Our Favorite Mascaras & A Lash-Saving Secret

So….the holidays are here. Already.  And I suspect many of you have a shindig or two coming up, so let’s talk….lashes. Specifically, mascaras.  Longtime readers know I love my fake eyelashes, but they can be reallly hard on my own lashes.  So I need mascaras that are not only gentle, but that can compete with the falsies.  Below are the best mascaras that I’ve found for daily use, for max drama, for priming and repairing your lashes (and I’ve included the go-to mascara I’ve been using on brides for their big day).

  1. It Cosmetics Hello Lashes 5-in-1 Mascara: This is my favorite daily mascara.  After using fake lashes for YEARS, my lashes were in desperate need of some TLC.  This conditioning formula is volumizing AND lengthening, but the best thing about it is the lash-enhancing serum in it.  The brush separates your lashes easily and has a ball on the end for getting hard-to-reach lashes.  It’s paraben-free, fragrance-free, phthalate-free, and sulfate-free.
  2. Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara: This is hands-down my favorite mascara to use on lower lashes.  For years I didn’t wear any mascara on the bottom because it would always clump or smudge no matter what formula I used.  Enter this little wonder . . . the small brush makes applying mascara to the bottom lashes easy and it stays put.  LOVE.
  3. Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara (also in waterproof, although the original version is better at getting those crazy big lashes): This is the mascara I use on (almost) all of my brides.  It gets HUGE lashes, stays put all day and is great for special occasion looks.  (Pair over the primer below for maximum drama!)
  4. It Cosmetics Tightline Waterproof Full Lash Length Black Mascara Primer: Ok so this one is technically a primer, but I’ve often used it alone on top AND bottom lashes.  The brush is super skinny so you can get right down to the roots of your lashes – something that’s difficult to do with those big brushes that are great for volume.  When used as a primer your lashes get an extra WOW factor.

So there are my favorite mascaras for different looks from dramatic to daily wear.  BUT.  I think what’s really saved my lashes from the wear and tear of falsies is RevitaLash ADVANCED Eyelash Conditioner.  Shana has used Latisse in the past with good results, but I was nervous about the women who claimed it caused discoloration in their eyes.  So, I gave RevitaLash a try and I cannot explain the difference in my lashes.  To say they were sparse before is an understatement.  Since using this (every day to every other day), they’re so much thicker and longer.  A tube of this lasts FOREVER and it really works.  (Shout out to Rachel at Superior Aesthetics for her recommendation!)

Did I miss anyone’s favorite mascara?  Let us know in the comments below and keep an eye out for a review of those magnetic lashes coming soon!

XOXO,

Scotti

  1. Dying to hear about the magnetics….& I am also super curious about this stuff I keep seeing on my FB feed….Thrive Cosmetics Liquid Lash Extension Mascara. Has anyone tried it??

  2. Blinc mascara, amplified version – forms microtubes around your lashes and never smudges or flakes once it sets. And I work 12 hour night shifts! A friend of mine was going through some hard times and crying a LOT and she said this mascara saved her! I’ve been using it since my wedding… 15 years ago! There’s nothing else like it. I try samples of other brands occasionally but honestly this baby is in a league of its own. ❤️

    • Love this stuff too, the little tubes it leaves in the sink are kind of awesome, or gross??? But the stuff works really well. My only complaint was that it dried up before using the whole tube, but I don’t wear make up every day and always throw my mascara away before its empty- just wish I didn’t have to given the price.

    • I love trying new mascaras (I have a “rule” that no woman should leave the house without mascara) but the one I keep coming back to for years is Loreal’s Beauty Tubes in the red and white container. NEVER a shadow under my eyes and comes off easily with water. Have you tried it? How does it compare to Blinc?

  3. Buxom mascara is absolutely fabulous! The brush may be the key here- it’s rubbery instead of bristled and separates without clumping. It’s my go to for everyday!

  4. Scotti, do you have suggestions for a good mascara for sensitive eyes? I have been trying to find something that doesn’t itch like crazy since L’Oreal’s Bare Naturale was discontinued (I see it on eBay but those puppies are OLD at this point and I’ve run into trouble with old mascara before). It seems like It Cosmetics might be a good bet since it is formulated without various things–have you found it’s any less itchy/drying?

    • I have really sensitive eyes as well and have good luck with Tarte’s “Gifted” mascara as well as the one from Honest Beauty.

        • I have stupidly, annoyingly allergic-to-everything eyes and I also love Tarte mascara. My favorite is actually Lights, Camera, Lashes (in the purple tube). Also great: Pixi’s volumizing mascara; Pacifica water-resistant mascara; Buxom
          Lash.

I’d love a recommendation for a product that is more of a lash tint. I used to use a Neutrogena product that gave my already-long light lashes a nice bit of color, but it has been discontinued. Kind of the opposite of the subject of this post, I know, but it would be appreciated!

    • I’ve used the lash tint by Benefit. I used on my lower lashes because regular mascaras just made me feel like Clockwork Orange.

  6. For several years now I’ve mostly used It’s So Big Mascara by Elizabeth Mott. I buy it on amazon and once or twice a year they usually have a two for one sale. I like it because all mascaras seem to smudge or flake and this one only very slightly flakes if you rub it, otherwise it stays on all day. But I’d like to find a more natural mascara so maybe I’ll try the first one Scotti mentioned the next time I experiment.

  7. Please try Thrive’s Liquid Lash Extensions. Yes I purchased them off Facebook advertising and I ain’t ashamed to admit it. Makes your lashes HUGE and no flaking -waterproof ish and sooo easy to remove.

I love revitalash & revitabrow too- amazing- I also love their primer & mascara – it keeps your lashes soft & feathery

Rodan and Fields Lash Boost is amazing for Lash growth and there was no problem with darkness under the eyes at all. I’ve recently started using Too Faced Troublemaker mascara, but I’m thinking I actually don’t like it as much as Benefit Roller Lash. That mascara is the best I have ever used. Ever.

    • I agree, Benefit Roller Lash. Hands down my favorite. Not too over-the-top dramatic, but makes my lashes look amazing and doesn’t flake or irritate my crazy sensitive, contact wearing eyes!
