Reader Q: How To Wear Flares With Flats

I received this awesome question from Leslie:

Hi Shana, I am a long time reader of your blog and I love how you are encouraging moms to be stylish in ways that work for our lifestyle. I am taking your Fall Edit to heart and looking for some interesting jeans and am particularly drawn to flares…I love my skinnies but am ready for a break! But I am having the hardest time figuring out what shoes to wear them! Everyone styles flares with heels, which I love, but this momma needs the practicality of flats for everyday life (parks, play dates, Target runs…). Any styling tips?

Thanks so much!
Leslie

Leslie, I HEAR YA.  My biggest problem with flares is that they look so much better with heels.  Like, no contest, heels win hands-down.  But like you, I’m most often in flats.  So I took this styling challenge to heart to see if I could figure out a chic way to wear flats and flares.  After an embarrassing amount of tries over many weeks, I think I came up with something worth hemming for.

(And only one pair of flares were harmed in the process. RIP, Seafarer flares.  Thank goodness you were bought on sale for a mere fraction of your usual cost else I would’ve lost my mind.  #allinthenameofresearch)

What I Wore In NYC (Hello, Converse Hightops)

converse-hightops-rag-and-bone-destroyed-skinnyjeans-black-turtleneck-1

We spent a week in NYC last month – the whole fam.  Mike had a conference to attend, so myself and the boys tagged along.

It was no hardship.

We rented an apartment near a park, and spent our days exploring, just the three of us.  I had a ton of tips from my Instagram buddies about where to bring the boys (thank you thank you thank you!!) and the whole week was a good reboot for all of us.  (I’ll share the where-to-go tips in another article – they’re too good to miss.)

More Loungewear As Daywear: Beach Pants

hurley-beach-pant-jcrew-silk-cami-soludos

Let’s call these what they are:  glorified pajama pants.

hurley-surf-pant-jcrew-cami-3

But the folks over at Hurley call these “Beach Pants” which makes them sound more like real pants.  And for those of you who have asked about options for covering pregnancy-induced (or not) varicose veins…..YES, THESE.

Earlier this summer I actually threw these pants on with a pair of heels to entertain at home.  I think it worked OK.

My Daily Beach Uniform and a Few Fun Links (Happy Friday!)

I swear.  Only in Michigan.

The sun does warm things up….eventually.  Nothing like hot sand on skin to really feel like summer, right?

wearing:

sweater: Marc Jacobs James Sweater (size XS/S)

shirt: Free People FP ONE Fly Away Tank (size XS) – Nordstrom also has a patterned version

shorts: Ugh. Abercrombie, simply because I’m still searching for a good low-rise pair.  Some readers have recommended the Dolphin shorts by Free People, actually. (A bit longer than their shark bite hem shorts.)  May still be too high-rise for the pair I’m looking for.

bikini:  J.Crew Neon bikini in Neon Papaya (currently 40% off with code DEPTOFSALE.)  If you’ve got a small bum I actually prefer the Neon Shrunken Lowrider bikini…and while my bikini top is gone, the Neon papaya ruched french top is pretty cute (or a classic halter).

shoes: Soludos Sand Lace Up in woven sand (on sale for $43 at Zappos) – I love the oxford vibe of this canvas shoe.

backpack: Makr Farm Rucksack.

Friday Links!!

Ok, first of all, J.Crew is having a sale that *I think* ends today.  It’s 40% off all sale items, AND 40% off a selection of full price items with code DEPTOFSALE.  Which brings me to my next point:

I created a sale shop.  Whenever I find something fabulous that’s currently marked down, I’ll add it to the shop.  Currently, there are some pieces in the shop from the J.Crew sale, and few from Nordstom, and – so exciting – Shopbop has a ton of expensive t-shirts marked down.  You know how I love an expensive tee.  See the shop for my picks.

I loved this NPR segment on the link between play and brain development.  “Countries where they actually have more recess tend to have higher academic performance than countries where recess is less.”

Are you reading Mother Mag?  You should be – they’re fabulous.  I’m now contemplating Mommy-and-Me outfits (no seriously – check ’em out I’m tempted!!), loved their round-up of cool sneaks and their fresh take on a mom-uniform.

Courtney emailed to let me know that Elle Macpherson has a lower-priced line at JCPenny.  Cute stuff!

Kim emailed about Rent the Runway’s new Pro subscription.  For $30/year, you can add additional dresses to each order for free (and get free shipping).  It looks like they’re also offering a new Unlimited subscription which basically works like Netflix DVDs, but with designer clothes.  Oooooooo…..I think I should try it.  In the name of “research” of course.

As you can probably guess from the pics, we are up in Michigan enjoying my sister’s new baby and having WAY too much fun with old friends and family.  Lots of summer bliss happening, for sure.  Hope your August has been relaxing!

Happy Weekend!

xo,

S

ps.  A thank you all SO much for your amazing ideas on yesterday’s play post.  I’m now trying to figure out how to get a big pile of dirt, PVC pipes, and tree stumps into my yard.  🙂

Reader Style: A Review of SuperGa and Spring Court Sneakers (Think Comfier Than Converse)

IMG_20140517_102854

I was delighted to get the following note from Allison:

Something I've been trying to find is the perfect cute sneaker.  I had a pair of Bensimons which were adorable, but honestly, not comfy to wear for very long as they were so flat and with little support.  Same goes for Converse.  But what I've tried out more recently are Superga and Spring Court … Italian and French tennis shoes.  They aren't quite as slim because they're a unisex style, but there is a lot more support.  The Superga is still pretty firm, but has a bit of arch support.  The Spring Court are my favourites because they have a removable insole that is really cushioned and comfy for playing or walking all day.

Seriously helpful, right??  So we email-chatted a bit, and she indulged me by sending over a close-up of the Supergas and Spring Courts:

IMG_20140516_150853

Here's a side by side of the superga and spring court (both eu size 39).  I'm actually planning to return the superga and get another pair of the spring courts as that insole is unbelievably comfy and now I'm spoiled! (The spring court shown is from a pair I have had for awhile… I actually dyed them because I wanted a darker blue than I could find in my size at the time, so they survived that plus a lot of play).

I love both of them (and now am obsessing over navy sneaks).  Allison, rock star that she is, THEN sent over pics of her next favorite sneaker trick:  swapping out the laces.

IMG_20140523_125343

Which do you prefer?  I honestly can't decide.

Bonus, they make them in kids sizes too (Velcro or laces) and they are even cuter on the small people.

Awwwwww….

_20140517_141335

Where To Buy?

So here's the downside:  finding Spring Court sneakers aren't easy.  Luisviaroma carries a few children's Spring Court styles, Yoox has an ever-changing selection of one or two Spring Court styles (currently only one), J.Crew used to carry them (but currently does not – I'll bet this changes eventually)…or you can go right to the french Spring Court website and order some.

Now Superga is a different story – you can buy Superga sneaks at Zappos.  Ordering ease alone may be why I pick Superga over Spring Courts.  Zappos even has my favorite camo Supergas, as well as chambray, glitter (which for some reason I am drawn to, magpie that I am), some cah-razy floral that is seriously awesome,  and then all of the classic colors as well.

Allison, thank you SO much for this amazing review!  I've been debating over another Converse purchase, but was holding off because – as you mentioned – they're not super comfortable (especially without socks in the summer).  So thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts and adorable pics!  This mama-community so appreciates it.

Allison's Outfit Deets (top pic)

I wore my sneakers today with bright blue tights, a thrifted skirt (h&m), a black tshirt (h&m), an old Gap cardigan, a dotted scarf from a trip to Barcelona, earrings by Darla Hesse, brooch by Fairyesque.  Bag is a Moop Paperback in grey (found this thanks to your blog and love it!) Sneakers by Spring Court naturally.

I usually try to wear sneakers with a skirt or dress as it feels much cuter than just with jeans.

The Case For Patterned TOMS

DSC_1445

Every once in a while I get an email from a reader asking me which pair of TOMS she should buy.  Plain red?  Something patterned?  A neutral?  I totally get it:  with so many to choose from, it's overwhelming.  But it's a tough question to answer….I mean it depends on your personal style, right?  On what else you have in your closet?

DSC_3238

Or perhaps I'm making this overly complicated.  Because the truth is, in the last 4-5 years, there's one pair of TOMS I reach for the most.

DSC_1449

With plain tees, graphic tops, patterns, stripes…..I reach for a pair of patterned TOMS, chosen simply because I liked the pattern.

Only good vibes, man.

DSC_3227

Not because they fixed some perceived hole in my closet or because I thought they'd match something in particular, but simply because I liked them.  And that fact (I like 'em) has given them more longevity than I expected.

TOMS may not be the height of style…in fact, I can think of footwear for each of these outfits that would probably look better….but how many pairs of shoes let you do this?

DSC_1477

R rolls his eyes at me, but not before I see him bite back a smile.  Little Pax, however, takes one look at my twirling and shrieks, "MOM!  I WUV YOUS DANCE!!"

Game, set, match.  Well played, TOMS.

Outfit Deets

Three Perfect Spring Transition Outfits For Nursing & Post-Partum Mamas

Well shoot.  I'm not currently nursing (and "post-partum" is stretching it)…but I'd wear any of these in a heartbeat.

Post_nursing

Look 1:

Flower Hair Clip, ASOS, $15 (I'm picturing this tucked nonchalantly into a messy bun)

Free People Story Teller Tee, $68 (it's waffle knit – so cozy!)

Nixon Time-Teller Watch, $74 (I'm addicted to these bright, oversized watches)

Striped Backpack, BCBG at Nordstrom, $88

AG Stevie Cuffed Jeans, $188 at Anthro

TOMS in Orange Palm Trees, $54 (the only thing better than palm trees would be…nothing.  Nothing is better than palm trees.)

Look 2:

Lanston Asymmetic Top, $95 at Shopbop (pooch-hiding, nursing-friendly drapiness at its best right here)

Autumn Cashmere Cardigan (almost sold out…try Target or Everlane)

Chewbeads Red Bracelet, $17 (A teething-friendly bracelet that I would actually wear…)

Marc Jacobs Medium Tate Tote, $198 (I swore by these when my little guys were young…and I'm still using them.  These nylon, washable bags rock my diaper-baggin' world.)

Gap Boyfriend Jeans (Soooo…I tried them recently and wasn't impressed.  Have been hearing much better things about Old Navy's version.  Go figure.

Tieks Unmellow Yellow, $195 (aka my favorite flats ever)

Look 3:

Blackbird Colorblock Tee, $68 at Anthro

Slouchy Beanie, $12 at ASOS

Lily Jade Diaper Bag, $260 for another few days (then will shoot up to $335)

AG Stevie Cuffed Jeans, $188 at Anthro

Steve Madden Trooper Lace-Up Boot, $100 at Urban (I wear mine almost every day.  Grace, I have you to thank.  I know I owe you an article about these…how 'bout I just wear them in virtually every pic instead?)

Happy Monday!  (already?!?!)

Ankle Boots For Mamas Who Miss Uggs

DSC_9554

While I was home this summer, I wandered into Getz's…and came back out with these shoes.

I know!!

DSC_9469

They have a furry lining.  I was powerless to resist.

These have been the shoes I've reached for over and over again.   These are the shoes I wore on my first real walk, post-mastectomy…

Mom Street Style: Francine At Kindergarten Orientation

Sooo…Raines started kindergarten today.  It was…umm…OK.  I suppose.  The school has done a good job in breaking us in:  yesterday the kids went to class for only an hour while the principal talked to the parents, and last week we did a quick orientation (meet the teacher, see the classroom, etc.).

While we were at this orientation, Mike spotted Francine.  Like a total creepy-creepster he got this shot from his hip:

DSC_9886

I actually love that he does this.  Such a supportive guy.

My favorite part about this pic is the look on Francine's face.  The eyes speak volumes.  This picture perfectly sums up my first-born-goes-to-kindergarten experience.

I did end up introducing myself to Francine (how could I not??) and she is so impossibly chic.  Francine is from France, her daughters are both bilingual (Elia and Ondine…OMG I die over those names) and each time I've run into her she looks amazing.  Effortlessly chic, rather than just trendy.  Fashion as self-expression at it's best.  I could probably start a Tumblr called, "What Francine Wears to School Drop-Off" but that's creepier than Mike's hip shot, so I'll refrain.

DSC_9889

Of course everything she's wearing is from France (of course it is), so I don't have any helpful links for you…but as we continue to talk about trends over the next few weeks, I'll be keeping Francine's example in mind:

Trends are great…personal style is better.

Francine, thank you for being so gracious.  See you Friday.  :)

Fall Trend: Moto Jackets

DSC_0114

Mamas, it's time to talk Fall Trends!!  First up….the moto jacket.

I fully support running out and grabbing some badass leather moto jacket (this one is fabulous).  I mean…Miranda Kerr sports one, baby in tow, so there you go.  It's possible.  And many of you have previously confirmed that it is indeed easy to wipe spit-up off of a leather jacket.  There's no disputing that a leather moto jacket will seriously up your style game…forever.  They're classic.

My issue, however, with leather jackets in general is the same issue I have with most jackets in general:  I can't move my arms.  And nothing makes me crazier than when my arms are constricted – especially when cruising around with the kiddos.

Happily, there are a ton of amazingly chic, made-to-move, washable moto jackets on the market.  And if you treat your moto jacket like it's any old thing and throw it on over everything….BAM.  Lookin' good, Mama.

Here are a few ways I'm wearing my moto jacket (both playtime and date night):
