His & Hers: White Jeans – How To Wear Them Now

couple-style-white-jeans
White jeans, peeps.  Not just for Mama anymore.

I’ll admit, Mike was skeptical.  As I was I, to be honest!  But we had a white party to attend back in April, so I figured white jeans was the least-painful of Mike’s outfit choices.  What neither of us expected, however, was that they would become one of Mike’s favorites.

Unlike white jeans on girls, a guy in white jeans doesn’t read instantly preppy.  There’s something….almost iconically cool about a guy in a well-fitting pair of white jeans and a tshirt.

Keep on reading for our fail-safe method of wearing white jeans (his), and a new-ish outfit formula I’m currently loving (hers).

A Spring Jacket For Guys That’s Both Legit and Laid-Back

baracuta-jacket

Have you heard of Baracuta’s G9 Harrington Jacket?  It was originally created in London in 1937, by a man who Winston Churchill once referred to as “the most mild-mannered man that ever scuttled ships or cut a mans throat.”

The jacket was designed to be short, slim and flatter all body types…and the G9 (the original style), hasn’t been altered since 1937.  In fact, it’s still being made in Britain.

Talk about timeless style.

The G9 has major street cred, too.  It’s been worn by James Dean, Frank Sinatra, The Clash, James Bond, and Steve McQueen, just to name a few.  It’s both badass and laid back.

(If you follow me on Instagram (@shanachristine), you already know we’re spoofing the 1968 version of The Thomas Crown Affair.  It seemed appropriate since Mr. McQueen rocks one of these jackets in the film.)

The Coolest Rain Boots: For Moms, Dads, and Kids

rainboots_main

It’s the rain boot post! Get excited. Or try to. It’s been raining non-stop here lately and yes, it usually does, but I feel like it’s been extra rainy and gray. We got the teeniest bit of sunshine yesterday…and here’s Sienna “making a mask because it’s too bright.” #nativeportlander

Gifts For The Hardworking Guy In Your Life

Gift Guide for Men

My husband Zack is probably the hardest-working person I know.  He comes home daily full of mud, paint and drywall dust, showers, and then cooks and/or cleans, reads to Greenlea and rocks her to sleep.*  He wakes up every morning to do it all over again – including many weekends.  He’s also the most fashionable man I know.  He has his own sense of style and isn’t afraid to push the boundaries a little.  When he’s not working, he likes to look good and wear clothes that aren’t covered in paint.  (Think Ryan Gosling’s clothes in “Crazy Stupid Love.”)  Lucky for Zack, I love giving gifts and finding the perfect one for him is my way of saying “thank you sooooo much for all of your hard work . . . we love and appreciate you!”  I often get too excited and give him gifts ahead of time . . . because I just can’t handle waiting.  Here are the gift ideas I’m eyeing up for him this year . . .

1. Swell Water Bottle: These bottles are amazing.  They keep liquids hot or cold for hours and come in a ton of cool colors and patterns.

2. ‘You are a good dad’ mug: Just for a daily reminder and thank you.

3. Canada Goose Down Jacket: This is like the Holy Grail of down jackets.

4. Wood Watch: A ‘manly’ watch in wood grain.

5. Antler Bottle Opener: Such a unique and cool-looking opener.

6. Longline Cardigan: These longer-length cardigans are awesome.  ASOS has ones that are reasonably priced and are a reasonable length (I’ve seen some crazy long ones in my search for the perfect longer cardigan).

7. Clinique for Men Sonic System Deep Cleansing Brush & Face Scrub: A specialized brush for men for a deeper clean and the perfect shave prep . . . and Zack’s favorite face scrub for men.  (I should say the only skin-care product he consistently uses . . . )

8. ‘Best Sweats Ever:‘ Zack wouldn’t stop talking about these after he tried them on . . . the perfectly comfortable sweats to put on after a long day of work.

9. Black Leather Hi-tops: A kind of hybrid of Converse and dress shoe . . . sturdier than a sneaker and more comfortable than an Oxford.

10. Ray-Ban Sunglasses: An updated shape of the iconic shades.

11. Wood-Grain iPhone Case: The wood-grain is obviously a theme here . . . it just looks so cool.

12. Beach Cooler: We always find ourselves in need of a way to keep our drinks cold . . . whether we’re going to the beach, on a bike ride or to our niece’s soccer game.  This one would hold everything we need and is so much more convenient than a typical cooler.

13. Sorel Boots: Sorels are just a necessity where we live . . . warm, waterproof and stylish without being overly clunky and huge. (And they last forever!)

14. Anchor Bracelet: Love the idea of the anchor being a symbol of marriage . . . and this bracelet is a great way to “dip his toe” into the jewelry idea.  (OMG did I just use that phrase??)

15. Bloxx Ice Tray: Bigger, more sophisticated ice cubes to pour scotch over.  (Or tequila, in our case.  Drinking tequila becomes so much more sophisticated with these ice cubes . . . right??).

*Ok, just for the record, he doesn’t always cook, clean and rock her to sleep.   I do help.  🙂

XOXO,

Scotti

Our Favorite Suits For Guys

best-suits-for-guys

Several of you have been asking about Mike’s work attire – suits and such.  His job currently requires him to wear a suit most days, so over the last couple of years, he’s really been able to hone in on his favorites.

And in case anyone was wondering where Raines get his intense little stare from….good grief.

Anyway, Mike has go-to suits at every price point:  expensive, middle-of-the-road, and cheap.  He mostly wears his expensive suits – they also can take a beating without losing their shape, but he uses lower-cost suits to round out his wardrobe, or try out a new look without committing big bucks.  Here are his favorites:

What To Get Your Guy This Holiday (Mike Picks His Favs)

gift-ideas-for-dads

I’ve mentioned before about how tough it is to buy gifts for Mike, or husbands in general.  Scotti scored big with a cat shirt for her husband last year (haha NO), and Mike always tells me to look at his Amazon wish list.  Which I would, if it wasn’t also the exact thing I read to put myself to sleep at night. “Introduction to Semi-Supervised Learning (Synthesis Lectures on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Le….”  Zzzzz

Those titles, man.  Come ON.

Thankfully, Nordstrom has changed the guy-gifting game with a newly expanded gift shop for men.  In addition to the usual go-tos – jeans, sweaters, cologne, an insane shoe selection – they also have a newly expanded tech gifts section, really good man-bags, cool, masculine jewelry, and alllll the things Mikey likes.

Chic North Face Jackets For Guys and Gals

north-face-parka-with-faux-fur

There’s been a ton of chatter about winter coats lately – warm, cozy and fabulously chic winter coats, of course, so I’m thrilled to share my (our) latest finds.  I finally broke down and bought a long, Chicago-style puffer coat (words cannot express how much I hate to be cold), and Mike?  Well.  We finally found a winter coat (a Majorly Warm Winter Coat) that looks amazing over his suits.

And because The North Face is killing it right now, I also found an insulated raincoat I’ve been wearing nonstop to school drop-off (it’s such a pretty color – you may have already seen it on my instagram feed, @shanachristine)….and also what Mike and I learned about his lightweight down jackets and SIZING.

Let’s do this.

Guy Style: Two Easy Ways To Wear Black Jeans

how-to-wear-black-jeans-for-guys

For a while, I thought black jeans could only be rocked by guys who were under 130 lbs, smoked, or had a band.  At least two of the three had to be true.  As it turns out, the right pair of black jeans – barely faded and slim cut, IMHO – are surprisingly easy to wear, even if your guy is more preppy than hipster.  (My guy is right in the middle.)  Best of all?  These outfits work for weekends with the kiddos and a low key date night.

Father’s Day Gift Guide – What To Get Dads and Grandads

fathers-day-gift-guide

Hey!  Father’s Day is coming!!  Did you forget?  (Me too.)

Our poor guys.  Father’s Day never seems to garner the same….ceremony as Mother’s Day, you know?  It’s slightly overshadowed by the end-of-school hoopla, and most guys seem content to celebrate with mind-numbingly boring presents like a bag of golf balls or something.  Gack.

But we can do better!  And it doesn’t need to be hard – in fact, we’re dying over Nordstrom’s selection of Father’s Day gifts, and that free shipping / free return shipping can’t be beat.  (I mean seriously – the return sticker comes in the packaging all ready to go.  Pop it on the box and the mailman will take it away….)

So here’s a few gift ideas for the men in your life.  Whether he’s the superhero of swaddle, skateboard, or the old-men’s horseshoe tournament….we’ve got his gift.

Gifts For the Young Dad

For this gift guide, I turned to Scotti and her husband Zack.  (The Robin reference, however, is all me mwah ha ha ha…)

Gift Guide: For That Sexy (And Nerdy) Guy You Married

giftguide-men-sexygeek-01

1. Soul Socks Sock-of-the-Month Club, $12 per month or $132 per year

This is what I got Mike for Christmas last year.  He opened it and was all, “Cool, Babe” than later made fun of me “I can’t believe you got me SOCKS for Christmas”.  But then the socks started arriving.  And?  They’re awesome.   Pretty soon Mike would come home from work and ask, “Did my new socks come in yet?”  He’s already started dropping hints for this year….wait and see, Mike D.  Wait And See.

2. Vince Leather Moto Jacket, $995

Mike got a leather jacket last year and it completely changed his style game.  He wears it on date nights, he wears it to soccer games, he even wears it to work (looks great with a tie).  We liked the Vince jacket the best (now sold out), but this year’s Vince leather jacket looks just as good (buttery soft leather, great tailoring) or try the Cafe Racer from Schott NYC.

3. J.Crew The Un-Sweatpant Sweatpant, $85

What guy spends $85 on sweatpants?  None of them. Which is why this is a gift.  But I freaking love these sweatpants.  Mike looks so adorably sexy with his glasses and bedhead and cool-guy sweatpants that they are worth every penny.  (Of course, Mike’s sweats are sold out, but J.Crew’s classic slim are similar, or try American Apparel’s Ottoman Jogger.

4. Shinola The Runwell Chrono Leather Strap Watch, $750

Shinola watches are made in Detroit (holla), and even if we didn’t hail from MI, we’d be all over these seriously cool watches.  We both love the vintage faces with such modern styling.  Namely, the watch is big.  Be sure to check out pictures of the watch on the model’s hand to get an idea of scale.  So freaking cool.
