Hello from all the snow! Yes, we made national news and our governor declared a state of emergency last week here in Oregon. We do not know what to do with this much snow! In North Portland, we got 15″! It’s been nuts to say the least. And gorgeous. And so nuts. And lots of family time. 8 snow days since right before Christmas. Plus the Christmas/New Years holidays. Plus, MLK Jr. holiday. All the snow and all the family time. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. PLEASE let’s talk fashion instead. Mmmkay??

I just had a feeling you guys would like AllSaints just as much as I do. They do timeless wardrobe essentials with a modern twist. Plus, the quality and tailoring of their clothing is so SO good. I fell in love with the brand when they opened their first store in Chicago. At the time, I was still in college and had a difficult time parting with $10, so, the thought of purchasing something from them, even from the sales rack was laughable. Instead I walked around the store touching everything and whispering “someday my pretty, someday.”
Bummed you missed the sale? Never fret! Their sale is STILL going on. Select items are up to 50% off plus an additional 20% off of sale items at checkout using the code January.
I’ve got cozy on the brain because this weekend we’re going to visit the in-laws in Minneapolis for an early Christmas. The kids think we’re going to the North Pole, but joke’s on us because it’s actually warmer in the arctic circle than the midwest right now! When we get back and thaw out, I’ll be wearing this fun sweatshirt and festive sweater leggings on repeat. Especially on Christmas morning and, if we’re being honest, the rest of the day since I’m not leaving the house! We make the rounds on Christmas Eve, then get to stay warm and cozy all day on the 25th – the benefit of having the only grandkids is that my parents come here for present opening and lots of food that seems to merge into one day long meal. This is a great outfit combo for staying in, but if you’ll be staying over with family or friends during the holidays, it’s guest-appropriate, too!
I. Love. The. Holidays. And you know the most perfect thing that happened on this day? It snowed!!!!! We get so many loads of rainfall each year, but snow is not a regular occurrence here in most of the Pacific Northwest, so we get pretty excited about the first snowfall. I will skip over the part where the next day it pelted us with freezing rain and focus on the magical wintery wonderland we had Thursday.
Sienna was insanely hilarious y’all, this being the first snow that she can remember. She was running around yelling “snow!” for 30 minutes straight when she went outside. She could not believe it! My heart definitely grew three sizes while watching the sheer joy on her little face.
Needless to say, I did not move out of these comfy clothes all day. My new favorite thing is a long cardigan. Pair with soft knit leggings, sherpa lined slippers and (possibly spiked) egg nog and you have a recipe for a perfect snow day right there.
I like to call myself a social introvert. I love entertaining my friends, but am easily as happy curling up for some Netflix binging. I seriously need half and half in my life. My 60% extrovert 40% introvert self (thanks Meyers-Briggs) constantly battles back and forth between spending time with people or holing up by myself. Just ask my super-extroverted husband and daughter. So for my gift wish list this year my split-personality came up with gifts for both.
Have you guys seen this year’s range of cool, offbeat holiday sweaters out right now for kids? (Apparently some of you have, since the boutique I set up a few weeks ago got decimated during Black Friday/Cyber Monday!) In case you’re still looking for a holiday outfit that looks nice, lets kids express some personality and is comfortable, I found some that check all those boxes, and at reasonable prices, too! Think cheeky spins on traditional patterns (from astronauts to ice cream cones), unique color combinations and versatility to wear beyond the holidays.
Even the sale section is included in J.Crew’s 40% off Black Friday sale! (Sale section discount is 50% on some pieces). Yes, they’ve got the elevated basics (that I love to stock up on) covered but this year there are so. many. bold. surprises. I’m in love with their luxe bright wool coats, amazing shoes & statement jewelry.
My favorite place to visit during the Holiday season here in Grand Rapids is the Downtown Market. If you live in West Michigan chances are you’ve already been (and love it) and if you’re just passing through, it’s definitely worth a visit. Home to an expansive 24 vendor market hall that’s packed with inspiring local vendors: artisan foods, wines, gift boutiques, bakeries, clothing and decorated to the tills during the Holiday Season, the Downtown Market never fails to get me into the Holiday spirit. It’s a great place to connect with friends over coffee or a glass of wine, shop for Holiday gifts AND the perfect opportunity for me to break out my new favorite Holiday outfit.
In past years, my holiday outfits have centered around skirts or dresses (which I love), but since they were such dressy looks, and not very warm to boot, I usually only wore them once over the holiday season. This year’s outfit: a Blank NYC Vegan Pant, velvet cami and slouchy cardigan, is so much more versatile and functional, that I could almost wear them everyday!
It’s been a while since I considered wool coats. I’m typically a puffer kind of girl (because: WARM), and then I drank the leather-jacket koolaid (totally recommend, it’s delicious), and I’ve just been spending so much time sledding/playgrounding/Things Involving Cold, Muddy Areas that a beautiful wool coat wasn’t practical.
In fact, I had given my one beautiful wool coat to my mom after Raines was born. And she’s been happily wearing it for over eight years. And before that? I happily wore it for….wait for it, doing the math…seven years!
Which means that my old wool coat has been going strong for fifteen years. There aren’t many items that can boast a fifteen year love affair.
But that’s the thing about wool coats: you simply have them for forever. Which is partially why, I think, that I hadn’t yet invested in one. Finding the perfect wool coat is so flipping tricky, and if you mess it up, there’s not a lot of impetus to change. These coats stand the test of time, which is how you find yourself staring in your closet going, ‘well….this old thing….still there. Yup. There…it…is.’
So. Here are my thoughts on finding the perfect wool coat, along with my usual nonsense of trial and error and lessons learned.
The. Holidays. Are. Upon. Us. Everyone take a deep breath. Whew. But thank goodness they are. I think we all need a little extra cheer right now.
I adore the holidays and yes, am one of those who might start playing Christmas music a bit before Thanksgiving. Get mad if you must. Christmas music is the best. But, this year, we at TME got to get into the holiday spirit even earlier. When we chatted about doing holiday looks we were all excited. And then, some of us were a little stumped.
What actually encompasses a go-to holiday look for me? I rarely have anything very dressy to attend during the holidays (with the exception of last year’s fun cocktail party – I tried out looks for it here in one of my first posts!) So, like Cam, my go-to look had to feel festive and fun but be somewhat casual and comfy and work for a variety of occasions. I also wanted to invest in pieces I could wear again and again. (Don’t we always?)
Fortunately, I found a shimmery sweater and of course you know about these lovely suede boots and it just started to come together. So my go-to holiday outfit formula?
