Motherhood is a beautiful rollercoaster, no?
Up and downs, yes. Bumpy portions, yes. Thrills, yes. Beautiful views, yes. Fearful moments, yes. And mostly, it’s being unable to see what’s just over the hill from you. That, my friends, is both exciting and terrifying. Such is life, I guess.
Sienna just turned four a couple of weeks ago and I know everyone says this but I cannot believe how quickly her first four years have gone. It’s definitely been a beautiful rollercoaster for four years, adjusting our lives to having a new life as a part of it. I can’t imagine it any other way and at the same time I still can’t believe we made another human.
For Sienna’s big day, my mom came to visit. I promised I wouldn’t make her join us in shorts, but I took the shorts styling challenge myself. And she showed up with the most adorable outfit, as usual. We were color-coordinated without even planning it. A mom and her mom and some mom shorts here for you…and a big little girl turning 4.
I swear just the other day Sienna was a tiny eight month old singing her first song. E-I-E-I-eeeeee she would sing when prompted with Old MacDonald. It would come out of this tiny little mouth followed by a giant smile. OMG, I have to find that video.
Now, she’s singing Taylor Swift songs and dancing in her first dance recital…hip hop. That video. You guys.
I’ve noticed in the past few weeks the little cloud of three lifting. There’s been some reverting to toddlerdom, some scary growth-spurt clumsiness, and some serious non-listening to mom, but this little buddy is emerging that I really want to hang out with. This little friend is replacing my adorable but oh-so-dependent toddler. This little social butterfly who recently figured out she adores performing for an audience is becoming one of my best friends.
I’m writing this on an airplane back from a trip to Toronto to see a dear friend. It was the longest I’ve spent away from Sienna since she was born. It was an amazingly wonderful trip that my soul needed, but I’m literally counting the moments until I can see my buddy today.
Tank – Lou & Grey Mesa Swing Top – I really love this top. The pattern is amazing and I love how it feels like an artisan piece. The swing style is flattering and comfy to wear and is nice paired with shorts. I often want a little more volume on top when I wear shorts and this is perfect while still being cool and breezy to wear. It runs a little bit big, but it’s a pullover style so I didn’t size down. Wearing a Small, for reference. I’m also really considering getting the matching shorts!
Bomber jacket (similar) – Macy’s The Edit Chambray Bomber – Mine is old, but this one is very similar. It’s such a great lightweight jacket for warmish days and I kind of prefer this outfit with it while I’m still working on my ahem tan.
Shorts – Madewell Garment Dyed High Waist Shorts – Ok, so the color on these is gorgeous so I wanted to wear them with this outfit, but they run big. I’m wearing too large of a size here (my normal size though), but you couldn’t tell with the swing top. I wanted to try them in the size down but didn’t get to before the shoot. The fabric is so soft and again I adore the color, especially with my mom’s adorable outfit! I also like the option of wearing them cuffed or longer, un-cuffed. Wearing size 27, for reference, but I should try the 26 for a better fit. I ordered these shorts, too, and they have become a new favorite (I sized up one size to a 28 and they’re on sale btw!) but the color and style weren’t quite right for this outfit or post…and I thought I’d get some flack for not wearing actual ‘mom shorts!’ Ha.
Sandals – Avarca Pons – Some of my very favorite summer sandals. Wearing color Taupe here. Fit TTS but if you’re between sizes, size down. They will stretch a little with wear.
Sunglasses – Anthropologie Angelica Sunglasses – These are such a pretty pastel for summer and are comfy to wear…and a great price point! Love.
Top – LOFT Marigold Bell Sleeve Top – Gah…almost sold out. So gorgeous though. My top recently came back in stock, so hopefully this one will, too! Here is another beautiful light floral top in similar colors.
Pants – LOFT Belted Culottes (similar) – Well, my mom chose super cute, very popular pieces. Her exact pants are also sold out, but these culottes are super similar. She loves the off white, but they also come in red or black. Love them for a summer weight pant. Also, mom adores LOFT pants in general, especially the Marisa Fit Crop, for anyone who has a straighter figure she says they’re her new favorites!
Sandals – Bed Stu Seneca Gladiator – These are adorable. I love a semi-high gladiator and the leather on these is gorgeous.
Bag – Rebecca Minkoff Julian Nylon Backpack – Mom loves that this is so lightweight. She has the leather version, too, but this is really great for travel!
On Sienna (similar)
Dress – Oshkosh Polka Dot Chambray Dress
Sandals – Avarca Frailera Style Sandal – love love these that velcro on. They’re so comfy for S and she loves them. They come in a bunch of colors. TTS

I talked to a really nice man from Northern B.C. while our plane was boarding today. He asked about my daughter and her recent birthday came up. He told me that her birthday is the same day as Queen Victoria’s and it all makes sense now. Haha. My little strong-willed, unaffected gal will create her own path in life, no doubt. She and I are so different but similar, too. It took me a while to realize I could create a path at all. She came into the world immediately ready for it.
I’m just so thrilled that I get to watch while she makes her own way in the world. I honestly don’t think I’ve had much to do with the amazing human she is, but I sure am honored I get to stand here and witness it.
Here’s to all you wonder women out there trying to raise the next generation of them…enjoy the rollercoaster ride and rock those mom shorts…
