Art-As-Style-Inspiration, And The Happiest-Ever Footwear From Jessbobess

I’d love for you to meet my dear friend, Jess (aka @jessbobess).  If you’ve ever swooned over our fashion illustrations on TME (like this illustrated capsule wardrobe, or THIS), then you’re familiar with Jess’ art.  She works out of a soft leather notebook (pictured), which is filled with illustrations, watercolors, pen and ink, quotes, lists (OMG the LISTS), spilled wine/coffee/whatever and is just one big mishmash of inspiration and spirit.

I can pour over the thing for hours.  Such an amazing peek into a beautiful soul.  (And go check out her blog – This Wild Precious Life.  It’s a little bit of everything – art, style, humor, real life…I love it.)

Birkenstocks And Socks. (You Had To Know This Was Coming)

It seems inconceivable, as I spent the last few hours today sweating around NY in a miniskirt, that only two weeks ago I was wearing thick wool sweaters.  That is the way of Michigan summers, I suppose.  As a teen growing up in Marquette, MI, summers meant new bikinis and a new J.Crew cotton rollneck sweater.  Remember those?  [snort]

But because I’m a 90’s girl, summer also meant Birkenstocks.  So cool with that rollneck sweater!  And fall?  Well.  Fall meant Birkenstocks WITH SOCKS.

I loved it then, I love it now.  Naysayers, say what you nay!  I’m unabashedly, unapologetically, unashamedly going to rock Birks with socks.

I had to work through a few things, though.  Here’s what I learned:

1.  The newer Birkenstocks that say “soft footbed” are MUCH more comfortable than the Birks of yesteryear *cough*90’s*cough*.  No break-in period required.  And that birko-flor stuff is crazy soft, as is the suede.  As much as I wanted to be all die-hard CLASSIC LEATHER BIRKS OR BUST….those were the pairs I returned.

2.  For wearing birks + socks with skinny jeans, the socks matter.  Trying to get the right level of scrunched at the top of the sock was driving me nuts until I found these socks from Free People.  The little crochet hem saves it.  (Of course, one doesn’t need to worry about scrunching socks if wearing Birks old-school: straight-leg jeans with ripped hems, Wigwam socks.  #ohyesIwill #withachoker)

sweater:  Marc Jacobs James Sweater, on sale!! at Nordstrom

jeans: Rag and Bone (old)…but the similar Rag and Bone Stretch Skinny Jean in seaside wash is on sale for $118

shoes: Birkenstocks Arizona Soft Footbed in Golden Brown Birko-Flor

socks: Free People Short Highland Boot Sock  (If you don’t want to pay shipping for just a pair of socks….I strongly suggest this sweater.  It is everything.  Or hey – Nordstrom has similar socks in a longer length.)

lipstick: Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balm in Coy

All of these pictures were taken not far from my parent’s lake house (“camp”).  Didn’t I grow up in a gorgeous place?  #blessed #justkidding

I have such a love-hate relationship with #hashtags.

Anyway, happy Friday!!  Mike and I are headed up to NY for the Reward Style party on Saturday….anyone else going?  It’s always a good time, and Mike’s bringing the camera, so hopefully we can find some good #nyfw inspo….we will see.

White Dresses, Birkenstocks, and our New Fav Patio, In Riva (Local Love)

A few weeks ago, we headed down to Kelly drive to go for a little family walk.  And were greeted by this sight:

Oh.  Oh.  It was the Manyunk Bike Race, which is, apparentely, a big deal.  There was music, and beer, and a kiddie carnival.  They had some sort of zip-line thing for kids that dare-devil Raines was ALL ABOUT.

And guess who's behind Door #2?

It's Pax!!  Pax typically hates this kind of stuff so I don't know WHAT ON EARTH possessed him to try this.  I was freaking out (and taking pics, naturally).

Brave little puppy.  But he did it.  And when he was done?  There were a bunch of people watching and laughing and pointing – he looked so small, you know?

Waving to his fans.

This was my reaction:

Dork.  I am a dork.

Raines proceeded to go 2394876 more times, and Pax went ONCE more and then was all "I done, Mom" and really…who can blame him?  You couldn't pay me to go on that thing.  Well.  You could, I suppose, but it would be for a lot of money

After all of that excitement Mama needed a drink, so we wandered into a parent-wonderland known as In-Riva's patio.

I consider any joint with a patio to be kid-friendly.  But this place also had crazy-amazing pizza, great drink selection, and live music.

Yup – it was as good as it looks.  In-Riva is now one of our fav weekend haunts.  They don't always have live music, but tiring the kids out with a walk along the river then stopping for pizza and drinks is one of the great joys in life.  You know?

As are white dresses in summer.  I like mine with birks.  I have to credit Garace Dore with planting this seed.   A year ago she was talking about white dresses and said, "With Birks?  I do not think I am ready" and I thought "I SO AM" and now – just this past week!! – even Who What Wear is on board.  So there you go.  I'm not crazy.  (Almost.  I have a shirt that says almost not crazy and I think that's about right.)

dress: Milly…similar white cotton eyelet shift dress by Theory (on sale!)

Shoes: Naot Tahoe (like Birks, but more narrow)

Bag: Kate Spade (similar bag)

Sunnies: Ray-Bans

On Pax: Afrika American Apperal leggings, One Jackson shirt from Thred Up, Vans, Strider Balance Bike (aka the best money we've ever spent on anything, ever.)

On Raines: Tribe is Alive Be Brave tee, Tea Collection Knit Playwear Pants, Saltwater sandals

I also put together a little white dress + birkenstock shopping list, if you're interested.
