While I’ve never attended prep school, as a New Englander I’m no stranger to the occasional popped collar or monogrammed accessory. Preppy style just goes so naturally with this coastal area, like dropping “r”from the end of words and complaining about the weather. Windswept beaches and Hunter boots? Madras plaid and Cape Cod? Nude flats and…everything? All the yes.
But it’s too easy to go overboard and start looking like a Stepford wife in head-to-toe classics. So I started with ten essential preppy pieces and found updated versions with a twist or maybe a teeny bit of edge. Traditional can be a good thing, but shaking things up is refreshing – let’s give it the old college try, shall we?
“The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of Eternal Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another…”: I think Proust is advocating for staycations? Feeling inspired, I set off to discover my familiar old city with new eyes. Specifically, those of a toddler and kindergartener.
Boston was my old stomping ground through my crazy 20s, and while I was quite familiar with the divey pubs and late night pizza spots, kid-friendly (ok, if we’re being honest, “daytime”) activities weren’t on my radar. And much like me, the city has changed – so much – over the last decade. I headed in to get the lay of the land before taking the kiddos, since the ‘Big Dig’ rearranged streets and exits almost on the daily for years. I didn’t need to worry, though, the new Greenway area is the perfect jumping off spot.
Scale of 1-10, how painful was back to work this week? I’m having major “holiday hangover”, missing having the hubs home during the day and trying to get the kids’ sleep schedule back on track after a week of relaxed rules and way too much sugar. I’m in need of some major motivation and organization – especially since my home “office” is a desk two feet from our bed, and our room happens to be the most disorganized and cluttered room in the house! (Although I heard hygge is the new KonMari, I don’t think it applies here…) 2016 kind of kicked our collective butts, as Shana alluded to – but we are strong, resilient ladies and it’s time to get back to business. Nothing centers me like having a functional, organized clean-ish workspace and I want the things I see and use everyday to “spark joy”. I found some gorgeous tech accessories and stylish office supplies to help start the year on the right foot.
Even the sale section is included in J.Crew’s 40% off Black Friday sale! (Sale section discount is 50% on some pieces). Yes, they’ve got the elevated basics (that I love to stock up on) covered but this year there are so. many. bold. surprises. I’m in love with their luxe bright wool coats, amazing shoes & statement jewelry.
Coziness. That’s pretty much all I can focus on clothing-wise right now, especially with a trip to the coast. (Think: cold, windy, rainy). And I love how even a quick trip to the shore is so renewing and refreshing…there’s just something about fresh air and being near a body of water. I forget how much my soul needs these little day trips to the beach.
I recently had a dear friend visit for a week (you may have seen our adventures over on Instagram @elletrain). She lives in Toronto and our time together is far too little. She left a few days ago and I’m feeling pretty bummed. It’s tough when good friends live far away, even with technology. And I think it gets harder as moms, wives, and business women to find time to foster friendships. The kind of friendships that reflect our best selves back to us. It’s too easy to lose ourselves in our families. And while it’s a very noble cause, I sometimes wake up and think “Wait, what happened to me? Where did I go?”
Hi ladies! So I got a little excited about back to school shopping this year…for myself. Shopping for my kindergarten girl can be tricky since we have very different um, aesthetics? Her love of rainbow and animal print rivals mine for black and stripes. Living with her creative fashion choices must be rubbing off on me though, especially in the shoe department. While I’m not going to be pairing tutus and rain boots anytime soon these leopard high tops and silver booties are going to be on replay all fall. Want to see how I’m mixing interesting shoes with classic cooler weather pieces?
So I was flipping through channels and came upon a charming show called “Don’t be Tardy” starring an ex-‘Real Housewife’, but which could in fact be the theme song for my life recently. (Facebook told me it’s my 8th wedding anniversary today, which totally didn’t register until my hubs rolled over bright & early and confirmed – um, whoops? I have no grounds for getting mad about his lack of planning for special events for the foreseeable future.) Also, suprise – I’m behind on back to school shopping. Most importantly, for a backpack. I realize many of your kids have started the school year already but in my state we don’t go back until after Labor Day so there’s still time! If your brain’s still on summer vacation like mine, I rounded up the coolest backpacks for toddlers through teens that have fast shipping (and many are on sale since it’s so late!) Off to have that recurring stress dream about forgetting it’s the 1st day of school…
It’s always exciting to stumble upon an amazing online sale, and even better when you can share the excitement with others. Ann Taylor is currently in the middle of their massive Cyber Spring sale where every. single. item. is 50% off plus free shipping from now until Monday night but they are already going fast. Here are just a few of my favorites on offer:
The end of February and beginning of March is my least favorite time of the year. As my fellow Midwestern residents can attest, these weeks are particularly bleak and uninspiring. It’s still very much winter, the snow shows little sign of letting up, and there are no more fun holidays to look forward to. The last thing I want to do is spend any more money on winter gear when Spring is so close, nor do I look forward to putting on the winter boots and coat I so excitedly purchased and wore only a few months ago.
So, I look to your #myeverydayedit Instagram posts to be inspired by fresh takes on styling. Here are the outfits I managed to pull together these last few weeks and also a collection of a just a few of your outfits that I found especially inspiring!
P.s. If you are new around here, #myeverydayedit is an Instagram tag we use at The Mom Edit to share our every day style. I promise, we are all nice gals and you should definitely consider joining in on the fun. (no pressure or anything) You can find us at: @ShanaChristine, @Scottiliz, @Camilledipoala, @Elletrain and @jessbobess.
top – I bought this top about three years ago at Forever21 and had trouble finding a lace cutout top in this mustard color. The closest I came to finding something similar was this Little Creek Top from ShopRuche for $48.99
Ah, the love-hate relationship with bras. Since having a child, I must admit, it’s definitely more hate for me…I think my boobs have changed about 542 times during and since pregnancy. Sienna will be 3 in May and I’m seriously hoping they’re done. I generally have to stick to underwire when I go out of the house (hello lift) and around the house I tend just to wear them, too, even though they’re not comfy at all. But, going braless is just not an option these days, even at home.
The bralette has become a serious godsend to solve this lofty (heh) issue. Not only is a good bralette pretty and good for wearing around the house for comfort, but it’s also perfect for traveling when you’re staying with friends or family and don’t want to subject them to your unruly girls first thing in the morning. Many of these styles here are comfy enough to sleep in when traveling and even at home if you like that light support at all times. (And I have a trick below for making saggy mom boobs look better in these light support bras!) I’m fairly conservative when it comes to my boobs though and am not up for braving the au naturelle (aka free and floppy, in my case) look outside the house, but if you’re good with that then by all means rock some of these beyond lounging and sleeping purposes!
