Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Nursing Tops & Post-Partum Friendly #DressingRoomSelfies

Phew! I made it. I tried on a ton of stuff at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in an attempt to find the best nursing tops.  Which means…I left my baby for the longest time I have in his 5 months of life. I tried shopping with him once and no. IMPOSSIBLE. He doesn’t fall asleep in the stroller unless he cries and screams for about an hour. Thank God he takes a bottle and for my mother-in-law who took care of my babies so I could go to Nordstrom and torture myself. Guess there’s no better way to practice self-control.

If you are a postpartum or/and nursing mom like me this is some of what’s there for us in the sale.

You can find all of The Mom Edit’s 2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Top Picks  – not just postpartum and nursing picks – organized by category (shoes, bags, coats, etc.) by clicking on that link.

Warning: Crazy, messy dressing room. I tried to squeeze as much as I could in those hours without kids so I was a hot mess…and then my boobs couldn’t handle it all…and baby was hungry because I’m not used to pumping and didn’t pump a lot.

Before we start with the tops I’m going to tell you the strapless bra I wear while nursing. I specifically look for soft padded bras that are easy to flip down to breastfeed.

– The one that has worked the most for me during my 3 years of breastfeeding has been this Victoria Secret one. It has a little bit of push up but not much.

– The other I’ve been dying to try but always forget is this one by Third Love. It has amazing reviews and have seen many nursing moms wearing them.

My Favorite Nursing Top

This top is so flattering. Half sweater – half poplin shirt. I didn’t think I would like it that much. Great to nurse in, and is awesome for postpartum. Wear with leggings and OTK boots or fashion sneakers and you’ll be the most fashionable postpartum mama. It comes in two more colors like a beautiful navy (wasn’t available in my size at the store)

Top – Off-the-shoulder poplin sweater (size XS)

Leggings – Trouve Faux Leather Leggings (these are XS, but needed S because tight on pooch) also wanted to try these Spanx ones that are supposed to have better tummy control.

Shoes – Vince Slip ons

The Best Button Downs For Nursing Mamas

I saw this one online and was crazy to try it on. Unfortunately I’m too petite for it, but is great for you taller mamas.

Treasure and Bond Shirt (size XS)

But then I found the following two:

nordstrom anniversary sale nursing tops(Left) Leith Collar stripe top (size XS) What else than vertical stripes and great sleeves to make up for a belly that still looks pregnant? Comes white only too.

(Right) BP Collar Cotton top (size XS) So, the front is not really button down BUT the top part of the back is elastic which still allows it to be easy to nurse in.

Jeans – Hudson High Waist Skinny Jeans (size 25) They are long (for me) but the fit is amazing. I’m obsessed with this brand. Under $100 on sale. I’d do what I always do as a petite, cut them and throw them in the washer.

Boots – Marc Fisher – I’ll wear these until the day I can afford a pair of Stuarts. Try these low heeled ones, I lived in similar during my pregnancy.

Another Favorite Nursing Button Down

The peplum button down. Love how it marks a little the waist and then hides a postpartum belly.

Top – Madewell Peplum top Size XS It also comes in a beautiful blue.

Jeans – High waist Good American Size 25

Shoes – Vince. This color is (hopefully temporarily) sold out but this color is great, too. I’ll be sure to check back for you guys on re-stock. I second Shana these are the most comfortables ever, though for me it only felt half size bigger.

The Nursing-Friendly Sweaters

I gave birth in the middle of winter and lived in high waist leggings, v-neck long sweaters and cool comfy shoes the first 2-3 months.

Sweater – BP V-neck pullover It’s very oversized and I don’t like it too much so I sized down to XXS (comes in plenty of colors) Also tried this Rag & Bone, which is gorgeous but forgot the pic.

Leggings – Zella High waist leggings Wearing S

Nordstrom Signature Cashmere pullover (size XXS) Very oversized. If you’re thinking on investing in cashmere, this sweater is amazing.

Leggings – Trouve Faux Leather Leggings (these are XS, but needed S because tight on pooch)

Shoes – Vince Slip ons

Trouvé Bateau neck sweater (size xs) When you see the retailer pic you can’t really tell if this is nursing friendly, but It totally is! And is soft and long. Comes in gray and oxblood too. I was crazy to try this one but didn’t find it in the store.

Leggings – Trouve Faux Leather Leggings (these are XS, but needed S because tight on pooch)

Shoes – Vince Slip ons

…And When You Feel Ready to Wear Them With Jeans

Top – ASTR the Label V-neck (size XS) Gorgeous Sweater

Jeans – Hudson High Waist Skinny Jeans (size 25) They are long (for me) but the fit is amazing. I’m obsessed with this brand. Under $100 on sale. I’ll do what I always do as a petite, cut them and throw them in the washer.

Shoes – Eileen Fisher Pointy Toe Flat Sorry for the mixed colors but didn’t know which I liked the most.

BP V-neck pullover – BP pullover but in pink (comes in plenty of more colors) Once I started getting a little bit more comfortable I started half tucking the sweaters.

Jeans – High waist Good American Size 25 They are so soft and flattering. I tried the 26 and they fit well for the most part but the 25 fit better.

Shoes – Vince. This color is (hopefully temporarily) sold out but this color is great, too. I’ll be sure to check back for you guys on re-stock. I second Shana these are the most comfortables ever, though for me it only felt half size bigger.

Top – BP Cross Back Pullover  (size XS) Forgot to get the pic of the back, which is gorgeous. It’s long, so is great with leggings. However I kind of tucked it in and let one sleeve fall off the shoulder a bit because otherwise it looks huge on me.

Jeans – Frame Split Hem Jeans – I don’t know why I ever tried these on because I couldn’t take them off. (Size 25)

Shoes – Vince

Let’s Not Forget the Tee

Soft, loose, flattering. Obsessed and comes in more colors.

Top – BP Pocket Tee (size xs)

Jeans – AG Ex-boyfriend Jeans (size 25) Loved them until I saw the bum area. Not flattering on mine.

Shoes – Eileen Fisher Pointy Toe Flat Can’t contain myself when I see cute pointy flats

…Some Forgiving Prints

This top is really pretty. But beware that the wrap is stitched so it can make nursing a little complicated. Grabbing some tiny scissors and taking the stitch off is an option or if you don’t have large breasts like me I think you can manage.

Lush Cold Shoulder Top – Tried XS and S and likes the S better, so size up

Jeans – High waist Good American Size 25 They are so soft and flattering. I tried the 26 and they fit well for the most part but the 25 fit better.

Shoes – Vince. This color is (hopefully temporarily) sold out but this color is great, too. I’ll be sure to check back for you guys on re-stock. I second Shana these are the most comfortables ever, though for me it only felt half size bigger.

Jackets are Everything

I was so thankful my first months postpartum were during cold weather because I could wear jackets. Not only do they hide the fact that your body is going through some crazy transition, but also make an outfit more interesting.  It’s so easy to get stuck in a type of top when you’re trying to hide a postpartum belly and nurse a baby and lets be honest we have to stay away from so many great tops – but a great jacket makes the ones we can wear more fun.  Even if I was wearing my postpartum uniform, a great jacket made me feel confident and put together.

The Embellished Jacket

All in black but feeling like super woman with the gorgeous embroidery.

Blank NYC Embroidered Jacket (size XS)

Rag and bone V-neck sweater (size XS)

Leggings – Trouve Faux Leather Leggings (these are XS, but needed S because tight on pooch) also wanted to try these Spanx ones that are supposed to have better tummy control.

Shoes – Vince Slip ons

The Colored Biker Jacket!

Little bit dressier with OTK boots and a gorgeous colored suede jacket. This jacket is so lightweight and soft!

Leith Purple Suede Jacket (size XS)

Sweater – Rag and bone V-neck sweater (size XS)

Jeans – Hudson High Waist Skinny Jeans (size 25) They are long (for me) but the fit is amazing. I’m obsessed with this brand. Under $100 on sale. I’d do what I always do as a petite, cut them and throw them in the washer.

Boots – Marc Fisher – I’ll wear these until the day I can afford a pair of Stuarts. Try these low heeled ones, I lived in similar during my pregnancy.

The Classic Biker Jacket

When it comes to a black classic biker jacket, I always go for the real thing. If I didn’t have two already I would get this one.

Jacket – Topshop Leather Biker Jacket (size XS)

Top – Madewell Peplum top Size XS It also comes in a beautiful blue.

Jeans – High waist Good American Size 25

Shoes – Vince. This color is (hopefully temporarily) sold out but this color is great, too. I’ll be sure to check back for you guys on re-stock. I second Shana these are the most comfortables ever, though for me it only felt half size bigger.

Of Course the Bomber…

Obsessed with it, wear it over any t-shirt, even the one you haven’t taken off in days and has dried milk. You’ll look great. I promise.

Chelsea 28 Military Bomber

Top – BP Pocket Tee (size xs)

Shoes – Eileen Fisher Pointy Toe Flat

The Blazer

Despite not having a corporate job I love a blazer. I wear them with joggers sometimes (nice, fancy joggers) Loved this one because it was soft and works for dressy and casual occasions.

Blazer – Mural Herringbone  (size S)

Top – BP Pocket Tee (size xs)

Jeans – Hudson High Waist Skinny Jeans (size 25) Under $100 on sale.

Shoes – Eileen Fisher Pointy Toe Flat Which color?

The Utility Jacket

Most gorgeous green. I pulled those strings and made some knots so I could keep that hourglass silhouette. See the left part of the pic where you can see the back.

Jacket – Madewell (size S, but needed XS)

Sweater – Rag and bone V-neck sweater (size XS)

Jeans – Hudson High Waist Skinny Jeans (size 25) Under $100 on sale.

Boots – Marc Fisher

A Statement Cardigan

I have a love/hate relationship with cardigans and envy so much how they look on taller people. An oversized cardigan swallows me whole, but this one is so AMAZING!!

Topshop Patchwork Cardigan

Short Cardigan

This I loved! I totally forgot to leave a top to try this on with (was rushing because of baby) so I just crossed it to hide my super toned abdomen. Wink. It’s gorgeous and would look great just over a nursing vest.

Cardigan – Eileen Fisher Silk and CottonI know it’s expensive but I think it serves many looks and occasions.

Jeans – Frame Split Hem Jeans – I don’t know why I ever tried these on because I couldn’t take them off. (Size 25)

Last But Not Least This Cute Wrap Dress

I adored this dress. The wrap is obviously great for nursing and instead of a stitch to hold it together has a snap. GENIUS! Wear it now with sandals or later with boots and a biker jacket…and I’m loving it over jeans and OTK boots..and off course a biker jacket. Oh and did I mention it’s a total steal?

Dress – Faux Wrap maxi Dress (size XS)

Jacket – Leith Purple Suede Jacket (size XS)

Boots – Marc Fisher – I’ll wear these until the day I can afford a pair of Stuarts. Try these low heeled ones, I lived in similar during my pregnancy.

There were other cute things I didn’t get to try on or that I saw online but not in the store. Check them and all this post below! Happy shopping!

Ps. If you thought I don’t have a postpartum pooch, be aware I’m wearing control panties and high rise leggings and jeans. They are key for me, but some on that later.

About Author

After my oldest was born, I found myself wearing my old tank tops and yoga pants everyday. I had a ton of unworn clothes in the back of my closet and had a little voice in my head saying "why look nice if you're going to be home nursing a baby around the clock?" Now, after change of mindset, I apply my fashion design studies to my everyday craziness and document the things I try here on The Mom Edit and my own blog The Unbosom.  If you can't find me in the bathroom hiding from my kids, I'll be on Facebook or Instagram @theunbosom begging for bedtime!

  1. Love your blog! My daughter Kira is 18 month, and I am expecting another one in December 🙂 You have amazing style and look so pretty! I have limited time to shop on line, and can hardly make it to the store, but this helps so much, thank you for amazing finds at Nordstrom!!!

    • You’re so sweet. Thank you Katya. I totally get the limited time to shop in the store, to be honest this was maybe my second time at Nordstrom as I always order online, even more now that it really has to be something especial for me too venture out with the two…most times I prefer my sanity. Hope you found some great things for the rest of your pregnancy and those postpartum months.

  2. This is awesome! I have an almost four month old daughter and am struggling to get my style back in gear.

    • I think it all depends on your size and how you feel. At first it may seem weird, I got my first strapless bra (the VS one) the first or second week after my milk came in with my first baby and I had no idea what to do with my new boobs, however this particular bra felt supportive and I loved the cups….I wasn’t even looking for a strapless and bought it just because I loved how soft it was…wore it with straps and eventually it became my go to when I needed a strapless.

  3. My Cup Runneth Over on

Love the concept, definitely need the help finding nursing friendly tops. Although there is no way a strapless bra works with my nursing bust (VS does not offer bras in my newly enhanced cup size), nor any button down and most of those v necks would be way too revealing. Love your blog just need to find someone with large nursing boobs, like me!!

  4. Thank you for posting this. Very helpful and stylish. I started following you on IG😊 Can you put together some styles using those high over the knee boots.
