Nordstrom Anniversary Sale – What To Buy (#DressingRoomSelfies Edition)

It’s the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2017!!  I spent a day trying on hundreds of items (no really – did you catch my IG story?) so you don’t have to.  Year after year, we use the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale to stock up on cozy cashmere sweaters, Fall boots, coats, bags, and denim.  And the pieces we pick up at this sale are often the most-worn pieces in our closet, year after year.

On the off chance someone doesn’t know why we’re so excited about this particular sale, here’s the thing:

Most sales discount old merchandise.  The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?  Is a discount on new Fall merchandise.

Now before we dive too deep into my World Of Selfies, I have three public service announcements:

1. Shop all of our top picks from the 2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in our NORDSTROM SALE SHOP

and

2. Stuart Weitzman Over-The-Knee boots are part of the Sale!!

It’s not the Lowlands (flat), it’s not the Highlands (high), it’s a middle-ground boot that looks exactly like the low/highlands, but has a chunky, not-too-high, super-walkable heel.  In short:  it’s the best Weitzman YET.  So if you’ve been drooling after Weitzmans, GO BUY THEM.  Right now.  For real – we’ll wait.

3. Three Most-Loved Pieces From Last Years Sale Have Returned.  Online Only.

If the words James Perse sweatshirt blazer makes your heart beat fast, you’re in luck.  Also?  My Vince sneaker-boots and my pretty green North Face raincoat……allll back.  You can see how I wore them in our Top 15 Things To Buy From the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Now.  Let’s get serious.  I just spent 12+ hours at Nordstrom – which was even longer than the 2016 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale selfies –  and, true to form, I gots some things to SAY.   So get comfy, pour yourself some coffee, and promise you won’t make fun of my mad, mad hair.  It was a long day.

Start With a Leather Jacket

I tried on a bunch of leather jackets, and I have two favorites that you will see again, mixed with other pieces:nordstrom anniversary sale best leather jacketsMackage leather jacket (xs) | Joie Navy Leather Jacket (xs)

However, there are a ton of leather jackets to choose from, so here are few additional ones worth checking out:

TOP ROW

1. Topshop Moon Suede Biker Jacket – surprisingly soft, pretty color, only smelled a tiny bit like cow. Size 2 US.

2. Halogen Leather Jacket – I’m wearing an XXS petite in this jacket.  I’d say size down so it’s not too boxy.

3. Ted Baker London Lizia Leather Biker Jacket – the rose gold zippers are very ladylike.

BOTTOM ROW

4. BLANKNYC Suede Moto Jacket – this one is a reader and team fav, and I can see why.  Comes in a bunch of colors.

5. Trouvé Raw Edge Leather Jacket – I didn’t love the collar on this one. If you look closely, you can see that it doesn’t lay well. This Andrew Marc New York ‘Felix’ Stand Collar Leather Jacket, however, is a much better choice.

6. Belstaff Carrack Leather Jacket. Gorgous, but SO expensive.  Halogen Zip Detail Leather Moto Jacket is similar.

Consider This Shoe + Bag Combo

This color combo is perfect for Fall, yet feels completely fresh and unique.  And YES:  that is the TME favorite, wear-everywhere, Rebecca Minkoff Julian backpack!  I’m pairing it with a super comfy (and CUTE) Kate Spade fringed sneaker.

If You Must, Get A Cardigan

Longtime readers know that my relationship with cardigans is best described as complicated.  The cozy, comfy, voluminous cardigans I’m drawn to rarely look good on my 5’2″ self.  And can ya guess what the Anni Sale had in spades this year?  YUP.

This ones for you, tall friends.  #everyone

That striped cardi is my hands-down fav.  I’m tempted to get it, even though it looks a little silly.

However!  There were two cardigans that would actually fit us shorter gals….both are cashmere.  Because drape is our friend.

Halogen Cashmere Cardigan

This one is thin, drapey, and not overwhelming.  As a bonus, it can be tied at the waist for a different look.

Get These Gray-Velvet Cargo Pants

One of my very favorite surprises from the Anni Sale were these Joie cargo pants.  They’re a soft gray, velvet and cargo.  I styled them up a bunch of different ways:

Stripes, Obviously

Equipment’s cashmere sweaters are always a win.  I especially love the little buttons on the side.  And this pair of Rag and Bone denim is SO soft, they feel like pajamas.

Also of note?  These Vince loafers might be the softest, most comfortable thing I’ve ever put on my feet. But size down a full size – they run really big.

Vince Sweaters and Leather Jackets – Totally My Jam

If I didn’t already have a black leather jacket, this one would’ve come home with me.  The leather is butter soft, not shiny, and the XS fits perfectly for layering over a sweater.  This outfit is basically what I wear all Fall/Winter long.

(oh hey – this leather jacket comes in a pretty caramel color too…hmmm….)

Plaid Is Rad (And My 2nd Fav Sweater)

Remember that gorgeous, caramel Theory jacket I bought around the holidays?  This plaid Theory topper is the same cut.  It’s not a big, warm winter coat, it’s more like a blazer/wool-coat hybrid. And layers beautifully.

Also, I over-exposed the 2nd pic so you can see the detail in the sweater.  Basically, I’m all about the BIG CUFFS.

The Coolest Scarf + Walkable Booties

This Missoni scarf adds such a cool pop of color.  And these Sam Edelman booties are made of insanely soft leather – the back is designed to fold down, so you can wear them like mules, or keep it up.  Both ways work – I tested it.

Try a Poncho Instead

That Missoni scarf from above? Yeah, it comes in PONCHO form. Truly the kind of piece that will never go out of style.  (Missoni is ALWAY fabulous).  No brainer.nordstrom anniversary sale stuart weitzman

Bombs Away!

These pieces are unsuspecting workhorses.  This silk tee can go from office to party, be dressed down, dressed, up, or make a va-va-voom dress more conservative.  (See it in action with the Alexander Wang dress).

Try An Updated Plaid Shirt

If there was one trend I didn’t see coming, it was the plaid shirt resurgence.  These plaid shirts are long – tunic-like, in fact – and are the most perfect thing with either cropped jeans + booties or with over-the-knee boots.  It’s the long-short, having a plaid moment.

Oversized Plaid (from Paige Denim)….

This Paige denim plaid shirt is more expensive than the B.P. ones, but it’s also thicker (still drapy, tho), and has longer sleeves and a longer length in general.  Overall, it was just too big for me, but it’s so pretty and soft, I had to include.

Consider The Kimono Trend

There’s always one unexpected piece in the sale.  Something that I didn’t know I needed, yet is just the thing I’ve been searching for.

And, two years running, it’s from Treasure and Bond.

Last year it was a leather vest, this year?  This floral kimono.  Slight crazy-cat-lady, but in the best possible way.

Also note the DVF silk blouse.  When putting outfits together, there’s often a ton of tweaking and swapping out of items. I found this blouse to be a savior item.  Meaning it worked with literally everything I paired it with.  First time.  So easy.

So…..this T by Alexander Wang dress is really, really good. It’s soft, sucks you in (but not too much), and is thick enough to cover lumps and bumps.  I was actually shocked by how good this one is.

It’s so comfy that I wanted to play around with warming it up for Fall/Winter.  Here’s what I liked:

  1. Shana thank you for the great tips! Their site and app are not working right now – ack!! Hopefully it’s fixed soon. I. Am. Freaking. Out.

  2. Your look gorgeous in everything! The Wang dress in my fav! Thanks for this cool inspiring post! Love your wispy bangs too!

  3. DOROTHY PAZIN on

Thank you! This is so much work for you and very appreciated! The site isn’t working but fingers crossed it’s up soon!!!

  4. You nailed it! Drooling over the velvet brocade Edelman boots but that heel may be too much for my 5’10” height! Can’t wait to pull the trigger on my “bag”. Thanks for the reinforcements!!!

  5. My order finally went through after trying 5 different times and each time it told me that it didn’t work, so if you’ve tried a few times maybe check your email and see if you get a surprise. I am a teensy bit worried that the order possibly went through all 5 times and I will be getting everything in quintuplet.

    • Mine finally worked too! But it was a very painful process. Luckily I am obsessed and didn’t give up. 😂

      • I understand the obsession. I had to actually refill my cart a couple of times because the submit would fail and empty it. (And we’re just going to gloss right over the fact that I am still purchasing items…UGH.)

      • OMG! so you feel that way too!! but at least this is your JOB…I have no excuse except…I have a MOM EDIT?SHANA style obsession..:) in a good way….Thank you really for all the work you put in to this…but seriously…what came home with you?

        • Navy Joie leather jacket. Olive green sweater, and black vince sweater. Paint splatter AG. The entire gray jeans going out outfit (brocade booties, blush pink mock neck sweater). That little DVF cream silk blouse. I have to order the tan Vince loafers (they didn’t have my size) and the white DV booties. Kate spade sneakers, tie-waist sweatshirt and the little ruffle sleeve tee (with stripes) I just threw on my IG. I’m still debating the minkoff green – do I really need another? I MIGHT. I also ordered that Ralph Lauren trench just to try. I would’ve gotten that Theory plaid coat if I didn’t already have a similar. Debating the Weiztmans – I already have Lowlands…hmmmm…will prob pick up the equipment silk blouse and maybe the equipment striped sweater, but in navy/oxblood. Obviously I’m no help, lol. Ask me again in a few days. Hopefully I can I narrow it down better.

          • Hey Shana – I truly love this blog, read it obsessively, and never ever comment on the internet but I have a question. I have the Rebecca Minkoff bag in black (found on this blog) and LOVE it. I ordered both the white and the green – keep one, both, or neither? I love the green but am worried about the suede getting ruined in random NYC rain – have you ever successfully waterproofed suede?

Also any experience with Aquatalia booties? I ordered suede ones on sale that are supposedly waterproof; I love them but am skeptical.

  6. I found your blog last year during this sale and my jaw hit the floor when I saw how you styled stuff. I couldn’t wait to see what you found this year! You definitely knocked it out of the park again! AMAZING!

    • Thank you for this!! Truth be told, I get realllly nervous for this sale. It’s like….my Olympic event, haha. Appreciate your kind words. Really and truly.

  7. There’s a BP bootie that’s similar to the Lucky perforated booties you had last year that you loved. Thoughts? Have you tried the BP booties? I was kicking myself all year for not getting the Lucky booties.

  8. I ordered the James Perse blazer, the Joie velvet pants, the Equipment striped sweater, AND the asymmetrical “softest sweater ever” purely because of these selfies. And that was after I had already lobbed in an order at 9:37 a.m. SHEESH.

  9. OMG, I can’t imagine how many hours you spent just putting together this blog post, let alone the foot work.
I am obsessed with those paint splatter AG jeans you are wearing and I’m so glad i ordered them last night. Also had to order the Mackage leather jacket but I’m second guessing not being braver about the sepia color.

  10. Julia ashbridge on

Ugh….. So. Much. Shopping but I don’t neeeeeed anything. Except a rain coat. Does the Noethnface one work in the Fall/Winter?

    • Yes! Well, possibly. It’s not warm enough for a Michigan winter, but it IS insulated, and warm enough for temps in the 40s.

  11. I took your advice on a lot of stuff (finally I will own the James Perse blazer, yay!) Just wondering though on the Joie pants, your description was “velvet” and your close up selfie very much looked like that. However, the site says “soft cotton” – no mention of velvet. I hope the pants are the right link…however no other Joie pants in velvet listed on the site. Do you think the N description is just wrong?

    • Sooooo…I had to google the definition of velvet to answer this question, haha. Velvet is “a closely woven fabric of silk, cotton, or nylon, that has a thick short pile on one side.”

So OK. The Nordstrom site isn’t wrong, they are made of cotton, but they do have a “thick short pile on one side”, so when I’m looking at them, I think velvet. 🙂

  12. I went to the sale this am (in person) and was underwhelmed. But I’m more about curating than accumulating right now, so I made a beeline for the Mackage jacket (love love it) and a few other things. Zero accessories, zero shoes, zero denim (I have 70 pair, so I think I’m good 🙂 ) I went online later on and still nothing that thrilling. Happy you found so many items though.

    • I’m a little underwhelmed too, and for probably the same reasons. Focusing on making what I have really work. I ended up with 5 things, mostly sweaters because I live in MN, and you know, sweater weather like 9 months out of the year….but I ordered all of them in multiple sizes to find the best fit so we’ll see.

    • I’m also a bit disappointed in this year’s sale for the same reasons. Lots of items look incredible but aren’t what I can wear to work. (Looking at you Vince sneaker boots!)

And can we talk about the number of ridiculously long cardigans? What’s up with that? Sure, they’re great with skinny jeans or leggings and I have several. But they don’t work with my professional wardrobe. Bah!

  13. Oh my word I LOVE this post! SO appreciate all the work you put into it all. And, the styling? The styling is REMARKABLE. I am loving so many of the outfits. And while I am a taller mama- much of it would still work! Now it is narrowing the 101 items in my cart down…Honestly? I adore everything in this post. I adore TME. And I adore YOU! Thank you!!!!

      • Shana, thank *you* SO MUCH. I’d love your thoughts on that Mackage leather jacket? I am SO tempted. Yet I don’t *need* one…but it looks gorgeous. I have a friend who is in her late 60’s who still wears and rocks her leather jacket from the 1970’s…I strive to be her! And, the other question- the Rebecca Minkoff bag with the studded strap- I LOVE. Yet it says unlined. How was it in person? Think it will hold up?

  14. Wow, the Kate Spade sneaks are already sold out in many sizes (including mine). So is your favorite cashmere sweater in the olive green color. Holy Oprah effect, Shana!

  15. Thank you so much Shana! Started following TME last Nordstrom sale…you really helped me get out of my post baby fashion slump! Now I’m pregnant again…the only thing keeping me from ordering EVERYTHING. I’m 6’2” so sometimes the looks don’t translate but a lot of your recommendations really work for me too! Been silently reading for awhile and just wanted to say how much I love this blog and how inspiring you all are to keep this mom stylish AND comfortable!

  16. Love all this and thank you!!! Quick question, I was going to order the Ag jeans and Joie pants but wasn’t sure why different sizes?? Is one tts and the other slightly different or one run bigs/one small?? Any input to sizing between the two would be greatly appreciated!!!

  17. Shana I live for this post every year!! For those of us who are allergic to cashmere (I know, the horror!!) did you see any other sweaters you like? For anyone considering the Equipment floral blouse I had to size up for my F cup chest but it’s really nice. I also bought a Veronica Beard moto jacket that is to die for!!

  18. Dang, you straight up camped out in that dressing room! Love your dedication and hard work! So greatly appreciated. Question- was wondering your thoughts on the Rag & Bone cold shoulder sweater? It was a splurge for me but it was more flattering than I thought it would be. I thought it might have made an appearance in the dressing room selfies.

  19. I bought the Mackage jacket last year during the anniversary sale. Cannot tell you how much I love it!! I obsessed over which size. Got the medium ( 5’8, 130 lbs with longish arms). It fit great! It’s well worth it!! I get compliments all the time!!

  20. Somehow the website issues caused my order to go through TWICE…so I will have an extra pair of those cute Kade Spade sneakers in a size 10 if anyone wants them!!!

    • Yes! What is the best way to arrange this? I wonder if you could contact customer service- and if they would charge my card and redirect the second pair?

      • They already shipped but if you message me your address via email I can send them to you. You can just pop a check in the mail or maybe we can deal with payment via paypal? I don’t do this often, lol! My email is dawolfe27@yahoo.com

  21. Does the Treasure & Bond Ruffle Blouse run big? I usually wear an XS (I think you do too?), so wondering if I should size up to a medium as well? Nordstrom says it runs TTS. Thanks!

    • I’m wearing a medium because it was the smallest size they had in store. And I loved the print! Normally, I’m an XS in these tops. (I did try on the xs in a different print, but didn’t like the print as much. And while it was smaller, it was still nice and long for layering.)

  22. Honestly, this is so out of my league, like another galaxy, price-wise. I can’t even imagine laying down that cash in one-go, let alone over several years, and that’s for only one sale!! In general that’s true, so I have no idea why I even keep reading?!? I guess that’s a tribute to the candor :). Lol. I guess I just feel the need to speak up, maybe just to remind everyone of another side of reality? Not that it matters, but I do believe there tend to be spirals we all get on for justifying ourselves. For me recently it’s been literature and math learning tools for home schooling (only the best will do for our kids, right?) or dietary things (we really need x/y/z to be healthy). Learning to step back, wait, reflect before buying ;). On another note, I’ve been wanting to ask for a different kind of post more on body shapes and teaching about certain styles and cuts. Since I have no clothing budget and really only do a tiny bit of shopping once a year, I have a really hard time knowing what will actually look good on my body. I’d love more posts about trends/cuts/styles in relation to body types, like “look out for this if you have…” or “I tried this and this is why it doesn’t work for me, but looks great on so-and-so”. It just seems as if anything you guys want works for you whereas when I go shopping I’ll grab 40 things only to take home nothing!!! Anyway, as you now know, my readership gives basically zero payback to you, but if you find this idea interesting, I’d appreciate it!!

    • Yes! This exact comment all the way down to the homeschooling. I follow TME and LOVE it but don’t spend a lot of money on clothes. And the literature thing for homeschooling? My state allows homeschool curriculum write-offs, so you can bet if I am buying a book it is going to be the most beautiful one I can find! And my oldest is 14 and currently reading a lot of the books that I am interested in….it’s a problem! I’ll make a shout out for different body types too- size 12 pear shape, so a lot of the lovely ladies on this blog don’t help me figure out what works for me. Still visit every day though.

  23. Shana!
I need help/advice. I caved and ordered the backpack, thinking – it would be great when I go on outings with the family. it is GORGEOUS, but I am wondering if I should do a different color/material (not suede) I am concerned about the longevity of the material and also I need it to be ok ALL seasons! So help…..what would you recommend. Keep suede or do a leather?
    Thanks,
    Rachel

  24. I love your posts from the dressing room!!! You style those outfits like a boss! I waited too long on one of the bags and the Kate Spade sneakers. I am hoping they come back in stock soon.
P.S If you ever need an assistant for the next Nordstrom Sale dressing room selfie – I’m your gal!

  25. Shana, I stumbled across your Nordstrom posting and now I’m in the poor house! Yikes. I love your casual/chic vibe….I was wondering….you are a beautiful petite woman who can wear almost anything and make it look good— as are most of the Mom editors on your blog. Any chance you could find a Mom editor who is not plus size, but not an xs to do some fitting room selfie excursions? Love the way you style everything and would love your suggestions for those of us who are more challenged by their height/weight and slip into larges most days.

      • Maria Grenke on

Yes to this! I love your blog and started following religiously during last year’s ani sale but being a 10/12 size L somethings just don’t work for my body type… such as The Joie Navy Jacket (so sad, it is AMAZING!). But thank you for all your efforts TME team… you’ve upped my closet game tremendously this past year!

      • That’s awesome! I’ve become obsessed with TME. I may have to work up the courage to do some fitting room selfies myself and fly them by you.

  26. Mary Darlington on

Shana I love your suggestions because I’m a tiny person like you! I love, love LOVE the Ted Baker London Lizia leather biker jacket. My 16 yo daughter just stole my biker jacket from the 90’s, so I need to replace it! I would wear it with the Stuart Weitzman over the knee boots, a denim shirt & skinny jeans.

  27. Lisa O'Leary on

LOVING the Topshop colorblock cardigan! Pair it with some comfy boyfriend jeans and a Caslon plain white T. Done!

  28. It would be awesome if you put together a post of “actual items that made it home with me from the Nordstrom sale”. Perhaps not that title exactly. Lol. But would love to hear what made the final cut. I actually got a pair of adidas superstars from the big kids section. I’m a sneaker gal!!!

  29. Danielle Mizuno on

Shana- thank you for the round up! So helpful to narrow down items. Can you tell me the color of the sweater in your “My Favorite Sweater + My Favorite Jacket”. Is it the Tuscan Olive? Because it looks different in your pictures then online.
