Nursing-Friendly AND Post-Partum Friendly Fall Staples

Hey mamas of tiny ones…this post is yours. New mamas and all of us with still-soft tummies want a fall update, too. There are some lovely finds this season that are still kind to feeding babes and feeling fab postpartum.

Rounding up some of these finds made me a little nostalgic about those early days with Sienna. She was an adorable little bundle, with the roundest cheeks you ever did see! She started saying ‘hi’ at about 8 months old….and hasn’t stopped since.

Confession: I still have and wear a pair of my favorite maternity jeans. Nostalgia is a powerful force.

Gap Dressing Room Selfies!

So Laura and Jess walk into the Gap……

Jess’s Take

A couple of things I learned from my first dressing room selfie experience yesterday at the Gap:

1. Dressing room selfies are no joke.

2. Retail associates, especially those assigned to the dressing room area, are hardworking, patient, Saint like individuals.

It’s been a while since I’ve actually set foot inside a Gap store as I’ve started doing more and more of my shopping (and returning) online. And this isn’t meant to be a diss, but if I am at the mall, or happen to be passing a Gap, I usually end up bypassing it all together. Because after shopping at the Gap for 20+ years I feel like I already know what’s on the racks without looking inside.

But my day-trip to Gap helped to reminded me that what Gap does, it does it well, and affordably. I’ve mentioned before that I’m trying to focus on buying only wardrobe essentials: items that are timeless, high quality and verstaile. And on a budget like mine, Gap and it’s sister companies Banana Republic, Old Navy and Athletica, are great places to look.

So, here are four complete looks I put together yesterday.

The Best Spring Shoe For Boyfriend Jeans, Skinny Sweats, and Other Tricky Problems

2016-02-13 14.48.39

Few things in life get me more excited than finding a great go-to shoe. Amiright? I found the perfect transition shoe for early spring…yay!

I’d been looking for a good neutral, stacked-heel boot for a while and in my search mules started popping up everywhere. I found an amazing pair that 1. stay on, 2. look cute, 3. go with everything, AND 4. solve a few wardrobe problems I was having. Score!

These Steve Madden Miillo Mules have already made an appearance over on my Instagram account (@elletrain) and in #myeverydayedit post so you may have seen them there. I couldn’t be more in love with them and I thought I’d share how I styled them and just how versatile they are.

2016-02-13 14.49.22

See how they come up a bit more on your foot than some other slip-ons? This really helps keep them on well. The heel height is just right and the footbed is comfy. They come in black, too, but I am loving this taupe color because it goes with SO much. These mules are such a nice departure from the ankle boots I’ve been wearing all fall and winter, but they’re still warm enough for the coolness right now. My ankles love having a little freedom and showing a little ankle right now feels (and looks!) quite sexy.

Laura’s #myeverydayedit (I promise it’s not ALL overalls!)

blazer (similar) | top (similar) | jeans | mules | earrings (similar)

Hey hey… #myeverdayedit post is here in hopes to pull you out of a gray, mid-winter slump. That is what I’m trying to do over here anyway (see the workout outfit below…sheesh…I’m a goofball, for sure).

I love love looking at everyone’s #myeverydayedit pics on Instagram. It’s so fun to see what you’re wearing, especially in the gray days of winter. As for me, I’m still mostly wearing overalls. Big surprise, I know. Those of you who follow me at @elletrain are all too familiar with my overalls, but I did manage to include some other looks in the last week or so.

The 90’s Called

Blazers and boyfriend jeans and mules have been calling me lately …these mules I’m wearing: LOVE. And something besides the Kork Ease wedges that are on constant repeat! (More on those mules later with some outfit combination ideas.) This was for a casual date night with friends to celebrate my birthday. (38 and feeling great! And tired. But mostly great!)

Sir Yes Sir: Get Yourself A Military Jacket (or Vest)

I’m loving the military trend right now.  I normally reach for a faux leather jacket to throw on over everything, but the lighter weight military jackets (or vests) make for a nice change – especially with warmer weather coming.  They’ll look equally great over feminine flowy dresses as they will over jeans.  I can’t wait to bust out my distressed boyfriend jeans, dust off my sandals and finish with a lightweight army parka.  Buuut . . . we have snow on the ground.  Lots of it.  So for now, I’ll wear them with my Sorels.  Here are my top recommendations for rocking the military trend:

These Winter Boots Will Change Your Flare Jean Game

Based on reader comments/questions/etc., most of you are generally thrilled that flare jeans are having a moment.  The biggest complaint, however, is footwear.  We’re all kinda partial to flats (sneakers, in particular), and while I’ve tried to address the flares + flats combo in the past, there’s no doubt that heels and flares are a match made in sartorial heaven.

So.  What would you say, dear readers, if I told you that I’ve found a pair of wedge boots that are as comfortable as my sneakers?  Like really, seriously comfortable – Scotti babywears in hers – while being high enough to rock the flare?  And that they’re both waterproof and warm?

Bold words, I KNOW.

Boyfriend Jeans, Statement Ankle Boots And A Layering Trick

I’ve talked before about how boyfriend jeans are slimming down – the new phrase is girlfriend jeans – and how much more flattering this new shape is.  You guys obviously agree – this pair of girlfriend jeans was one of the most-purchased items by TME readers in 2015.  (Those jeans are sold out, but the newer, lighter wash is currently 33% off at Nordstrom.)

We loooove our comfy jeans.

Anyway, I’ve been looking for a pair of light-wash girlfriend jeans and I think I’ve found a good one – Seven for All Mankind’s Relaxed Skinny Girlfriend Jean.  They’re slimmer, but unlike the Rag and Bones ones featured before, they’re extra slouchy around the hips, making them look more like guys’ jeans (yet still sexy and feminine).  Also, most sizes are on sale at Amazon.  So there’s that.

I’ve been wearing these Sevens constantly (you can see them with paired with converse on my Insta, @shanachristine), but one of my favorite ways to style is with statement ankle boots and lots of layers.

(I’m practicing the rule of 3.  Gosh, that’s from 2011.  Anyone remember that old post?)

Much Ado About #myeverydayedit

My reaction to Shana asking if if I would be interested in joining the #myeverydayedit fun on Instagram looked something like this:

So to say I am excited is an understatement.

And just in case you don’t know what’s got me acting as giddy as a school girl at her first slumber party,  #myeverydayedit is a hashtag on instagram that Shana (@shanachristine) and others from The Mom Edit team (@camilledipaola, @scottiliz) use to post photos of their everyday outfits through out the week.

I’ve been following the #myeverydayedit posts since the get-go, admiring from a distance and trying to work up the nerve to join in. I think it’s such a cool concept and so much fun to see everyone’s unique individual style expressed through their day to day outfits.

To give you guys a better understanding of what you could expect from my posts, I thought it would be helpful if I tried to describe my own style… but I’d never really sat down and thought about my “style” in any definitive terms before and as it turns out, isn’t as easy as I thought it would be.

So armed with my most serious researching techniques (aka a bottle of wine and pinterest)  I stumbled upon this quote:

style quote

I think style is an expression of our individuality. Choosing what we wear is just another way we can express who we are and what we are feeling. It’s amazing how many unique variations of “lazy bum” I can come up with 😉  And this quote is really what #myeverydayedit is all about. There is no right way or wrong way to dress- what makes style fun is each person’s unique take on the clothes they choose to wear.

So….(shameless plug)…if you haven’t already- you should join us on Instagram for some fun. We don’t bite!

My personal style is probably best described as  “boho”, eclectic, and a bit adventurous. Comfort is high on my priority list.

Boyfriend Jeans: I Want To Wear Them With Heels, But My Life Doesn’t Support That

If you’ve spent any time on Pinterest, I’m sure you’ve seen some iteration of boyfriend jean styling that involves bare ankles and high heels.  Sometimes with slouchy, fuzzy sweaters, sometimes with blazers, sometimes with long tailored coats – I love it all.  But puzzling (at least to me) is how these outfits keep ending up on best-dressed lists called, “What You’ll Want to Wear All Winter!”  Or “The Best Way To Style Boyfriend Jeans When It’s Cold!”

I just…can’t.

I mean, even if I swap the heels out for some killer, sexy (yet walkable) flats….I still have a cold ankle problem to contend with.  But I’ve been drooling and swooning and desperately wanting to recreate these outfits….so…

The Challenge:  Come up with a way to wear boyfriend jeans now (with my Smartwool socks), but preserve that sort of I’m-not-really-trying-to-dress-up-but-I’m-so-totally-dressed-up vibe that this look is all about.

The Inspiration:

It almost doesn’t matter what pic I choose – there are so many similar variations on this theme.  But here’s the gist:

My Take:

Local Love: Day-To-Night Boyfriend Jeans and Our Fav Spot in Chinatown

Our move from Denver to Philadelphia was pretty heart-breaking.  I mean YES, it was our (Mike's) decision, nobody was forcing us (Mike)* to move, but still. We left so many good friends behind.  But I'll never forget our first foray into Philly.  We took the train and somehow ended up in Chinatown.  It was agonizingly hot, so humid you could see the air, the streets were teeming with strange smells, people were everywhere, and the looks on my little guys' faces were priceless.

*kidding, kidding.  Nobody forces this chick to do anything.

We may as well have moved to the moon.

But it was at that moment, that exact moment in all of the heat and smells and chaos that I knew we'd be OK.  Life is such a grand adventure, you know?  Sometimes I need a little discomfort to help me remember that.

So Philly's Chinatown has a special place in my heart.  The boys' too.  Not only does it contain their favorite restaruant in the city, but more often than not, when we wander on down these streets, we're greeted with sights like this:

I have no idea why or what was going on.  We were simply headed to lunch when BAM.  Dragons.  Which, you know, is pretty cool for a random afternoon in March.

Once the parade finished crossing, we headed over to Raines and Pax's favorite restaurant.

I am not kidding.  This, out of all of the (many, many) restaurants we've taken them to (we play it pretty fast-and-loose with "child-friendly dining")…this one is their fav. And, thanks to the hand drawn noodles and seriously flavorful, fresh-tasting broth, Mike and I love it, too.

Raines, on cold days will often ask, "Mom, when can we go back to that best-ever place?  With the long, long, looooooooooooong noodles?"

And I, such a small-town, Midwestern girl at heart, get such a kick out of seeing my boys learn how to use chopsticks.  (I know you New Yorkers are probably all, 'whatevs.  My kids mastered chopsticks at 2.')

If you are in the area, Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House is totally worth a trip.  The promise of shrimp dumplings (always fried, thankyouverymuch) and sliced beef noodle soup garnished with fresh spinach and cilantro lures us out of the burbs even on a cold, rainy day. (We usually get chopped chicken noodle bowls for the kids – basically a big pile of noodles in a broth, with the chicken on the side.)

And BTW I wore two sweaters.  TWO.  Because it's been that kind of Spring so far. And OMG I'M STILL IN MITTENS!  MITTENS, I TELL YOU! [shakes fist at sky]

I also realized (too late) that this outfit is slightly reminiscent of a little Chinese grandfather.  Especially in the very first pic.  Seriously – go look at it, I'll wait.  I'm basically the same shape as the men around me.    I think it's the boyfriend jeans and hat?  And prob my lack of hair?  Sigh.  I give up.  Winter, you hear me?  I give!

oversized sweater: I couldn't find anything similar (#nobodycares), but I think modern candidates for sweater layering would be this cropped, striped sweater (20% off with code FANDF), this crochet one, or even J.Crew's reversible merino short-sleeve sweater (order a size bigger for solid pooch-hiding).

hat: ASOS…similar

scarf: old…try Kenneth Cole's, 60% off ($50 once you add it to your cart)

jeans: JBrand Aiden Boyfriend jeans

boots: Steve Madden…similar (I wear these so much I'm thinking about getting the stone as well)

bag: ancient Marc Jacob's…similar

To go out that night, I ditched one of the sweaters and did an accessory swap.  Casual, but much better than my so-round-I'm-cute (#yes?) daytime look.

sweater: ancient one from J.Crew factory – I bought it to nurse in, eons ago.  Sob!  I wish it were this one, though.

belt: Target!

jeansJBrand Aiden Boyfriend jeans

heels: Pixie Market (thanks to this article)

bag: ancient Marc Jacob's…similar

I feel the need to re-do the whole big sweater + boyfriend jeans thing.  We will see.
