Fav Fall Color Combo: Navy, Black & Camel

Fall is officially here!  And this fall means back to work for me. Now, working from home I do appreciate being able to do my design work in my PJ’s occasionally, but for the most part, (as I mentioned in this post early this year) I try to get dressed everyday. It helps me get in the right headspace for work. And, as a designer, nothing gets me inspired more than finding a new favorite color combo!

This fall, the palette I’m obsessed with is navy, black and camel. I put together some favorite items in these colors and paired them with a few great pieces courtesy of Sole Society to round out the look…Join me (and one gorgeous cup of tea).

How I Wear Sneakers in the Winter (Hint: SOCKS)

Once December hits, I typically swap sneakers for boots.  But the lack of snow has me seriously reconsidering.  I mean…nothing is more comfy than sneaks and socks, right?  But which socks?  (Of course, if I’m wearing hightops then I gleefully grab the wooliest ones I can find.)

So: If I want to wear my black lowtop sneakers out in the cold….black socks, right?  Kind of like that old school man-rule about matching your socks to either your pant leg or your shoes?  Something like that?  And since I couldn’t *quite* remember which it was (Mike ignores that rule anyway), I did black on black on black because that, my friends, is always a winning combination.

Says me, anyway.

Four Ways To Wear Hiking Boots

One boot that has been steadily gaining momentum over the last few years as a major trend is…the hiking boot.  At first it was just a faux hiking boot.  A hiking-inspired boot, rather, often with a wedge heel – something a fashion-girl would wear to be more #authentic (haha), not something constructed for actual hiking.  But then…a funny thing happened – some of the really high end brands (think Prada, Dsquared2) started churning out boots that looked an awful lot like this one:  an old school leather hiking boot with contrast laces.

Um.  Heck YES.

So, when asked me to style up something from their (insanely large) inventory…I knew exactly what to do.  It’s, like, the universe, you guys, wanted me to style up hiking boots.  #liveauthentic #exploremore #adventure

Sidenote:  Did you hear that Socality Barbie shut down her Instagram account?  Such a bummer – talk about helping to keep things REAL.

All joking aside, hiking boots on the daily ROCK.  Especially in the winter.  They’re warm, waterproof, comfy….and frankly, with the modern tweaks to the styling that many companies are making….they’re surprisingly chic.

Here are a few ways I’m wearing hiking boots right now:

Do You Have A Sexy Sweater? Here’s Why It’s My Holiday Must-Have.

Yeah.  So I’m still in these jeans.  And I’ve been meaning to talk about this jacket FOREVER.  And yes – the sexy sweater + bustier combo, too.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.  Suffice to say that I gots some things to say regarding holiday style.

Holiday?  I KNOW.  Feel free to throw things, I do realize we haven’t hit Halloween yet.  IN MY DEFENSE…..I missed out on ALL holiday fun last year, *cough*chemo*cough* so I’m beyond excited for holiday festivities this year.  Like really, seriously, over-the-moon, excited in almost a manic, crazy-person kind of way.  I will be bringing Jolly this year, with a capital “J”.  BRINGING. THE. JOLLY.

And thank you guys – so much – for your kind words, welcoming my sister.  I’m so thrilled to have Scotti here, and because of her, was able to take some (much needed) time off in New York last week.  (And Instagrammers, your NYC suggestions were SPOT ON.  Seriously, wow.)

Now back to sexy sweaters.  Unlike my “sexy turtlenecks” which I keep (unsuccessfully) trying to make a thing [insert eyeroll from my husband], the sexy sweater is, actually, sexy.

Your Closet Called. It Said It Needs These Faux-Leather Jeans – Sponsored Post

Nordstrom asked if I’d like to take a look at their latest selection of denim. [snort]  Little do they know that I’m ALWAYS looking at their latest selection of denim.  BWAH HA HA-

Anyway.  There are few things in life that get my heart beating faster than denim.  Denim is my currency.  (And I still do that trick my friend Amber taught me:  “I could buy that shirt….but it costs half a jean.  Hmmmmm…..”)

So.  After pouring over pages and pages and pages of denim (seriously, Nordie’s selection is pretty staggering), there was one pair I couldn’t get out of my head.  Not my typical choice, brown(??), but the faux leather and the zipper details….well.  So I ordered them.

Holy Mary Mother of G– these are comfortable.   Here is my ode to the brown faux-leather:

Shopping: My Fav Denim, On Sale Everywhere

Denim sales abound!  And many of the styles I've featured here on ANMJ are now on sale….

Moto Denim

Remember how we were all drooling over cozy sweaters and moto pants?  Yes. Exactly.  And how awesome are preppy white jeans as moto denim? (ps.  The Free People Moto previously featured are also on sale.)

1. DL1961 Hazel Moto Skinny Jeans, $130

2.  AG Coated Moto Skinny Jean, $122

3.  J Brand Mid-Rise Moto Skinny, $253 (25% off with code DENIM)

4.  Hudson Stark Moto Jeans, $220 (25% off with code DENIM)

Patched or Destroyed Denim

This whole category makes my heart beat fast.  I wantwantwant each pair below.  (But if I'm forced to play favorites the leather patches OMG.)

1. True Religion Carrie Patchwork Flare Denim, $226

2. Textile Elizabeth and James Patched Jean, $135

3. Seven For All Mankind Josefina Destroyed, $225 (25% off with code DENIM)

4. Blank NYC Relaxed Straight Leg, $88

(This style was on sale at Piperlime, but sold out before I could publish.  However, Shopbop has them in stock – comparatively affordable, even at full price.)

The Perfect Gray Jean

I've been on a hunt for the perfect gray jean.  I want something interesting, something with variation and whiskering. These fit the bill exactly.

1. Current / Elliott Ankle Skinny, $159

2. Rag and Bone Bomber Legging Jean, $184

3. Citizens of Humanity Racer Jeans, $119  (or a few sizes here for $160 – call and Nordies will price match)

4. Citizens Avedon Ultra Skinny, $218 (25% off with code DENIM)

Coated Denim

I'm a coated denim devotee.  Not only are they comfortable and insanely cool, but they actually repel water a bit better than regular denim, making them my go-tos on rainy days.  TRUE STORY.

(ps.  Am also DYING over Rag and Bone's Portobello pant.  Typically $440, but on sale for $130.  Like a coated denim/dress pant hybrid. #sofreakinggorgeous)

1. Blank Coated Denim, $60

2. 7 For All Mankind High Shine Skinnies, $198 (25% off with code DENIM)

3. AG The Legging, Coated, $164

4. J Brand Coated Skinny Jean, $144  (or here in a slightly darker wash)

I have this jean and it's crazy-soft.  One of my most-worn pairs (see it here).

My Tried and True

These are my current favorites – I've worn each of these over&over&over.

1.  JBrand Love Story in Cosmo, $185 (25% off with code DENIM)

These are my favorite flares.  You can see them here or here.

2. AG The Legging Jean in Prado, $125 or 4 years seattle, 6 years dive or 18 year heartbreaker, each $220 (25% off with code)

One of my very favorite skinnies.  AG Denim is super soft and comfortable, but really knocks it out of the park with their washes.  That perfect blue, that pefectly faded look, truly the best I've seen.

3. J Brand Mid-Rise Skinny Cord in black, $123

I have these in camel, and love the fit (thank you JBrand for the mid rise).  Love how the black cords almost look like velvet.  #rockstar

4. Rag and Bone Skinny or Cigarette, $145

Rag and Bones are my current favs.  They are really skinny through the leg, and I've found that they look better with ankle booties than most other jeans.

No promises on sizes, Mamas – these things are selling quick.

Happy Shopping!

The 2013 Holiday Style Guide For the Lazy

Bald or not bald*, the holidays are upon us.

Feels rather ominous, written out like that, doesn't it?  But in any case, you know the drill:  for the next few days, let's chat about the best ways to shine ourselves up all purty-like….with MINIMAL EFFORT EXPENDED.

This year I'm focusing on….black pants and the white, button-down shirt!

I know.  Two of the most boring pieces ever to grace a closet.  Can I do it?  Can I manage to make those two snooze-worthy closet staples interesting?  Well.  TIME WILL TELL.

I also have a few other tricks up my sleeve.  So we'll see.

shirt: old from Theory (pricy, but they have the best collars and perfect amount of stretch)…this one is 50% off

sweatshirt: Emerson Fry now sold out, but also comes in black silk

coat: old IRO from pre-baby days.  This one has a similar shape…or try this retro cape at Modcloth

denim: coated JBrand

shoes: old, but I FINALLY found a near-exact pair.  40% off to boot.

accessories: ASOS hat, and a now-retired Stella & Dot necklace.  Try this stunner.  Or this one.

Happy December already.  Wow.

*New here?  For the record, I am currently bald.  Or bald-ish.  Don't worry, it's temporary.  I had a recent brush with breast cancer but it's over and done with and WHEW!  So that's that.
