Our Favorite Suits For Active Guys

When Mike and I first started working, it was during the dot-com boom, and dress codes everywhere were loosening up.  Everyone – even corporate Lockheed Martin – was trying to emulate the cool, Silicon Valley start-up vibe, and most of us (the young engineers, anyway) all wore jeans.  My typical work uniform was jeans, stilettos, an oversized, un-tucked button-down…topped with a ponytail, haha.

Predictably, this didn’t last.  Not only have corporate dress codes smartened up in the past few years, but on a personal level, Mike changed jobs and now wears a full suit – and tie – everyday.

Creating a suit wardrobe from a closet full of jeans and bad khakis has been, uh, challenging.  Our favorite places to shop for men’s suits is Nordstroms, and the anniversary sale (which starts THURSDAY WOOT WOOT) is – hands down – the very best time to shop for suits.

Mike’s fav?  Hugo Boss.  They’re expensive, but these things last.  Mike is a suit power-user:  he travels in them, skateboards to work in them, tosses them on the floor of our bedroom, couldn’t find an iron with both hands and a map, and has, on occasion, thrown the jacket over a nail to “hang” it.

Drives me nuts.

All things considered….these suits hold up pretty well.

Summer Shoes For Guys (Picked By Guys)

If there’s one thing I can’t buy for Mike, it’s shoes.  I can usually nail the shirt-and-tie combo, suits are a no brainer (blue Hugo Boss all day long), and even with jeans and tees I have a success rate of over 50%.  But shoes?  Not even close.  The man is super picky about shoes.  And so is Scotti’s husband, Zack.  And, now that I think about it….so is my Dad.  Is this a man thing?

In any case, when Nordstrom asked me to take a look at their selection of guys’ shoes (which, btw, is starting to rival their women’s selection), I turned the whole thing over to Mike and Zack, instructing them to pick shoes they would actually wear this summer.

True to form, their picks surprised me.  So.  From our guys to yours, here are our favorite summer man shoes.

Father’s Day Gift Guide (For Dads and Grandpas)

Dads:  carrying exhausted babies and fixing boo-boos since, well….forever.

Yay to the hairy men, the smelly guys, the giant (in comparison) shoes in the hallway, the underwear that never makes into the basket, and the proverbial toilet seat.  Up or down, we love the the way your man-hands are so gentle with your children, and how you play in a way that is also slightly terrifying to watch.  You have the best roar, super-hero-like powers, and are clutch in the middle of the night when we just CAN’T.

A good Dad, a true partner-in-crime in this crazy game of child raising, is an infinitely lucky find.  And if you’ve got one (whether we’re talking about an amazing husband or your own supportive Dad), on Father’s Day they’ll probably be content with some appreciative words and a beer.  (Well, technically speaking, husbands want something else, too.)  But if you are in the mood to spoil the most important guy in your life, keep reading.  The Mom Edit team has spent the last week or so poking and prodding our guys to reveal a few gifts that they would actually appreciate.

Keep reading for a few gift ideas not just for hubs, but for your Dad as well.

Happy Father’s Day!!!

His & Hers: White Jeans – How To Wear Them Now

White jeans, peeps.  Not just for Mama anymore.

I’ll admit, Mike was skeptical.  As I was I, to be honest!  But we had a white party to attend back in April, so I figured white jeans was the least-painful of Mike’s outfit choices.  What neither of us expected, however, was that they would become one of Mike’s favorites.

Unlike white jeans on girls, a guy in white jeans doesn’t read instantly preppy.  There’s something….almost iconically cool about a guy in a well-fitting pair of white jeans and a tshirt.

Keep on reading for our fail-safe method of wearing white jeans (his), and a new-ish outfit formula I’m currently loving (hers).

A Spring Jacket For Guys That’s Both Legit and Laid-Back

Have you heard of Baracuta’s G9 Harrington Jacket?  It was originally created in London in 1937, by a man who Winston Churchill once referred to as “the most mild-mannered man that ever scuttled ships or cut a mans throat.”

The jacket was designed to be short, slim and flatter all body types…and the G9 (the original style), hasn’t been altered since 1937.  In fact, it’s still being made in Britain.

Talk about timeless style.

The G9 has major street cred, too.  It’s been worn by James Dean, Frank Sinatra, The Clash, James Bond, and Steve McQueen, just to name a few.  It’s both badass and laid back.

(If you follow me on Instagram (@shanachristine), you already know we’re spoofing the 1968 version of The Thomas Crown Affair.  It seemed appropriate since Mr. McQueen rocks one of these jackets in the film.)

The Coolest Rain Boots: For Moms, Dads, and Kids

It’s the rain boot post! Get excited. Or try to. It’s been raining non-stop here lately and yes, it usually does, but I feel like it’s been extra rainy and gray. We got the teeniest bit of sunshine yesterday…and here’s Sienna “making a mask because it’s too bright.” #nativeportlander

sweatshirt (very similar and cuter!) | tutu| boots (similar and these on the wishlist!)

A Gift Guide with a Northwest Vibe

The Pacific Northwest is arguably the most beautiful part of the country…if you like evergreens and rain and mountains and I DO. We are definitely deficient in Vitamin D, but beyond that we aim for healthy lifestyles and friendly vibes out here. It’s all about getting into the outdoors and exploring and ignoring the rain. Oh, and coffee, of course. If you and/or the people on your list are into the Northwest vibe…

For Women

I could have listed a million things, but these are some of my favorites right now.

For Men

I really wish I could get my husband to wear that vest. So. Good.

For Kids

Ok, so I may have gone a bit overboard on the plaid here, but pretty much kids in plaid is one of my favorite things. And that denim vest. UGH! I want one so badly for myself.

For Home

Gonna try to convince Pinky that that tree mural is a good stocking stuffer.

Happy Cozy Holidays! And don’t worry fellow Upper Left Coasters, a raincoat roundup is on the to-do list!

P.S. Don’t forget to check out all of our Gift Guides. If you’ve waited ’til the last minute (speaking to myself) we’ve got you covered!

Gifts For The Hardworking Guy In Your Life

Gift Guide for Men

My husband Zack is probably the hardest-working person I know.  He comes home daily full of mud, paint and drywall dust, showers, and then cooks and/or cleans, reads to Greenlea and rocks her to sleep.*  He wakes up every morning to do it all over again – including many weekends.  He’s also the most fashionable man I know.  He has his own sense of style and isn’t afraid to push the boundaries a little.  When he’s not working, he likes to look good and wear clothes that aren’t covered in paint.  (Think Ryan Gosling’s clothes in “Crazy Stupid Love.”)  Lucky for Zack, I love giving gifts and finding the perfect one for him is my way of saying “thank you sooooo much for all of your hard work . . . we love and appreciate you!”  I often get too excited and give him gifts ahead of time . . . because I just can’t handle waiting.  Here are the gift ideas I’m eyeing up for him this year . . .

1. Swell Water Bottle: These bottles are amazing.  They keep liquids hot or cold for hours and come in a ton of cool colors and patterns.

2. ‘You are a good dad’ mug: Just for a daily reminder and thank you.

3. Canada Goose Down Jacket: This is like the Holy Grail of down jackets.

4. Wood Watch: A ‘manly’ watch in wood grain.

5. Antler Bottle Opener: Such a unique and cool-looking opener.

6. Longline Cardigan: These longer-length cardigans are awesome.  ASOS has ones that are reasonably priced and are a reasonable length (I’ve seen some crazy long ones in my search for the perfect longer cardigan).

7. Clinique for Men Sonic System Deep Cleansing Brush & Face Scrub: A specialized brush for men for a deeper clean and the perfect shave prep . . . and Zack’s favorite face scrub for men.  (I should say the only skin-care product he consistently uses . . . )

8. ‘Best Sweats Ever:‘ Zack wouldn’t stop talking about these after he tried them on . . . the perfectly comfortable sweats to put on after a long day of work.

9. Black Leather Hi-tops: A kind of hybrid of Converse and dress shoe . . . sturdier than a sneaker and more comfortable than an Oxford.

10. Ray-Ban Sunglasses: An updated shape of the iconic shades.

11. Wood-Grain iPhone Case: The wood-grain is obviously a theme here . . . it just looks so cool.

12. Beach Cooler: We always find ourselves in need of a way to keep our drinks cold . . . whether we’re going to the beach, on a bike ride or to our niece’s soccer game.  This one would hold everything we need and is so much more convenient than a typical cooler.

13. Sorel Boots: Sorels are just a necessity where we live . . . warm, waterproof and stylish without being overly clunky and huge. (And they last forever!)

14. Anchor Bracelet: Love the idea of the anchor being a symbol of marriage . . . and this bracelet is a great way to “dip his toe” into the jewelry idea.  (OMG did I just use that phrase??)

15. Bloxx Ice Tray: Bigger, more sophisticated ice cubes to pour scotch over.  (Or tequila, in our case.  Drinking tequila becomes so much more sophisticated with these ice cubes . . . right??).

*Ok, just for the record, he doesn’t always cook, clean and rock her to sleep.   I do help.  🙂

Our Favorite Suits For Guys

Several of you have been asking about Mike’s work attire – suits and such.  His job currently requires him to wear a suit most days, so over the last couple of years, he’s really been able to hone in on his favorites.

And in case anyone was wondering where Raines get his intense little stare from….good grief.

Anyway, Mike has go-to suits at every price point:  expensive, middle-of-the-road, and cheap.  He mostly wears his expensive suits – they also can take a beating without losing their shape, but he uses lower-cost suits to round out his wardrobe, or try out a new look without committing big bucks.  Here are his favorites:

What To Get Your Guy This Holiday (Mike Picks His Favs)

I’ve mentioned before about how tough it is to buy gifts for Mike, or husbands in general.  Scotti scored big with a cat shirt for her husband last year (haha NO), and Mike always tells me to look at his Amazon wish list.  Which I would, if it wasn’t also the exact thing I read to put myself to sleep at night. “Introduction to Semi-Supervised Learning (Synthesis Lectures on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Le….”  Zzzzz

Those titles, man.  Come ON.

Thankfully, Nordstrom has changed the guy-gifting game with a newly expanded gift shop for men.  In addition to the usual go-tos – jeans, sweaters, cologne, an insane shoe selection – they also have a newly expanded tech gifts section, really good man-bags, cool, masculine jewelry, and alllll the things Mikey likes.
