What I’m Wearing This Week (The End-of-Summer Version)

Hey y’all. I have no witty thoughts right now. I just have some summatime daily outfits to share. I started to write about the weather in Portland, but just like my snarky weather app said the other day, it’s “boring outside.”  Apparently ‘boring’ on this weather app means in the 70’s which is ok with me, seeing as it told me 10 days ago when it was 106 out “Oh, good. I’ve always wanted to *&%$ing be burned alive.” (If you like a little snarky with your morning weather report, get this app for sho).

Ok, no more weather talk. It’s tricky to dress this time of year, though, when the temps range so much.  If you guys have any end-of-summer style inspo for the rest of us, throw a pic onto IG and use the tag #TheMomEditStyle.  We could all use a little help. (And we’d love to feature you on The Mom Edit’s IG.)

Here are the end-of-summer outfit combos that have been working for me….

Balancing Out Comfy Pants

This first ensemble is a new favorite because it’s essentially wearing PJ pants in public. But who wouldn’t want to at least have on comfy pants when you hit up the local kid’s science museum full of screaming children? #winning?

I like to add a more structured top when I’m wearing super casual pants (aka PJs). It makes it look like I might have put a bit more thought into it than just rolling out of bed. I wish wish this top weren’t out of stock, but the one’s I linked to below are from the same lovely block-print clothing line, Po-em. knit joggers tank black sandals

Po-em Tank – I adore the shape and style of this tank. Sadly it’s sold out in this print, but there’s a gorgeous indigo print and a peach print that are both lovely. Wearing a Small.

H&M Joggers – Lightweight, soft and super comfy. Love these with structured top or jacket to make them feel more put-together. Wearing a Small.

Born Arica Sandals – Most cushiony sandals ever, but still feminine and flattering. So comfy. TTS.

Rebecca Minkoff Julian – This links to the medium size, a little smaller than mine, but loving this updated gray color and the softer suede. (Unofficial spokesperson for the Minkoff Julian…best bag ever)

Step-Up Shorts With A Pretty Top

Shorts are a love/hate for me. Olive green military shorts and black cutoffs are definitely my go-to’s, but I feel like I have to try harder when it comes to wearing shorts…hence the cute floral blouse instead of a tee. Shoes are a delicate balance with shorts, too, but a cork flatform sandal is comfy and flattering on the legs.

This is my most favorite ice cream in the entire world, by the way. If you go to Salt & Straw get the Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons half scoop and a half scoop of the Coava Coffee and you won’t be disappointed.

Abercrombie Woven Floral Top – So love this top. It’s cool and just flowy enough. Fits TTS. Wearing a Small.

MKA Military Shorts (similar) – A pair of olive shorts is a great wardrobe staple, IMO.

Dinner Out In Casual Portland

My parents typically visit during the summer, and when parents visit it means we try out allll the restaurants. Sienna calls my mom Nonna so of course we have to hit up Nonna Tavern on her visits. I feel like visitors and eating out means getting a little bit dressed up, but Portland is pretty casual and let’s be honest, so am I. I love a soft t-shirt dress with a special detail like a cutout back or hi-low hem to hit that perfect I’m-trying-but-not-too-hard vibe. Sadly, my favorite Trouve dress is finally sold out, but loving this one (on major sale!).

Publish Aimee Knit Dress (similar)

Born Arica Sandals – Most cushiony sandals ever, but still feminine and flattering. So comfy. TTS.

Rebecca Minkoff Julian – This links to the medium size, a little smaller than mine, but loving this updated gray color and the softer suede.

Feeling Shy In Shorts? Wear A Long Cardigan

Sometimes I waiver on whether I’m fully committed to a shorts outfit or not, especially early in the day.  I’m also a typical Northwesterner who seriously cannot go anywhere without a jacket. This outfit is one of my favorites as it takes care of both issues. Usually by the time it heats up enough in the day, I’m ok with letting go of the sweater, but until then it’s my security blanket. Plus, I think it looks cool.

Culture Phit Monroe Cardigan (similar) – I love a long, light cardigan for wearing over shorts or with leggings. Such a great piece to have and a bit more interesting than the traditional cardigan length.

Washed V-Neck Tee (similar) – I like this v-neck style even better than the one I have on. When your black pieces are washed or faded you don’t have to worry about them looking weird together. #toomuchblackclothing #never

Levi’s 501 Cutoff Denim Shorts (similar) – I prefer a bit faded black wash for my denim shorts. Loving the Levi’s.

Dolce Vita Sonja Boots – Favorites. Size down 1/2 size for wearing without socks (which I prefer).

Interesting Color Combos Are Fun

This was one of the first days it cooled off a tiny bit and I was all “hallelujah I can wear my jeans!” I heart jeans, as you probably know. Apparently I’ve gotten rid of most of my dressy tank tops, so I had to get creative since it was still kinda warm out. I had this tank on and wanted a fun shoe for dinner out and this fab color-combo came together. I don’t wear bright heels often, but when I do…it’s with a dark muscle tee and distressed denim to balance them out. Haha. #nevertoogirlie

Joe USA Burgundy Tank (similar) – LOVE a tank in this color. It goes great with neutrals or brights!

Madewell Slim Boyjean  (same fit) – Run true to size, mid-rise. One of my favorites. If you want more distressed like mine, these Abercrombie jeans look very similar and super cute.

Sole Society Sepia Sandals – Cute and a nice heel height. Run true to size, but toe strap is a bit narrow.

Rebecca Minkoff Julian – This links to the medium size, a little smaller than mine, but loving this updated gray color and the softer suede.

Street Fair Fun

Last weekend we hit up the Alberta Street Fair (one of my favorite neighborhoods). We wound up walking about 30 blocks total so it was good I wore my comfort sandals. Again, a more structured top is nice with cutoffs, I think. This combination wound up being a great choice for the day and I didn’t even bother with a jacket!

Melrose & Market Top (similar) – I wish I could find more tops cut like the one I have (older Abercrombie and sold out). I love the sleeve length. For some plaid versions cut similar to mine, click here.

Levi’s 501 Cutoff Denim Shorts (similar) – I prefer a bit faded black wash for my denim shorts. Loving the Levi’s.

Born Arica Sandals – Most cushiony sandals ever, but still feminine and flattering. So comfy. TTS.

Rebecca Minkoff Julian – This links to the medium size, a little smaller than mine, but loving this updated gray color and the softer suede.

Shop My Most-Worn Summer Pieces

Some of these pieces are great transitional pieces…throw on a jacket and you can easily wear them into fall. A lot of these are my go-to favorites for multiple seasons.

I feel like end-of-season is a tough time to keep things interesting and fresh when it comes to getting dressed. Have you come up with any good end of summer combos or pieces you love to wear this time of year? Some of you have even started back to school already, yes? Craziness. Stay cool out there…

Meet Laura! She's a reader turned contributor and we couldn't be happier to have her as part of the team. Her fun, creative style is, as she says, "somewhere between Madewell and Joan Jett" (YES.) and she delivers some mean dressing room selfies so keep an eye out for those. Fun fact? She loves getting her haircut and we love to see what she has up her sleeve.

  1. I’ve been reading TME since it was ANMJ but I don’t think I’ve ever commented. Just want to say that you are my favorite contributor. I love your style!

  2. Agreed. I am newer to TME but Laura is definitely my favorite contributor too! Her style is on point. Love the northwestern vibe and practicality while still being fashionable. I’m going to have to go in to Abercrombie next time I’m at the mall! Thanks. 😊

  3. I love living in the South (though I grew up in the PNW), but I just have to say this is even trickier for us down here. The rest of the country starts moving on to theirs tall boots and sweaters with their pumpkin lattes in hand and we are still sweltering well into October. For example, along cards is laughable right now in Atlanta, but a great idea for October days to come. For now, we carry on with our cut-offs, tank tops and flip flops for another 8 weeks or so.

    • I echo the heat thing – I’m in TX and sweating to death for another two months. On my crankiest days I blast my AC and wear a sweater drinking a pumpkin latte because I miss my beloved midwest with real fall!!

      • Christy Hartman on

Yessss, sweating just thinking about layers! Right now it’s shorts, airy cotton tops and sandals. It’s so hot in Houston right now my Apple Watch battery swelled up and popped the screen off! The Genius Bar said it’s not usually under warranty but they were making exceptions. So I guess I’m not the only one. Crazy.

  4. Robyn Chamberlain on

Just wanted to add a third compliment to the comments section – Laura, I love your posts! You help give me the edge that I strive to achieve but have trouble doing so on my own. I am always pumped when your posts come out and I buy something every. single. time. You da best.

  5. Ditto to the Laura love! By far my fave. Perfect “comfy with a rocker vibe” that just perfectly aligns with how I want to get dressed. I’m so with you on the “committing to shorts” thing (at least until the heat forces me into no longer caring), and I snatched up a long thin Carri when I saw one today. Can’t wait to try it!

  6. I love these things but I have to add a PSA–that washed black v-neck tee from Nordstroms? DO NOT BUY! The dye rubbed off all over my brand new $200 bag and my SKIN! Did not come off my skin for 2 days. Never came off my bag. This is after washing too. I read the comment after and the same thing happened to lots of people…one woman’s $1500 LV bag was ruined. Yikes.

  7. Wow, thank you all so much. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Sometimes it feels like I’m just out of ideas, but you guys are seriously the most encouraging. I’m sorry to those Southerners in the mix! Maybe the long cardi in the car for when you hit the freezing movie theater or restaurants? Thanks again y’all! I’m glad to know some of these combos are working for you, too.

  8. I echo the Laura love – cool and badass.

Also…how do the Born sandals run? I am consistently a 6 1/2, but Born does not have half sizes for sandals. Size down?
