it is now, and on sale.

What’s a girl to do?

So….which combo should I bring with me to Brooklyn???  And if your pick is the last one…which COLOR??  (navy OR black??)  Help!

I also wouldn’t say no to any advice on what to wear to Then She Fell.  An Alice-in-Wonderland style dress?  Or do I….idon’tknow…need to scramble around on my knees for any reason?  Which would imply jeans and sneaks??

  1. hmmm…only keeping one? huh…well I agree the first is too much color for you..middle one eh…but the last dress…I think in the black…since thats your comfort color…

  2. oh! also…if you got that Maje..pj/ top/ jacket…can you style it please?…just ordered it and its marked down even more!..

  3. I adore the top one so much! Especially with the parka on, but I do understand it’s a lot of color. And you know me…queen of gray. But somehow I just love it so much. Second choice would be the last dress in the black.

  4. I do like them all. Contrary to most comments, I like the last one the least…would like more in the black, though. I think the middle one looks best with the parka and the colored set is very Brooklyn…plus it could be 2 outfits with the tneck option! I seriously heart sweater dresses. Thanks for the options!

    • Top one! It’s so fun and you look so cute! Agreed that skirt would look great with a black turtleneck and I’m thinking the top would be fun with a just below the knee black knit pencil skirt or maybe distressed denim shorts in the spring?

  5. I vote for the first one. Love that you can wear as separates too. That way you can pack less. The parka also works perfectly with the bright colors! It provides a neutral background in a way.

  6. Christy Hartman on

Frankly, I don’t remember anything but the colored one. It wowed me. In honor of growth, I say go out of your comfort zone.

  7. Last dress in black and I am firmly a navy girl, but those stripes and black are amazing!
Not that you need an out of the way Brooklyn pizza suggestion but I’m gonna give it anyhow: DiFara’s in Midwood (right around the corner from my first NYC apt) is the best pizza anywhere ever always. My husband drove out of his way to get some last time he was passing through to Jersey from Georgia (!!) it is that good. If you want to make it a longer, more substantial visit to a secret haunt, you can stop by Cafe K for chocolate cake which is super good. I would go there for coffee and cake when I locked myself out of the aforementioned apartment.

    • I grew up a few blocks from DiFara’s and ate their pizza all the time. It was my best friend’s favorite pizza place although I loved another pizza place a block away (now closed). I like their square pizza. Go try DiFara’s! You look great in all of the dresses, I love these stripes. Get the black one (though no more stock in XS at Macy’s or I’d order it too).

  8. I don’t ever comment. Big Deal. Listen up. First one: No it’s not “you” but neither is going to Brooklyn with Mike for your 41st birthday. That’s ALL NEW. If you are going, go big. Go huge. Are we going with a freaking sweater dress? Ok fine: GO! Go first one and go all CRAZY!!!! The last one looks like we weren’t sure if we were skiing or going to HSA. In fact I wore that one skiing when the Challenger blew up. That’s bad luck, for sure. And I don’t personally do middle ground. This much we know. Out. Love. A. (Am I fired from ever posting again? That works. Just wear all the colors/stripes first.). You are perfect. However you are. Whatever you wear. I don’t care. Just come home eventually. Xo A

    • And now that I just played a quick game of Tuesday night catch-up on all news, blogs, posts, and comments, I have this to say: Definitely go with the first one. Because it’s LOUD. And right now, there are things that need to be HEARD. And they aren’t BLACK AND WHITE. They just AREN’T. And they also, don’t have a giant PINK STRIPE running through them, even though we feel that so deeply in our hearts. Wear the crazy ALL COLORS to represent the woman I know you to be: the one that listens first, respects always, feels everything, and gives endlessly. You can’t do that in one color. Nor two. Nor three. You need many. We all need MANY. I love you. A

  9. I think the most colorful one is really fun. In comparison, I think the second is a little too big and the third just wasn’t that exciting. You could dress down the first dress or dress it up for a holiday party – it works on you!

  10. Yes!! I agree, after the first striped dress combo there was nothing else to see. I was wowed. And yes, you wore it better than the model- I probably wouldve scrolled right past it but alas now its in my cart and forever embedded on my mind as a MUST HAVE. I LOVE that you can style it separately for more versatility!!

  11. First one for sure. Also, forget every else’s pizza recommendations. My husband and I own Williamsburg Pizza and it’s the best of the of best. Say hi if you stop in 🙂

  12. A. I had no idea that Macy’s carries free people. Thanks for letting me know!!
    B. First or last dress for sure! I like the last one in navy, hands down. Great look for winter- I love it!

  13. I don’t think you can make a bad decision, they’re all freaking adorable! I do have a question about the parka though… It looks much more slate colored on the website and more army green here. How does it look in person? Thanks!

  14. For Then She Fell – comfy flat shoes with decent traction as you’ll be going up and down some narrow stairs. It’s such a great show! Have fun!

    • Oh, and if memory serves we left coats and large bags in the first room in cubbies. If you are worried about your personals maybe bring a tiny cross body bag.

  15. The first one for sure! It’s the most interesting. And because it’s two pieces, you can wear them separately as well.

  16. Sheila dolinger on

First one all the way ! Most lively and sexy to boot. You should watch “Iris” – life story of Iris Apfel and you’ll be inspired to inject some color and a sense of humor in your style 😀😀😀

  17. Seriously love all the dresses and your coat is fabulous! I simply ❤❤ the pictures with you and the adorable mail man. You are simply the cutest 😘

  18. You look so adorable in all those dresses and I am laughing because I have put most of them in my cart. Oh lordy, your site makes me buy things. I have been eyeing the Stuart Weitzman boots for a while, but I am vertically challenged- 5’3. Do you think these boots would swallow me up?? I have short legs thus my concern. They are an investment. Any advice would be appreciated. xoxo

  19. I love the first one! It’s somehow dressier but still casual at the same time. You have such a cute style. I have OTK BLack boots and I’m now inspired to try to wear them more.
Q: how tall are you? At 5’8″ I’m afraid all of the items would be too short for my comfort zone.
