As many of you know, Shana went to Barcelona this summer and had an absolute blast. Although she couldn’t take us with her (wahhh!) she bought me the PERFECT Christmas present while she was there: the coolest ring in the history of rings and an amazing pair of ear cuffs. I’ve been loving their edgy, structural detail – both kid-friendly and cool. Besides, modern silver jewelry + a pretty gray sweater is one of the easiest outfit combos (and can be worn day or night).

One of my favorite things about the Topshop Parka I bought this winter is its versatility . . . as in, that HUGE faux fur hood that I love wearing in the cold wind and snow detaches. Since the jacket itself isn’t a huge puffy down-filled coat this means that I can wear it well into the coming months when the snow is gone. Which brings me to my recent discovery . . . winter sneakers.
I had NO idea they were a thing, really, until I came across these Converse shoes that are literally called “Winter Knit High Top.” Because I live in crazy snow country, it never occurred to me that such a thing existed. And even though I live in Winterville, USA, (or because I live here?) I’m always cold well into March, April . . . and even May sometimes. By then I’m over boots, but my feet get cold so easily. Solution? Winter sneakers. They might be faux fur-lined or waterproof or a sneaker-boot-hybrid and they’re warm, comfortable and seriously cute.
Zack recently broke his leg . . . it was right around the time I got pink eye. (In both eyes. Apparently you’re supposed to treat both eyes . . . learned that the hard way.) Since he recently started his own drywall business, the timing wasn’t exactly ideal. We’ve been trying to make lemonade out of lemons, though . . . and that includes taking advantage of the extra time together, family members willing to babysit and daytime dates. The time has loooong passed when we go out late at night and if it’s 9pm I want to be on my couch thinking of bed. Daytime dates are SO much better. Even if it’s just bowling. Which I hate and am horrible at. Beers help.
Guys, I found the perfect coat. This huge fluffy awesome faux fur hood lining can be removed for a much less dramatic look (for weather that’s warmer than when we took these pictures). For now, I love the oversized hood and warmth of the faux fur…but when it gets warmer I’ll be happy that I have another option that doesn’t involve puffer coats and faux fur.
When you live where I live, you get excited about these things.
Stay tuned for how I style this coat with “winter sneakers,” (yes, that’s a thing) but until then I’m loving it with these Ugg boots (warm, comfy and on sale, which Uggs almost never are) for an effortless cozy winter combo.
During a recent meeting with TME team, Cam (who lives in South Carolina and said it was “cold” because it was below 70) asked when it starts getting warm in Marquette. “May,” I said. I was only half-kidding. We’ve had snow days in May before . . . and although that’s not the norm, we don’t really get a summer going here until about June. Spring (or the season when the snow melts and the sand from sanding the snowy roads over and over again is everywhere – forget flowers here) is pretty much non-existent. You simply cannot live here and NOT have good winter gear. Sorels in the UP are as ubiquitous as the snow banks on the side of the roads.
It’s no surprise that lots of retirees who live here are “snow birds,” or those who go somewhere warm during these winter months. My parents are no exception . . . they’re going to Lake Havasu at the end of the month and Greenlea and I are soaking up as much Nana time as we can before they leave for a few months. She spoils G with candy from Donkers (we were amazed at how fast she ate an entire bag of gummy bears) and has happy hour with me where I chat her ear off. I’m so lucky to have her in the same town . . . and that we get to visit her in Arizona to get out of the cold!
Feeling the winter blahs? Me too. My husband just informed me that the 3rd Monday of January is referred to as “Blue Monday,” and is allegedly the most depressing day of the year. Am I the only one who wants to curl up on the couch and have Netflix marathons on a daily basis?? Must. Resist. Couch. Want to know what my solution is? Sweatshirts. Not just any sweatshirt . . . fancy sweatshirts. Sweatshirts that can go from the couch to the play date to dinner and back again. Sweatshirts that are comfy and cozy but also a little bit of fun. Sequins, ruffles, lace . . . bring on the fancy.
Well people, the snow is here. You’ll probably be seeing me in a lot of boot/winter coat combinations in the next few
weeks months, if I know Marquette. Lately I’ve been wearing this outfit on repeat. Ever since having Greenlea, I go from hot to cold and back again at the drop of a hat. Layers are key. A graphic t/oversized cardigan combo is perfect to throw on over jeans, leggings (and pj’s, if I’m being totally honest). I’m always looking for t-shirts that drape well and aren’t too tight in the belly area . . . and if they say something funny (especially in sequins!) it’s a bonus!
In the spirit of Shana’s 2017 Style Resolutions, and finding “three perfect everyday outfits, per season,” I’d definitely call this look one of my go-to’s. Think simple, comfortable and a little unexpected (bar hopping optional…but encouraged):
Christmas day was awesome. The gifts are all opened, the tree is still up (probably until sometime in January, ha!), G is still wearing her Christmas pjs and we’ve taken the day to relax and refresh after all the fun and excitement of the last few days.
Traditionally, mom & I go shopping the day after Christmas but this year . . . I have pink eye. For the second time. In a week. Yessss. SO. Instead of shopping around town like we usually do, I’ve been checking out all of the fun after-Christmas sales online and, luckily for me, there’s sooo many good ones.
I’m hoping this damn pink eye clears up soon because . . . we have New Year’s plans! In the meantime, I’ve been throwing away eye makeup and using my drops religiously. Grr.
I loved doing this shoot because Peter White Library is one of my favorite places in Marquette. I’m a huge reader and love picking out new books for myself and for G. (I’m one of those dorks who likes the smell of library books . . . please tell me I’m not alone!) I’ve been reading some amazing books lately and really wanted to share them with you guys. I would love some recommendations from you!
I’ve never been one to shy away from cheesy things like matching onesies or a homemade Christmas photobooth frame. I mean, if there’s EVER a time to be cheese it up, it’s Christmas, am I right?? I pretty much adore any occasion that lets me embrace my inner cheeseball and, lucky for me, my husband
begrudgingly goes along is usually game (I mean, within reason – he probably wouldn’t be caught dead in this onesie, but if any of YOU guys can get your hubby to wear it WE WANT PICTURES).
Depending on how much you want to commit to the cheesy matching family look, you could go all out with these matching Santa suit PJ’s for the family. But. If you’d rather dip your toe into the Christmas pj theme without going for the full-on matching Santa suits, then I’ve got you covered. (Not everyone looks thrilled in that photo, do they??)
