Since this week the blog is like one big ‘introduction to the opposites’ sketch, this athleisure queen was tasked with finding my inner glam. Immediately I started trolling Scotti’s posts for inspiration since she’s the resident glamazon around here. (And it’s not just in blog posts. Fun story: the first time I met Scotti in person was at the hotel we were staying at for Shana’s surprise birthday last year. It seriously felt like a celebrity sighting, she is that put together even on weekend morning – gorgeous makeup, hair did, heels. Me, on the other hand? Pretty sure my outfit involved stretchy pants and sneakers, and maybe tinted lip balm if I was feeling extra fancy.) I alternated between panic and avoidance for a week or so, until Shana asked how it was going on our weekly call. I said, quite seriously, “How about glam sweatshirts?” Shana replied, even more seriously, “I think it’s time to make an appointment with a Nordstrom stylist”. Gulp. Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly of what happened when I did.

I’ve realized that in the past few years my style has changed dramatically. I used to wear dresses and lace and tights and ruffles way more often. Now, as you know, it’s jeans, boots, jackets and sweatshirts…and a raincoat, obvs.
I’m sure much of that change has to do with chasing a busy child around and another big part of it is living in a super rainy, messy climate. But I think a little bit of it has to do with a shift in my personality. I was a quiet person who didn’t speak up very much for a long time. Now I just want to wear moto jackets and tell people what I think. It’s probably part of getting older. Ha!
You know I love edgy and casual and am drawn to anything denim and black. So, for my style challenge, the TME team agreed I needed to go more romantic and feminine. My only stipulation was no statement necklaces – I mean, I had to draw the line somewhere. But, when I wound up choosing a lacy top that Scotti already has in another color I knew I was on the mark. Haha.
Motherhood is a balance between doing what’s good and doing what keeps everyone sane. Some days you’re right on time everywhere, everything falls in place, no one has a meltdown… and some days you’re just trying to make it until bedtime without completely losing it.
And while a pair of shoes isn’t going to do school pick-up for you or anything, a slip-on style might just save you a few seconds when you’re already running late (says #worldsokayestmom). Sole Society has some lovely, quality slip on flats that I checked out…while spoiling Sienna with Valentine’s Day donuts. And I have to say, I’m in love.
Finally. Y’all, I’ve struggled since the holidays to find a new outfit I love. It was probably all the snow days I’ve spent in leggings and Uggs, but um, ugh. The creativity was gone. But…I’m back, baby! I randomly threw this outfit together for a kid’s birthday party (in all fairness, he is a pretty stylish 5 year old) last weekend and I’m loving it. I wanted comfortable but cool and I’ve landed on a new favorite…striped tee, moto jacket, blanket scarf & flat black boots. Check it.
Last week we had winter coat + boot combos from coast to coast, now it’s New England’s turn! Even though the weather is more November than late January here lately, I promise this wool Madewell City Grid coat and tall Sorel Joan of Arctic boots stands up well to blizzard conditions.
I mistakenly thought it would be cool to have my ‘spousetographer’ snap some blog pics in a snowstorm a few weeks ago – as it turns out, I stayed surprisingly warm and toasty no matter how frosty the atmosphere (literally and otherwise). For the sake of marital harmony, I got in touch with a self-professed local ‘momtographer’ this week when it was in the 40s and was still really comfortable. The boots were maybe overkill, but handled the chilly muck beautifully so they’ll be on repeat from October – April around here.
Soooo, only like 5 more months of winter!
Good news though – I found lots of similarly styled coats and Joan of Arctics that are on super sale right now so you still have time to enjoy them this winter.
There are some killer pieces on sale right now. Some are going fast. I found some really fabulous wardrobe-staple kind of finds, like washed black skinny jeans, tall boots, amazing sweaters. We still have quite a bit of winter left, so snap these babies up for a little closet-boost. I know I need one about now, since I’ve lived in slippers and leggings for weeks!
Hello from all the snow! Yes, we made national news and our governor declared a state of emergency last week here in Oregon. We do not know what to do with this much snow! In North Portland, we got 15″! It’s been nuts to say the least. And gorgeous. And so nuts. And lots of family time. 8 snow days since right before Christmas. Plus the Christmas/New Years holidays. Plus, MLK Jr. holiday. All the snow and all the family time. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. PLEASE let’s talk fashion instead. Mmmkay??
I just had a feeling you guys would like AllSaints just as much as I do. They do timeless wardrobe essentials with a modern twist. Plus, the quality and tailoring of their clothing is so SO good. I fell in love with the brand when they opened their first store in Chicago. At the time, I was still in college and had a difficult time parting with $10, so, the thought of purchasing something from them, even from the sales rack was laughable. Instead I walked around the store touching everything and whispering “someday my pretty, someday.”
Bummed you missed the sale? Never fret! Their sale is STILL going on. Select items are up to 50% off plus an additional 20% off of sale items at checkout using the code January.
I’ve got cozy on the brain because this weekend we’re going to visit the in-laws in Minneapolis for an early Christmas. The kids think we’re going to the North Pole, but joke’s on us because it’s actually warmer in the arctic circle than the midwest right now! When we get back and thaw out, I’ll be wearing this fun sweatshirt and festive sweater leggings on repeat. Especially on Christmas morning and, if we’re being honest, the rest of the day since I’m not leaving the house! We make the rounds on Christmas Eve, then get to stay warm and cozy all day on the 25th – the benefit of having the only grandkids is that my parents come here for present opening and lots of food that seems to merge into one day long meal. This is a great outfit combo for staying in, but if you’ll be staying over with family or friends during the holidays, it’s guest-appropriate, too!
I. Love. The. Holidays. And you know the most perfect thing that happened on this day? It snowed!!!!! We get so many loads of rainfall each year, but snow is not a regular occurrence here in most of the Pacific Northwest, so we get pretty excited about the first snowfall. I will skip over the part where the next day it pelted us with freezing rain and focus on the magical wintery wonderland we had Thursday.
Sienna was insanely hilarious y’all, this being the first snow that she can remember. She was running around yelling “snow!” for 30 minutes straight when she went outside. She could not believe it! My heart definitely grew three sizes while watching the sheer joy on her little face.
Needless to say, I did not move out of these comfy clothes all day. My new favorite thing is a long cardigan. Pair with soft knit leggings, sherpa lined slippers and (possibly spiked) egg nog and you have a recipe for a perfect snow day right there.
