I’ve got cozy on the brain because this weekend we’re going to visit the in-laws in Minneapolis for an early Christmas. The kids think we’re going to the North Pole, but joke’s on us because it’s actually warmer in the arctic circle than the midwest right now! When we get back and thaw out, I’ll be wearing this fun sweatshirt and festive sweater leggings on repeat. Especially on Christmas morning and, if we’re being honest, the rest of the day since I’m not leaving the house! We make the rounds on Christmas Eve, then get to stay warm and cozy all day on the 25th – the benefit of having the only grandkids is that my parents come here for present opening and lots of food that seems to merge into one day long meal. This is a great outfit combo for staying in, but if you’ll be staying over with family or friends during the holidays, it’s guest-appropriate, too!

I. Love. The. Holidays. And you know the most perfect thing that happened on this day? It snowed!!!!! We get so many loads of rainfall each year, but snow is not a regular occurrence here in most of the Pacific Northwest, so we get pretty excited about the first snowfall. I will skip over the part where the next day it pelted us with freezing rain and focus on the magical wintery wonderland we had Thursday.
Sienna was insanely hilarious y’all, this being the first snow that she can remember. She was running around yelling “snow!” for 30 minutes straight when she went outside. She could not believe it! My heart definitely grew three sizes while watching the sheer joy on her little face.
Needless to say, I did not move out of these comfy clothes all day. My new favorite thing is a long cardigan. Pair with soft knit leggings, sherpa lined slippers and (possibly spiked) egg nog and you have a recipe for a perfect snow day right there.
Even the sale section is included in J.Crew’s 40% off Black Friday sale! (Sale section discount is 50% on some pieces). Yes, they’ve got the elevated basics (that I love to stock up on) covered but this year there are so. many. bold. surprises. I’m in love with their luxe bright wool coats, amazing shoes & statement jewelry.
Hi ladies! So I got a little excited about back to school shopping this year…for myself. Shopping for my kindergarten girl can be tricky since we have very different um, aesthetics? Her love of rainbow and animal print rivals mine for black and stripes. Living with her creative fashion choices must be rubbing off on me though, especially in the shoe department. While I’m not going to be pairing tutus and rain boots anytime soon these leopard high tops and silver booties are going to be on replay all fall. Want to see how I’m mixing interesting shoes with classic cooler weather pieces?
Hey ladies – I made a naptime escape for my local Nordstrom today to try on some athleisure picks and workwear options from the sale! What did I find? Lots of killer comfy leggings, cool jackets (including this amazing Zella moto puffer!), cashmere sweaters and leather jackets to swap out for blazers this fall.
Hello out there! Easing into your New Year’s workouts? I’m trying to be active but not beat myself up if I don’t get around to the perfect workout everyday. Here’s to more self-compassion in 2016!
Sooo….any other recovering perfectionists out there? I have to remember my main form of exercise right now is chasing around a toddler and that probably burns a decent number of calories! In addition to toddler-wrangling, I’ve also really been enjoying Yoga With Adriene’s 30 Day Bootcamp. Granted, I’m only on Day 5 and *should* be on Day 20…but…
Athleta. I did try on lots of great workout wear at Athleta (and got a parking ticket while doing so! Doh). It was worth it because they surprised me with some seriously good finds. If you haven’t shopped or perused Athleta before, they offer a mix of athletic wear and everyday clothing with a sporty-vibe.
One thing to note: I found their overall sizing really generous. I had to size down at least one size for pretty much everything I tried on. The sales associate let me know this as I was shopping, so that was really helpful. For example, I usually hover between and Small and Medium in general, but was a solid Small here, sometimes an XS. I will put the size at the end of each description, just for reference. Shout out to the helpful ladies at Athleta in the Pearl! Thank you so much for assisting me!
By the way, this post is not sponsored. It’s just me telling you what I think about the fit and style of their clothing. Here we go:
I found some great pieces for working out. I really loved their leggings. I tried both high rise and mid-rise, long and capri and they all felt very solid in construction and were great at holding in the mama tummy. They offer regular, petite and long lengths, too. I only tried the regulars, but think I might check out petite length for the full length leggings. I would definitely give their pants a try, among a few other pieces below…
Chi Top – Liked this for a basic, racerback workout top. The gray is nice with the bright pants. Size S
Spotlight Half Zip – This is one of the few tops I really liked. I’m wearing a small in this and it’s not quite as fitted as the model on the website’s is. If you really like fitted for running, you might size down even more. Size S
High Rise Quest Chaturanga Capri – I really really love this blue. Their capri pants also hit at a nice spot on my legs, I think. This is the high rise and it was a little too high rise for me, but this color is so good I would go with it! I also tried on the regular Chaturanga Capri and loved that rise better on me. Size XS
One boot that has been steadily gaining momentum over the last few years as a major trend is…the hiking boot. At first it was just a faux hiking boot. A hiking-inspired boot, rather, often with a wedge heel – something a fashion-girl would wear to be more #authentic (haha), not something constructed for actual hiking. But then…a funny thing happened – some of the really high end brands (think Prada, Dsquared2) started churning out boots that looked an awful lot like this one: an old school leather hiking boot with contrast laces.
Um. Heck YES.
So, when Shoes.com asked me to style up something from their (insanely large) inventory…I knew exactly what to do. It’s, like, the universe, you guys, wanted me to style up hiking boots. #liveauthentic #exploremore #adventure
Sidenote: Did you hear that Socality Barbie shut down her Instagram account? Such a bummer – talk about helping to keep things REAL.
All joking aside, hiking boots on the daily ROCK. Especially in the winter. They’re warm, waterproof, comfy….and frankly, with the modern tweaks to the styling that many companies are making….they’re surprisingly chic.
Here are a few ways I’m wearing hiking boots right now:
I’m taking over our usual #myeverydayedit spot to talk about leggings. In the comments section of the cozy sweater article, Beth had asked us for legging inspiration, so I’ve been doing a little thinking. If you follow me on Instagram (@shanachristine), I threw a few of these pics out there already, and asked TME’s insta-community for additional ideas. They’ve been insanely helpful, tagging relevant pics with #themomeditleggings. (I know, I know – so literal. I’ve been busy, you guys, and the only other hashtag I could come up with was #TMEslicklegs and NO. Just NO.)
In any case, here are three ways I’ve been wearing leggings-as-real-pants (as well as a few ideas from the #myeverydayedit community on Instagram).
Hey Gang! My sister Scotti is going to start contributing to The Mom Edit, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. She just had her first kiddo this past July (baby Greenlea if you follow me on Instagram), and I think you’re going to love her perspective.
When I was pregnant with my daughter, leggings became my best friend. Not only were they comfortable, but they expanded along with my butt, thighs and belly as the weeks went by. Regular leggings get old, though, so on a whim, I bought a pair of maternity leather leggings from H&M that I LOVED. They instantly made me feel more put-together and fashion-forward than the old leggings I was wearing on a (almost) daily basis. After having Greenlea, I found myself reaching for leggings again in my postpartum days and knew that I needed to purchase a pair of non-maternity leather leggings stat.
Faux leather leggings are as comfortable and as versatile as regular leggings, but add an extra bit of attitude and style to the same outfits. I love dressing mine up for date night by adding a blazer, fancy shoes and some stylish accessories or dressing them down for lounging or running errands by pairing them with comfy booties, fabulously soft t-shirts and cozy sweaters. They’ve been a saving grace with my postpartum body, hiding my pooch and replacing my pre-pregnancy jeans (um, made the mistake of trying them on too soon!) until I can fit in them again!
Sunday, while at High On Market Street, I noticed Betty lounging against the counter, waiting for her food. I loved how she dressed up a basic parka-and-leggings with a cool patterned scarf and unexpected wine-colored booties.
Betty's coat is from SheInside (and is now on sale for $45 – seriously), her leggings are Yummy Tummy, and her red booties are by Sketchers. She couldn't remember where her scarf was from…but if you are dying for both the scarf and easy tote (and I am)…may I suggest a visit to Idiopix on Etsy for the tote? The selection is totally overwhelming (and all totes are $15). I have my eye on this Alice In Wonderland tote…or maybe this french chocolate label…or ooooooo…this jellyfish one. Stunning!
For the scarf, I'd try this wool-and-cashmere blend, now 50% off at Nordstrom.
Love this twist on an easy, everyday look. Betty, thanks for being such a good sport.
