A Holiday Gift Guide for the Yoga Goddess

Roughly four years ago, I was knee deep in the darkest period of my life – until I discovered yoga. This lifestyle had its own indescribable way of reaching out and saving me. You might hesitate to take someone so seriously who, admittedly, has once said they ‘literally almost died’ upon seeing a cute sweater. But now, in hindsight, I can confidently say yoga pulled me out of a darkness. The practice guided me into the light and I’ve never looked back. I could go on and on about loving yoga (and if anyone wants to take me up on that, please do) but in the meantime, let’s talk yoga gifts.

AllSaints: 30% Off Everything

Have you guys heard of AllSaints brand? They’re one of my absolute favorites, if I could live in a brand, it would be this one. They’re a bit on the pricey side but the quality is so insanely lux,  and their modern/minimalistic styles are some of the best.  I go to them when I need a wardrobe essential like a knit sweater, a collared button down, or a biker jacket that are interesting…yet will last forever.  OR…when they have a sale.

Amazon: 20% Off Tops, Pants and Jewelry

“Make a little Amazon wishlist,” they said. “It’ll be quick and easy,” they said. Three hours later, my Black Friday wish list was +100 items, and growing! I managed to pare it down a bit and went with three categories that I thought had the MOST good stuff: Tops, Pants and Fashion Jewelry! AND, cause I love ya’ll as much as I love turkey stuffing (so much) each of the three categories were carefully curated so that you can wear any top with any of the pants and any piece of jewelry (with a few exceptions I’m sure).

Jess’ Go-to Holiday Outfit: Velvet + Leather

My favorite place to visit during the Holiday season here in Grand Rapids is the Downtown Market. If you live in West Michigan chances are you’ve already been (and love it) and if you’re just passing through, it’s definitely worth a visit. Home to an expansive 24 vendor market hall that’s packed with inspiring local vendors: artisan foods, wines, gift boutiques, bakeries, clothing and decorated to the tills during the Holiday Season, the Downtown Market never fails to get me into the Holiday spirit. It’s a great place to connect with friends over coffee or a glass of wine,  shop for Holiday gifts AND the perfect opportunity for me to break out my new favorite Holiday outfit.

In past years, my holiday outfits have centered around skirts or dresses (which I love), but since they were such dressy looks, and not very warm to boot, I usually only wore them once over the holiday season. This year’s outfit: a Blank NYC Vegan Pant, velvet cami and slouchy cardigan, is so much more versatile and functional, that I could almost wear them everyday!

Jess’ Take on Cropped Denim: High Waisted, Straight Leg FTW!

Oh happy day! You guys, we’re almost to the end of Crapped (ha! typo but it’s staying) Denim Week here at TME. We learned a lot this week, mainly that a few of you have some REALLY strong feelings about cropped denim. We get it, because we were once skeptical, too.

But I’ve been thinking…we’ve been talking all week long about cropped denim and we’ve never once stopped to acknowledged the style icon who’s bold choice of trousers paved the way for the rest of us and made our cropped denim dreams into reality:

So… if you only take one thing with you from this week, please let it be that Steve Urkel is to thank (or blame).

What To Pack for London: 12 Style Essentials

The British have a saying about their weather, “Four seasons in one day,” and it proved to be more than true on my recent trip to London.  We arrived in the middle of a heat wave – hot and sweaty the first few days – but by the time we left, the weather had turned chilly and rainy. And of course, I had packed mostly for colder, Autumn weather, so a lot of my organized, careful packing went out the window.

The packing list below is a combination of what I wore while I was there, plus a few items I didn’t pack but wish I had.  Hindsight is 20/20, right?  Also, in honor of the high street clothing brands, I’m featuring lots of Topshop, River Island, Warehouse, and Oasis, because sometimes it’s fun to see what affordable fashion looks like on the other side of the pond.

So here’s a packing capsule wardrobe for London – versatile, functional, comfortable and stylish.  (Of course, I packed extra items, but I stripped the list down to the items that I truly relied on.  Next time I’ll pack light.)

Trend Watch from London: Embroidered Denim

I am seriously loving this embroidered denim trend and during a recent trip to London, I saw it everywhere.  Big names like Gucci and Stella McCartney have upgraded their denim staples with floral embroidery and embellishments, and other brands like Citizens of Humanity, Topshop, and River Island have followed suit (with less extravagant and much more affordable versions of this trend).

How to wear it?

BALANCE.  It’s all about balance.  I came to that realization today as I, toddler-like, tried to pair my embroidered denim with other equally colorful, shiny, or unique pieces.  Reality being that I am definitely not a toddler but a 32 year old woman, I quelled my original impulses and paired my floral embroidered jeans with a simple white or black basic tee and neutral colored flats or booties.  No matter how much the toddler in me wants to wear all of the flashy items in my closet at the same time….balance.  (I’m still me, however, so I swapped out the neutral shoes for colorful, blue, lace-up flats).

An Easy (And Cheap) DIY Leather Bolo Necklace

diy bolo necklace1

One of the biggest jewelry trends we can expect to be seeing this year are chokers.  I know, I know – I can feel the collective eye roll that happens at the mere mention of “chokers”.  I mean, we’ve already lived through the 90’s and survived that decade’s questionable style trends with our dignity (mostly) in check.  (Thank GOD there wasn’t social media then – amirght?) But recently, a wise TME reader Deborah reminded me, ” in fashion, all things that once were will be again.”

She’s right.

So, I caved in to the trend and bought a lovely velvet choker I’ve had my eye on, and was surprised by how much I loved it. The downside, however, was that the choker, well…it choked me.  So I started looking for a less claustrophobic option and found my answer in the leather bolo style necklaces by Vanessa Mooney and others (I also like this one). I adore the boho vibe of these necklaces but because I’m cheap and broke I wasn’t ready to part with $50 or more for basically a few yards of leather cord.  So.  Still desperate to have one, I macguivered my own version using leather cord and a few washers.

Here’s how you can make your own adjustable leather bolo happen tonight for less than $5.00!

Teva Sandals: The Summer of my Rekindled Romance

megan's platform tevas

I’ve always had a soft spot for Teva sandals, although admittedly, they aren’t the most stylish footwear.  Functional, durable, sturdy, comfortable – these are shoes made for grand adventures.

I still have the first pair of Tevas I ever owned, worn religiously during a college semester spent backpacking in Yosemite over a decade ago. They were ultimately packed away and passed over in favor of something more stylish and trendy (and less comfortable).  But thanks in part to Teva’s recent design collaborations with the likes of Open Ceremony and one of my favorite designers, Leah Duncan, Teva’s new designs offer fresh takes on an iconic sandal.

My romance with Teva has been rekindled.

So, with the help of my friend, Megan, we highlight our favorite styles and show you how and where we wear them.
