I sure hope everyone had a beautiful Mother’s Day! Sienna, Camper and I got to have a special day recently where we pretended to be in France for a bit, right here in Portland. (You may have seen a sneak peek on my Instagram @elletrain) We bought lovely flowers at the adorable City Market and dined on French fare and pastries at St. Honoré. An old man with suspenders and a baguette in hand seriously walked by! I mean. Timing. And to top it all off, it was a sunny day here in PDX and it couldn’t have been lovelier. Special time with my girls plus pastries and sunshine? Good for this mama’s soul.
I wanted to wear a little something out of the norm for me, something with a bit more color that felt a little springy but still practical for chasing a kiddo and a puppy. The result? I came up with a new pairing I adore: springy mini dress + cropped ankle jeans. Check out this combo and our fun mother-daughter day.
I think what works here is the mixing of proportions, that we’ve talked about before here and here…a longer top or tunic (or dress in this case) just works with a shorter pant. I can definitely tell you that I’ve never searched for mini dresses before this combo came to mind. Not. Practical. But there are some super cute styles out there and now we mamas don’t have to miss out! Many of these would make lovely swim coverups, too. Double duty. Always good for a closet piece.
Dress – Free People Perfectly Victorian Embroidered Mini Dress – This dress is great. The embroidery is so lovely and the fabric is nice and lightweight for spring/summer. It’s almost long enough that I may wear it without jeans when it gets hot, but I really am loving it paired with the slim crops. It also comes in ivory, mustard yellow and blue and they’re all gorgeous. It runs a tiny bit small across the chest, but I didn’t size up and it stretched ever so slightly with wear.
Jeans – Madewell Slim Boyjean – I really love these. They do run big, so I sized down one size. They aren’t high rise, but are comfy yet fitted. The inseam length seems to be longer depending on the size. I tried the 27 and they were about one inch longer, so you may need to DIY hem depending on your height. I cannot tell you how good these are though for a vintage type slim jean. I wear them all the time now. Size 26, for reference.
Shoes (c/o) – Sole Society Sepia in Creamsicle – There are super fun. They’re a comfortable height and the fringe and color are so great and fun. I don’t own many colorful shoes and don’t typically feel drawn to orange, but chose these to put a little pop in my wardrobe and am glad I did. They’re lovely with the blue jeans and will be super cute with navy or chambray. The toe box is a little bit tight, but will stretch with time I think and they were great for a lunch outing or would be cute for date night. TTS.
Bag (c/o) – Sole Society Kaili Backpack – It’s no secret TME loves our backpacks. This one is super cute and roomy but not too big. It’s a wonderful size for a day bag and would easily hold a change of clothes or some diapers and wipes.
Choker – (c/o) – Sole Society Genuine Leather Choker – Love this. So soft and comfy to wear and adds a modern touch to any outfit.
Earrings (c/0) – Sole Society Cactus Stud Earrings – Super cute easy summer studs in gold or rose gold.
Dress – Cat & Jack Jade Green Dress (similar)
Mini Dresses for Spring & Summer
We sure had a blast on our mother-daughter day. Sienna’s with me at home 2 days a week right now and I’m really trying to soak up those days instead of get annoyed about having to work with her around. The struggle. But it seriously won’t be long until she’s in Kindergarten (WHAT?!) so I know these weekdays where we can adventure through town together are dwindling fast.
I gotta start planning more of these fun outings with her. She’s such a blast these days and still needs me a little bit and I forget that with her strong independence and strong will. She’s only almost four though. She’s still learning the world. We’re still teaching each other so much every day. The thing I’m not going to teach her though? Is how to correctly say centipede because right now she calls them ‘penelopedes’ and it’s my favorite thing ever.
Here’s to soaking in the every day, mamas.
Thank you so much to Sole Society for sponsoring this post! They have a fun selection of shoes in spring and summer colors right now if you need a little pop in your wardrobe like I did. There are also really great jewelry and bag options to finish out an outfit. As usual, all opinions and product selections were my own. Thank you all for your continued support of The Mom Edit. It doesn’t go unnoticed!
