My Winter Capsule Wardrobe…STYLED: Outfit 3

So, here we are easing (seriously, slowly easing) into spring and my winter capsule wardrobe update is just as slowly winding down. Slowly, because I’ll still be wearing most of these pieces for a while. Not only due to cool temps up here, but also due to the versatility of these pieces. I had no idea how this would go since it was my first attempt at this type of thing, but I can honestly say it’s been a blast.

To review, here are the five items and the first two looks. You can see the whole article on my first look here and on the second look here.

The Third Outfit – The Duster

City chic was the vibe I was hoping to achieve for this wardrobe update and the last piece of the five was kind of the impetus for this challenge. I found this black duster/overcoat when I tried some Topshop items last fall and was pleasantly surprised by it.

Let me tell you why I love this jacket. It’s chic, it’s versatile and it’s different. It’s not a jacket style I’ve defaulted to for years and it’s not something you see everywhere. It’s a little bit blazer and a little bit trench coat vibe and a lot up-your-OOTD-instantly piece. And it’s a lot London-inspired and that city was my muse this winter.

What I also love about this style jacket is that I can throw it on over so many of my go-to outfits (read: striped top, jeans, ankle boots) and have it transform my look…just a bit, not too much, not too crazily, but just the right amount. And that, to me, is a winner in a capsule wardrobe, right? One purchase that can give you an update in the right direction. It’s also a great weight for wearing for a large part of the year and it’s light enough to travel with. I think it’s my perfect alternative to the trench coat which often feels too preppy to me. I’ve worn this with both skinny, boyfriend and straight leg jeans and it seems to work with all styles.

Outfit Details

Black Duster – My exact coat is sold out, but I’m loving this one from ASOS with the split hem. It’s also spring-weight. And this other ASOS jacket is super close to the one I have.

Striped Turtleneck – This one is very similar to the one I have and there are a few sizes left. It’s such a great top and layering piece. Or since we’re moving into warmer months, this striped boatneck would be a great alternative.

JeansMadewell Slim Boyjean – This year they have a higher rise version than mine that is spot on and so comfy. They run slightly big. I recently tried my size and the size down and liked the smaller size fit.

ClutchExpress Evil Eye Pouch – This bag is the most fun.

Block Heel BootThis style boot has been my go-to with a cropped straight leg jean. The jean needs to be cropped fairly high, but I find this combo so flattering (and you’ll see it coming up soon with a pair of white jeans).

I’ve gathered a few options here that are great for this transitional time of year when it’s too warm for a heavy coat, but too cool to go without a jacket. If you’re petite like me, I think this jacket style is most flattering when it hits at the knee and I prefer to wear this style with a heeled boot or shoe. If you’re taller, rock the longer dusters just because you can. They’re so rad.

I’m thinking of doing more 5 piece wardrobe updates and I’m excited to take on the challenge again. Stay tuned for what the next installment shapes up to be! Thanks so much for your feedback on this winter wardrobe experiment of mine!

Cheers,

L

  1. I’m super loving this series, Laura! Great job! I would totally dig another 5 piece wardrobe update post. It gives me good inspiration without making me feel like I need a total closet overhaul. Thank you!

  2. Elizabeth Rafter on

This whole series was so good! I love your finds and am excited to see what you have in store for spring/summer!!! Now, I’m off to order the ASOS coat and Expeess bag (because everyone NEEDS an evil eye clutch, of course)!

  3. I enjoy capsule wardrobes. But next time maybe show more variations of each addition to show how it adds versatility, rather than just being a new coat or sweater worn this one way, which is essentially the same as just buying a new item and wearing it, rather than being a capsule. If that makes sense.

    • I will continue to wear the pieces for sure and include them in other posts! Makes total sense. Just won’t be necessarily titled the winter capsule anymore, but yes, thank you for the feedback as I try it again for another season!

  4. Love this entry! I have a very similar jacket, bought about 10 years ago and also inspired by London. Lately though I’ve been thinking it’s dated, maybe a little too long. But this shows how to make it work again, all stripey-shirt and booties. Thank you for the style (re-) inspiration!
