Cozy Neutrals to Transition Your Home to Spring

ugg-throw

The longer days and the way the air smells after a cold spring rain (aiming for a positive spin on current New England weather, how am I doing?) call for opening the windows wide and throwing off the once comforting, now suffocating heavy flannel sheets and velvet throws. I see you, 7 PM sunset, and I’m glad you’re here. Like a lot of us, I was so inspired by A’s ode to decorating with white and the clean, airy images of spring home decor flooding online shops right now. Bring on the light and bright, whether it’s cottony soft, nubby knit, or heavenly sheepskin to warm still chilly morning floors, all in soft, neutral hues to usher in a new season. Here’s what’s tempting me to “refresh my nest” this season.

Colorful Spring Athleisure Picks

zella-pants

As much as I love gray and black, at this point in the year I’m in desperate need for some color. The longer days and patches of grass peeking through are encouragement that there’s a light at the end of the winter tunnel and I’m feeling festive. Since you can find me wearing leggings and a hoodie most days (it’s the perfect outfit for working from home and toddler wrangling!), I guess I’m the designated ‘Sporty Spice’ around here. Good thing, because I had so much fun browsing all the new spring athleisure and putting together fun color combos. Easiest way to add color: start with a pair of wild pants and pick one of the colors for a hoodie, like I did with these bright blue Zella live in leggings (aka party pants) and dusty pink Superdry hoodie. Unexpected and definitely a mood booster! Check out the other yummy new spring colors I found…

Supportive Swimwear for Larger Busts: Our 2017 Picks

large-bust-swimwear

Hey all! We’ve been getting tons of questions from you ladies about swim styles that offer a bit more support up top, especially for larger busts. It can be really disappointing when you love a certain style, only to try it on and feel like the designers forgot about that silly thing called gravity? Or if you’ve nursed a few babes and now find you need more than stretchy fabric to keep things where they should be, we’ve got you covered.

When you’re looking for supportive swim tops, it helps to skim the description for these key words: underwire, hidden or otherwise; side boning (your hubby will probably find that amusing if his sense of humor hasn’t evolved much since junior high, like mine’s); and 3-row 2-column (or some combination) hook & eye closure like regular bras & sports bras have for extra security.

I found so many good choices this year, even more so than in years past. I noticed a happy and inclusive trend this year that stylish and on-trend swim brands are making the same style in regular, larger cup sizes and plus sizes. Yay for finally recognizing bodies come in more sizes than small, medium and large! I grouped swim styles by tankini/bikini and one-pieces, so everyone can find their comfortable level of coverage.

Spring Denim: Destroyed and Embellished Light Wash

paige-verdugo-light

lace top  /  jeans  /  booties

True to my Taurus sign, I’m very much creature of habit – once I find a style of jeans that works on my body and fits well, it’s a no-brainer. And my love affair with Paige Verdugo skinnies is no secret! Though black skinnies will always be the most flattering in my opinion, I wanted to lighten up for spring. Here’s the thing: skinny, light-colored pants on can be tricky if it’s just an expanse of solid color stretching tightly across your thighs and bum, so here were some criteria I had in mind:

  • Something to add interest on the legs – distressing, destruction, embroidery or otherwise embellished
  • Variation in light denim shades within the jeans to make them as flattering as possible
  • Cropped or ankle length but not necessarily petite-sized makes it easier to find more options

It’s true that the Paige’s happened to be my faves, but I found a couple more styles that will definitely be on permanent repeat in my denim collection. (I made that sound way fancier than the crowded shelf at the top of the closet). Want to see which spring denim I loved?

Kids’ Bookcase Organization – Before & After!

kids-bookcase-help

As you can see above, my toddler’s book situation was a lil’ bit out of control. We live in an old house that has small bedrooms, and hers is not only the smallest but also filled with the most furniture. Crib, huge gliding rocking chair, and twin-sized bed – the old Ikea Expedit I’m using as her dresser is wedged into the closet. But reading is a big part of the bedtime routine, so as she began getting more into books (and squirrelling them all away in her room – toddlers are excellent hoarders) I needed a better organizing solution. The shoe rack/makeshift bookcase worked ok for a while, but lately had been a disaster area and way too small to contain much of anything.

Time for a new solution – a real bookcase with lots of space for storage bins, baskets, nightlights and of course, books. We did sacrifice the walking space between the crib and glider to fit one in, but it’s infinitely better. Ready for the big reveal?

Hot Eats & Cool Shops in Portland, Maine

cross-graphic-tray

 Portland Trading Company

A few weeks ago the hubs and I escaped for our first weekend away since kids. Hallelujah! We spent a day exploring Portland, Maine – or as I like to call it, Brooklyn North. There are some seriously cool shops and amazing restaurants packed into this little city, not to mention the quaint cobblestone side streets (incredibly slippery in winter, FYI) and stunning views of Casco Bay. I kept thinking how much the kids would love to visit even though we were supposed to be off-duty! It’s such a unique place. The wharfs in the old, still-working port are fascinating, and there’s a strong arts culture that has fun events year round. For older kids and adults, there’s an incredible music sceneLake Street Dive was in town that weekend for a sold-out show. I was admittedly surprised at how much the city has going on and wished we had more time to explore. Note – it’s not a definitive city guide, just our picks from shops and food we found when wandering around. Think mashed potato donuts (oh, yes), a gorgeous kid’s boutique, Scandinavian heaven and lots more. Let’s go!

Style Challenge: Athleisure to (Casual) Glam

dressy-bomber

Since this week the blog is like one big ‘introduction to the opposites’ sketch, this athleisure queen was tasked with finding my inner glam. Immediately I started trolling Scotti’s posts for inspiration since she’s the resident glamazon around here. (And it’s not just in blog posts. Fun story: the first time I met Scotti in person was at the hotel we were staying at for Shana’s surprise birthday last year. It seriously felt like a celebrity sighting, she is that put together even on weekend morning – gorgeous makeup, hair did, heels. Me, on the other hand? Pretty sure my outfit involved stretchy pants and sneakers, and maybe tinted lip balm if I was feeling extra fancy.) I alternated between panic and avoidance for a week or so, until Shana asked how it was going on our weekly call. I said, quite seriously, “How about glam sweatshirts?” Shana replied, even more seriously, “I think it’s time to make an appointment with a Nordstrom stylist”. Gulp.  Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly of what happened when I did.

Valentine’s Movie Night Ideas – Unromantic + Unfiltered

valentines-day-date-at-home

In our annual tradition of non-romantic-movie themed Valentine’s date nights, I polled the Mom Edit team for their faves and whipped up some really fun ideas if you’re staying in this year. Because it’s February and no one wants to leave the house – hot popcorn & warm couch > fancy dinner & unsensible shoes.

Grab the remote and your bae: we’ll tell you what to watch, wear, drink and give for a low-key but awesome Tuesday night.

A Wool Coat + Sorels Warm Enough for a Blizzard? Yes We Can

sorel-waterproof-winter-boots

Last week we had winter coat + boot combos from coast to coast, now it’s New England’s turn!  Even though the weather is more November than late January here lately, I promise this wool Madewell City Grid coat and tall Sorel Joan of Arctic boots stands up well to blizzard conditions.

I mistakenly thought it would be cool to have my ‘spousetographer’ snap some blog pics in a snowstorm a few weeks ago – as it turns out, I stayed surprisingly warm and toasty no matter how frosty the atmosphere (literally and otherwise). For the sake of marital harmony, I got in touch with a self-professed local ‘momtographer’ this week when it was in the 40s and was still really comfortable. The boots were maybe overkill, but handled the chilly muck beautifully so they’ll be on repeat from October – April around here.

Soooo, only like 5 more months of winter!

Good news though – I found lots of similarly styled coats and Joan of Arctics that are on super sale right now so you still have time to enjoy them this winter.
