Just Momming Around (In A Pretty Little Dress)

Sometimes, a girl just needs a pretty dress.  I spend so much of my time in jeans and sneaks that when the weekend comes (and Mike is around to help)…..why not a dress?  It feels festive, somehow.  More…weekend.

Bonus points if I can keep the sneaks.

My favorite type of dresses are easy, everyday dre– HA!  #lies  In my heart-of-hearts, if I’m being completely honest, my FAVORITE dresses are dramatic, flowing, MET Gala-worthy things with a pattern that brings happy tears to my eyes, a slit up to there, and a label that reads: “Danger:  causes SWOONING.”

My goal, then, is to find pretty dresses that work for my actual life….while acknowledging that in my head I’m one of the glamorous women who swan down a red carpets and Attend The Opera.  (Obviously, in this reality, I’m also 6ft tall.  Obviously.)

But truth be told, I wouldn’t swap my real life for anything.  There’s nothing that makes me feel more beautiful, more at ease in my own skin, than watching my three guys watch me.  And when I make a tiiiiny bit of an effort, when I put on a little makeup, or wear a pretty dress?

It’s like I’m the most glamorous woman in the world.

Here’s to the everyday, Mama.  And to those days when you don a pretty dress amid the whining and the crying because you know you wouldn’t change a thing.

Keep reading for a few scenes from the weekend – one that had it’s share of whining and crying….but also plenty of snuggles, soft touches, and pretty dresses.  LOFT reached out asking me to take a look at a few pieces perfect for Mother’s Day, so I also rounded up my favorite, everyday dresses – the ones that would make me feel just a little bit glamorous.  (It wasn’t hard – LOFT’s dresses are gorgeous right now.)

Outfit Details

dress: LOFT Spacedye Shift Dress (size 2 for reference – I sized up to get a better fit in the shoulders.  Also note:  I hemmed it quite a bit – the dress is quite a bit longer IRL)

sneakers: The Greats Brand

sunglasses: LOFT Sunglasses – obsessed with these – they look and feel much more expensive than they are

bracelets:  Metallic Beaded bracelets (they were on sale so I bought 3 for max impact)

Here are all of my favorite dresses from LOFT right now.  I tried a couple of them on last week – you can find those dressing room selfies here.  Oh and hey:  They’re all currently 30% off!!

A huge thank-you to LOFT for sponsoring this post!!  I love this brand, you love this brand, and LOFT loves moms (like this, YES)….so these articles are a blast to work on.  LOFT also asked me to encourage you to share your own Mother’s Day moments on Instagram with the hashtag #loveloft.  As always, all thoughts, opinions, and product choices are my own.  And readers, thank you for your continued support of The Mom Edit.  It doesn’t go unnoticed, and is so very much appreciated!!

Wow, there are some cute dresses here at really good prices, considering the sale. I might have to try a few. Always looking for summer dresses.

Loft carried a similar four years ago in black and white- I wore it with a statement necklace and heels for my son’s baptism then with converse and flip flops the next summer.

Shana, I adore you more than I ever thought I could adore someone I know only through their blog. I only wish I could have run into you before you left Denver. I’ve always been somewhat ashamed about my love for clothing. Thank you for combining your clear love of fashion with practicality not often seen in the fashion blogging world, as well as wit, and obvious intelligence. Your posts always brighten my day and help me know that there are other smart people who also care about satorial frivolity – perhaps frivolity is not the right word, but I can’t think of anything better. Clothing is art that you get to wear every day, it allows art and creativity to be part of my daily life even if the rest of my day involves seeing patients or changing diapers. It’s wonderful to know that there are others out there that see things similarly.
    Respectfully,
    Jamie in Boulder
    And cheers to the weekend!

Yes, this! My real life friends just aren’t as in to clothes as me, I love this blog, it’s the only one I read. Shayna you look great it this short little dress, but curious what you wear underneath. I find those short wide dresses show a lot!

I am so glad I’m not the only 5’2″ woman who feels tall in my own head! I’m always baffled when clothes don’t fit/I can’t reach/etc. like I am 6′ tall!

How do you always get the exact right length on your hems? I have a few pieces I want to hem, but don’t know how high or how to know what the right length is. Recommendations on even what you tell your tailor from one extremely tall 5’2″ woman to another? Thanks!

Me too! I’ve been reading this blog for .. yikes.. probably 4 or 5 years now, and I’ve improved my fashion slightly but I still look terrible! I keep trying but clothes just don’t seem to look right. I don’t want to look like I’m trying to dress like a teen at 40. I came here trying to find out what to wear now that it’s hot. I guess dresses and sneakers are my only hope.

I love your blog and enjoy the inspiration. I do, however, have trouble relating to a lot of the garments because I’m not on the smaller spectrum. It would be wonderful if you could occasionally broaden your target market and show inspiration that could look good on more people than those in the size 00 – 6?
