This Might Be The Only Dress You Need

What if I said that one of the most versatile pieces in my closet was a dress covered in giant, embroidered flowers, and made from a material that reminds one of tapestry?

I know, I know.  You clutch your pearls (ironically of course), and laugh, because OBVIOUSLY I’VE LOST MY MIND.

But here’s the thing:  when it’s time to be….festive….or dressed up….or when it’s time to slip out of our everyday uniform of slept-in sweaters, dirty jeans and well-worn sneakers (please tell me this isn’t just me)….it’s always fun to wear something that makes an impact.  Something that provides a sharp contrast to the everyday, something fun and sexy and different.

And patterned dresses provide the punch I’m looking for.  Not only that, because they’re Bringing The Fun, they pair easily with classic standbys:  black boots, leather jackets, your old faithful wool coat, etc.

Even better?  There’s something about a patterned dress – at least a gorgeous, richly patterned one – that looks just as good with fur and heels as it does with denim jackets and boots.  Dress it up, dress it down – it’s all pretty effortless.

Keep reading to see how I recently styled my patterned shift dress for a wedding weekend.  I wore it first to the wedding itself…..and then to the horse races the next day, with denim and boots and turtlenecks (of course, if you follow me on IG, @shanachristine,  this is old news).

Lastly, I’ve also included a HUGE round-up of my favorite richly patterned dresses (at many different price points).

Shana’s Go-To Holiday Outfit

Happy holidays!  We’re a little early here, but with Thanksgiving right around the corner…we’re going with close enough.    So let’s kick things off with a week of Go-To Holiday Style.

It’s easy to get caught up in style possibilities around the holidays – the pretty dresses, the gorgeous shoes, the shimmery little tanks – holiday dressing is often part fantasy.  All that shine and sparkle.  But when it comes down to it….most of us won’t be donning sweeping gowns or sequin-encrusted mini dresses for our holiday soirees.  So we wanted to start with what we’re really going to be wearing for the holidays.   Each day this week, one of the TME editors will cover their tried-and-true, Honestly Yes I Will Be Wearing This, Go-To holiday outfit.

Here’s mine.

Trend Watch from London: Embroidered Denim

I am seriously loving this embroidered denim trend and during a recent trip to London, I saw it everywhere.  Big names like Gucci and Stella McCartney have upgraded their denim staples with floral embroidery and embellishments, and other brands like Citizens of Humanity, Topshop, and River Island have followed suit (with less extravagant and much more affordable versions of this trend).

How to wear it?

BALANCE.  It’s all about balance.  I came to that realization today as I, toddler-like, tried to pair my embroidered denim with other equally colorful, shiny, or unique pieces.  Reality being that I am definitely not a toddler but a 32 year old woman, I quelled my original impulses and paired my floral embroidered jeans with a simple white or black basic tee and neutral colored flats or booties.  No matter how much the toddler in me wants to wear all of the flashy items in my closet at the same time….balance.  (I’m still me, however, so I swapped out the neutral shoes for colorful, blue, lace-up flats).

Sleeves, Please: The Best Short-Sleeve Tops and Dresses

Short sleeved summer dresses and tops: you asked, we answered. Cam and I each put together a kick-ass short sleeved top summer outfit and rounded up a big ole list of our favorite short sleeved summer dresses and tops out there this summer….cam's summer top pick

top: OBEY Button-down Shirt – nursing-friendly(!), easy, simple, awesome short-sleeve top for Summer. I love it. Now, it wasn’t almost sold-out 5 sec. ago, but now that I’ve put it in a post, of course,…there’s only a couple of sizes left. le sigh. I  did find this BP. Short-sleeve Shirt and this Halogen Cuffed Cap Sleeve Button-down.

shades: BP. Round Sunglasses – I like to buy cheap, cool sunglasses…because I’m cheap. ha ha. I really just don’t need high end ones right now, with little kids…and losing them constantly and then dropping them every day. A solid few pairs of cheap sunglasses do it for me. Plus- then I can have a few different styles to play with. Nordstrom has BP., which is a very trendy line…and affordable.

shoes: Converse Jack Purcell Lo Top Sneakers – ugh…not again. Really? Sold-out. Can’t find anywhere now. Nooooo. I think they were actually men’s shoes, but whatever. I would have totally still worn them. Why does this keep happening to me? Okay, WELL THEN. Really, I’d wear any pair of canvas shoes with a top like this, because canvas shoes are one of my go-tos in the Summertime and they would help to dress down the collared shirt a bit. So…I just found Converse’s Dainty Ox Sneakers. Cute!…and they come in a bunch of fun Summer colors.

shorts: STS Blue Boyfriend Shorts – these shorts look so good. #word Longer, comfy…and cool. The sizing is a little different, so pay attention to that.

bag: Rebecca Minkoff ‘Medium Julian’ Backpack – because it’s beautiful and if you’ve been wanting to spend a little mas on THE bag…buy this bag. This is the kind of thing that just won’t ever go out of style…in MY opinion. 😉

Fall Art and Style Inspiration (yes, pumpkins are involved)

You guys might remember Jess (aka Jessbobess) who has contributed some seriously cool art to TME.  I featured her back in August, and long time readers may remember this epic post.  But one thing you may not have realized is that Jess is funny – with a good eye and a keen wit.  So this month, instead of my usual blathering on, I thought I’d let Jess do the talking.  -S

Hey guys! Jess here, I’m not going to lie- I’ve been nervous about this post for The Mom Edit,  following in the steps of Shana and her team of style experts is a bit daunting to say the least, but here goes nothing….

I’m a 31 year old aspiring artist and designer, certified elementary art teacher, crafter/DIYer, book nerd, sometimes barista, and lover of fashion since the day I was old enough to dress myself. My style icons include:

1) My tiny Texan grandma with a larger than life personality and walk-in closet filled with clothing items one can only expect from a fashion forward 60 year old Texas grandma: bold, colorful sequined, dresses, gaudy, faux gemstone jewelry and mounds of high heels…

my grandma, with my equally stylish brother and me (yes it’s a perm, and no I don’t want to talk about that phase of my life)

How To Pull Off Pencil Skirts and Flats (Even For Petites)

We had a blast at the World War Two Weekend in Reading, PA this past weekend.  (For more deets on the event, see my full coverage here.  It’s pretty amazing.)  But dressing for the weekend is always a challenge:  it’s hot, it’s sunny, I’m on my feet all day, and then at night…..there’s a swing band and dance party.  To make matters worse, most of the other attendees arrive in full 1940’s costume.  Every year they look GORGEOUS and glamorous, and that level of dedication truly makes the weekend feel like stepping back in time.

So. I wanted to wear something comfortable, but something that could hang with all of the pin-up girl glamour (although a few women came dressed as Rosie the Riveter which was awesome).  Inspired by Cam “grunging” her pencil skirt (bless her preppy little heart), I used Cam’s grunge to make mine…glam?

But here’s the thing:  Cams is tall. I am not.

Winter Florals And Leather Jackets (The Anti-Valentine Valentine’s Day Outfit)

I’m totally feeling winter florals right now.  They’re kinda dark, edgy…..the type of print that looks perfect with smudgy black eyeliner and leather.  I asked my very talented friend Jessbobess to come up with a little something to inspire us…..

(illustrations by the insanely talented jessbobess

Whoa.  Jess, those are some seriously inspiring designs.

In that vein, I tried to come up with a little something-something.  Don’t get excited – it’s not nearly as good as what Jess came up with (but a dramatic skirt is fun nonetheless).

Shopping: Overalls + Kimonos

Remember when you first learned you were pregnant?  That very first time?  I remember desperately trying to keep it a secret from friends/family/coworkers/Facebook, but everywhere I looked….BABIES.  Babies were everywhere.  It was a plot, executed by the universe, to wear my husband down until he finally cracked, at a party attended by both friends and co-workers, his excited voice booming over the music, “SHANA IS PREGNANT!!  BUT ONLY THREE WEEKS SO DON’T TELL HER THAT YOU KNOW!!!!!!!!”

Nice one, Mike.  Imagine my surprise as I fake-drank my beer to have 30 people suddenly rush up and congratulate me.  If I recall correctly, I started actually drinking the beer.

In any case, I’ve had overalls on the brain.  Overalls and kimonos, specifically.  And, like babies, they are suddenly popping up everywhere.  So let’s take this as a universal sign TO GO SHOPPING.

1. For the Rock Chick

Love the edgy railroad stripes with a floral kimono.  It’s a seriously cool mixed-print combo.

Forever 21 Railroad Stripe Overalls, on sale for $20

SheInside Rose Red Vintage Floral Kimono, $18

2. For the Casual Boho Mom

Achieves that whole, “this old thing?” nonchalance.

Blank Denim Overalls, $108

SheInside White Short Sleeve Vintage Floral Kimono, $17

3.  For the Romantic Tomboy

It’s hard to beat lace and soft chambray.  These have gotta be the comfiest overalls of the bunch.

Madewell Park Overalls in Skyview, $148

Lace Cardigan, $38 at Nordstrom

4. For the Urban Mama

Tribal prints and Faux-leather?  Yes, please.

Current/Elliot Ranch Hand Coated Overalls, $348 at Nordstrom

Apricot Tribal Print Kimono, $23 at SheInside

5. For Moms Who Seek Cozy-Chic

I have these overalls – they’re the exact same pair I featured in the Nordstrom Anniversary sale #dressingroomselfies.  Even at full-price, they’re a steal for $54.  Love them with a cozy knit kimono.  So cute on a cool fall day with ankle boots, scarf and a knit hat.  Right?

Fire Destroyed Slim Overalls, $54

Batwing Sleeve Loose Knit Top, $21 at SheInside

Happy Monday!
