An Easy Spring Outfit and An Everyday Adventure

I have a poster framed in our guest room that reads “I do believe it’s time for another adventure.” I crave exploring, travel and finding new places. I’m always amazed when I find out about an incredible new spot right here at home.

How did I not know about this epic location here in Portland? Gorgeous, right? It’s called Rocky Butte and it was the site of a little day adventure for me. Yes, a rainy day adventure, but fortunately the downpours held off while I looked around and snapped a few pictures and took a minute to myself to clear my head.

I want to be a laid-back person, a laid-back mom. I really do. I’m not overly emotional most of the time and I approach a lot of life in a pretty matter-of-fact way, but I’m a perfectionist and a serial do-er. Idle hands and all, I guess. I have a frantic need to check off that to-do list everyday.  And I have a bad habit of making myself feel guilty if I don’t get through that list. I mistakenly think because I enjoy my work or because I’m not going 100mph every second of the day that I don’t need to set aside time to myself. It’s so hard not to listen to those voices all the time, right?

But, on this morning, I ventured out, ignored those voices and that to-do list and just enjoyed a spectacular view of the city I love. Yes, I’ll bring Sienna here sometime, but this day was just for me…

The Boxy Button Down

top (similar) | jeans | boots

Raise your hand if you hate gaping button down tops? So annoying, right?

I love a good button down top, especially buttoned all the way up (like my bestie Nicole taught me). But. I have a wide rib cage. I know, the struggle, but seriously. I couldn’t wear all those cute(?) empire waist prom dresses in high school either and I’ve dealt with the dang button gape in button up shirts since.

Button down? Button up? I don’t know the proper term, but I’ve found a version of the shirts that work for me, are comfy and are everywhere right now. Yay! Shall we…

Favorite Way to Style Hi Tops: Think Jackets

img_9441

Ok friends. You know I love hi tops about as much as I love overalls. I also know they’re not for everyone, but I think that reason is just because they are a little tricky to style, right? Maybe I love a good fashion challenge so I gravitate towards things I have to really work at to figure out. I don’t know!

What I do know is that I like that hi tops are a bit more unique and a bit tougher than regular sneakers. But I do, however, love them for their comfort. I can keep them on all day long (walking around AND running after Sienna). A few readers have asked about styling hi tops lately. Here’s what I’ve found…

Colorful Spring Athleisure Picks

zella-pants

As much as I love gray and black, at this point in the year I’m in desperate need for some color. The longer days and patches of grass peeking through are encouragement that there’s a light at the end of the winter tunnel and I’m feeling festive. Since you can find me wearing leggings and a hoodie most days (it’s the perfect outfit for working from home and toddler wrangling!), I guess I’m the designated ‘Sporty Spice’ around here. Good thing, because I had so much fun browsing all the new spring athleisure and putting together fun color combos. Easiest way to add color: start with a pair of wild pants and pick one of the colors for a hoodie, like I did with these bright blue Zella live in leggings (aka party pants) and dusty pink Superdry hoodie. Unexpected and definitely a mood booster! Check out the other yummy new spring colors I found…

Orange Crush: 2017 Spring Color Trend

Citrus fruits, traffic cones, pumpkin patches, Donald Trump’s skin tone –  just a few of the things that come to mind when I think about orange. “Fashion’s IT Color” or “Season’s Hottest Trend,” on the other hand are phrases I’m pretty sure no one has used since the ’70s in reference to orange, well until now.

Yup, orange is back and baby.. it’s come a long way since Woodstock.

Varying hues of orange dominated the runway during NYFW this year. From electric neon oranges to soft creamsicle pastels, from fiery sunset pallet of red oranges to warm cinnamon earth tone neutrals, and every shade of orange in between. Orange has never looked so appealing and wearable.

Still not sold?

I feel ya. I was the biggest orange non-believer of them all until a chance encounter with a rust cami in an Anthro fitting room turned my least favorite color into a complete wardrobe staple.

Supportive Swimwear for Larger Busts: Our 2017 Picks

large-bust-swimwear

Hey all! We’ve been getting tons of questions from you ladies about swim styles that offer a bit more support up top, especially for larger busts. It can be really disappointing when you love a certain style, only to try it on and feel like the designers forgot about that silly thing called gravity? Or if you’ve nursed a few babes and now find you need more than stretchy fabric to keep things where they should be, we’ve got you covered.

When you’re looking for supportive swim tops, it helps to skim the description for these key words: underwire, hidden or otherwise; side boning (your hubby will probably find that amusing if his sense of humor hasn’t evolved much since junior high, like mine’s); and 3-row 2-column (or some combination) hook & eye closure like regular bras & sports bras have for extra security.

I found so many good choices this year, even more so than in years past. I noticed a happy and inclusive trend this year that stylish and on-trend swim brands are making the same style in regular, larger cup sizes and plus sizes. Yay for finally recognizing bodies come in more sizes than small, medium and large! I grouped swim styles by tankini/bikini and one-pieces, so everyone can find their comfortable level of coverage.

Twist Front Tops: My New Leg-lengthening Favorites

At a whopping 5’4″ I’m always looking for ways to magically make my legs look longer. You’ve heard me talk about leg lengthening shoe colors and styles, but this time I’m checking in to show you my latest favorite top to make legs look longer: the twist front top. It does the half-tuck we’re all so fond of here at TME for you. No guessing involved. No re-tucking involved. Yessssss.

Spring Denim: Destroyed and Embellished Light Wash

paige-verdugo-light

lace top  /  jeans  /  booties

True to my Taurus sign, I’m very much creature of habit – once I find a style of jeans that works on my body and fits well, it’s a no-brainer. And my love affair with Paige Verdugo skinnies is no secret! Though black skinnies will always be the most flattering in my opinion, I wanted to lighten up for spring. Here’s the thing: skinny, light-colored pants on can be tricky if it’s just an expanse of solid color stretching tightly across your thighs and bum, so here were some criteria I had in mind:

  • Something to add interest on the legs – distressing, destruction, embroidery or otherwise embellished
  • Variation in light denim shades within the jeans to make them as flattering as possible
  • Cropped or ankle length but not necessarily petite-sized makes it easier to find more options

It’s true that the Paige’s happened to be my faves, but I found a couple more styles that will definitely be on permanent repeat in my denim collection. (I made that sound way fancier than the crowded shelf at the top of the closet). Want to see which spring denim I loved?

Spring Denim #DressingRoomSelfies

jacket (coziest!!) | tee | jeans | boots (similar, some sizes here)

Soooooo, I’m a denim girl – remember last year’s search for the perfect spring jean?  This year, I’m back to my old tricks.  Actually, we all are.  The Mom Edit team has been off trying (and trying and trying in some cases) to find the perfect light-wash jean for Spring.

My criteria was as follows:

  1.  A perfect faded vintage blue wash –  this is the wash I’m in love with right now. I have tried (and tried) really light washes and they just aren’t for me, but that broken-in perfection? YES.
  2. Interesting fit (or at least new-to-my-closet?) – I wanted to push myself beyond a skinny jean, because I already found a perfect pair!

I tried on a ton and some definitely failed, but the winners made it allll worthwhile. I am always up for a jean challenge. Is there such thing as a denim geek? ‘Cause that’s me. Come. Come along into my madness…

Spring Dresses: Asos

Spring is here! Officially! Spring brings with it many occasions (and hopefully warm enough weather) for pretty dresses. If you have a vacation, wedding or Easter celebration coming up, look no further. Asos is having 20% off their already super reasonable dress prices and there are some really lovely, fun options. They have free standard shipping and 2-day shipping for a whole year is only $19.00. I’ve gotten some great dresses lately from Asos, as have most of us on the TME team. Here are my favorites…

A note on Asos dress sizing: I find that they run a little bit small, especially in the rib cage (I have a large rib cage) and the hips. If you run a bit wider or curvier in these areas, too, I’d suggest going up one size.
