My New Favorite Swimsuit: The High-Neck

Going somewhere warm for Spring Break? We will be heading to the Oregon Coast, so I will not be sporting a swimsuit this time. Brrrr. But, we recently spent a week in South Florida with my parents and I discovered my new favorite swimsuit style – the high neck suit.

Why is this my new favorite style, you might ask? Because I don’t like to worry about pulling a Janet Jackson while picking up shells or playing with Sienna on the beach. I know, I’m not a risk taker. I’m ok with that.

But seriously, this is a great style for mamas as the girls stay nicely in place. The halter neck also gives them a little lift, which I’ll be the first to admit mine definitely need.

@krembdelakremb was sporting a high-neck style last year in one of her IG posts and it intrigued me. I bought this top above at the end of the summer wanting to try it out. I finally did and I LOVE it. (Sadly, my exact top is no where to be found, but this one is super similar).

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite bikinis, tanks and one-pieces all with high-necks below, just in time for Spring Break…

ThirdLove: Seriously Amazing Online Bra-Fitting

dsc_7938

Few things are more disheartening than trying to find a well-fitting bra.  I mean….OK:  there are worse things.  Swimsuit shopping, for example.  Root canals.  When you come home to find that the dog was sick everywhere (hang in there, Scotti!!).

But bra fitting deserves a place of honor on my Top Ten List of Things I Don’t Wanna Do.  I don’t have time to go into a store –  especially since most bra boutiques require advance appointments, a policy that completely defeats me – and I’m sick of the random guessing game that goes on when ordering online.  To further complicate matters, my post-mastectomy breasts have….settled (for lack of a better word), making them a completely different size than they were a year or two ago.  I’ve attempted to cope by switching to bralettes – XS, S, M, L – it *almost* doesn’t matter.  I’ll often order one of each, only to send back what doesn’t work.  Depending on the brand, my size varies wildly, so yes.  Feel free to come shop my bralette drawer – I’m sure I have at least one in your size.

The situation worsens for real bras with actual cup sizes.  I’m LOST.  Even many of the online bra-fit quizzes depend heavily on the size of your existing bra.  They don’t know what to do with my wide range of bralettes.  And I’ve yet to come across a choice in those fit quizzes for Used To Be Flat Chested, Then Had Kids And Giant Melons Sprung Forth For Nursing, Then Got Cancer and Cut Them Off, Then Plastic Surgeon Promised a B Cup But Was More Like a D Cup and Now They’ve Settled And I Have No Idea.

Where’s that checkbox?

So when ThirdLove reached out saying that they had developed an iPhone app which uses “patented technology to provide a simple virtual sizing process that calculates a woman’s precise measurements…” the nerd in me freaked out.

Allow me to translate:  You take pictures of yourself in ThirdLove’s app and they calculate your exact bra size.  And it works….perfectly.

Even better?  Based on the data they’ve collected, the ThirdLove Bra Engineers (I just made that up) realized that the bras themselves needed to change in order to provide a better fit.  So ThirdLove also introduced….HALF CUP SIZES.  I mean….cartwheels, people.  This is exciting stuff.

These Moms Found Their Favorite Swimsuit

one-piece-suits-for-moms-6

See that smug little grin?  It’s the grin of a Mama who has found the perfect swimsuit.  And Abigail really did – wait until you see it.  Even better?  Reader Elizabeth also wrote in with three seriously good options.  Let’s do this!

Abigail’s Find

I received this sweet note from Abigail – I found her perspective and words so uplifting, I hope you do too:

Hi Shana (and ladies!),
I can’t believe I am even doing this, but Scotti’s last swimsuit post inspired me. I love one of the comments saying that if your beautiful friends were quick to find fault with their pictures, (and here we all are commending them for their bravery and beauty) then maybe, just maybe we (I) look better than we give ourselves credit for. It is hard to look at myself objectively when all I am confronted with are photoshopped pictures showing perfectly tan, dimple free, toned bodies.
I commend you for taking REAL photographs, for letting us see REAL bodies-bodies you have worked hard for, bodies that have worked hard for you, bodies that have given birth, bodies that go to work everyday- and for letting us see that REALNESS.
Nicole-one of your commenters- recommended this swimsuit and on a whim I ordered it, skeptically (as I have a hate/tolerate relationship with swimsuits). Lo and behold when it arrives it’s…perfect. I feel fantastic in it and I don’t think that has ever happened before. I feel sexy for my husband, appropriate to chase around my Littles at the community pool, and comfortable in my own skin in this suit. Not an easy combination to find!!
So thank you Mom Edit team, for this community of support you have created and that you continue to nourish.
(So without further ado..and wishing I had a bit of liquid courage and a tan- ha!- here is me in the suit)

Athleta Swim (#DressingRoomSelfies…At Home)

IMG_8515
Hey hey…I got brave for y’all…swim suits!

I recently received Athleta’s catalog in the mail and LOVED some of their new swimwear. Many of the styles that I wanted to try were only available online, so I ordered some for home. I’ve been excited to check out their suits since many of you have said you love them. I agree! All of the suits seem well made. The fabric (Lycra Xtra Life) is supposed to last 5-10x longer than other swimwear fabrics and it does feel very sturdy, especially compared to the less expensive swimwear I generally go for. I tried bikinis, tankinis and rash guards – all mixed with a few different bottoms. Here’s what I found.

Bikinis

Palm Cove Bralette Bralette Bikini | Palm Cove Dolphin Short

I like this combo above a lot and these were the two pieces that made me want to try Athleta swimwear. Love this pairing for sports, beach walks/runs, and playing in the water with kiddos. I think the Palm Cove Bralette is a tiny bit long on me (it bunches a bit) but on mamas with a longer torso it would be perfect. It fits nice and securely but with lightly molded cups and underwires in it it doesn’t flatten your chest like a sports bra. Good. It’s hard to see here, but there are mesh stripes on the bottom part that are super cute, too. (Wearing size Small in both, for reference)

Full-Bust Sports Bras That Are Actually Cute (Nursing Sports Bras, too!)

Hi ladies! Still on a fitness kick over here, I’m psyched to write about a topic that’s quite literally near and dear to my heart: the search for a full-bust sports bra that’s actually cute and keeps the girls in check while running, zumba, hip hop yoga, or whatever activity you love. (Kind of surreal to hear the instructor calling out yoga poses over lyrics that would make your mama blush, but whatevs.) And by full-bust, we’re not talking C, D or even DD since those sizes are pretty easy to find from any major bra brand.   We’re talking sports bras that can accommodate for-real full bust sizes,  DDD and up.  Supermamas that have the energy to work out while pregnant or nursing? I found some seriously good nursing sports bras for you, too.

Nothing’s more demotivating than feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious while you’re working out. Show of hands, anyone resorted to double-bagging? I can attest that’s neither effective nor a good look. After baby #1 I found an awesome Moving Comfort style and even starting running.  Since it’s discontinued and also laughs in my face when I try to smoosh into it post-nursing baby #2, I’m shopping for myself, too and am only recommending bras I would actually buy.

Our Favorite Rashguard/ Bikini Combos!

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is going on right now blah blah blah, over it yet?

But yeah, as much as we’re genuinely LOVING this sneak peek into fall fashion, we’re not quite ready to let go of summer over here on The Mom Edit.

So, I interrupt this epic fall fashion sale to bring you: Rashguards.

And not just rashguards but some really great mix-and-match bikinis to go along with them. Now, I am not a bikini girl (and am insanely jealous of you sexy mama’s who are) but these rash guards give you the option to have the same sexy / flirty / surfer vibe without all that showing-your-skin business. And, they’re the perfect addition to play hard with the kids and protect yourself from the sun — two summer essentials in my book!

So, we’ve picked our top three rashguards, three bikini bottoms, and three bikini tops that all coordinate perfectly with each other. Pick any combination you want! It’s basically garanimals for grown-ups! Mix n’ match if you’re feeling adventurous or stick with our favorite pairings!  If you’re like us, you’re already seeing summer slip through your fingers.

Let’s start with our editor-in-chief…

LOFT Swim Review (We’ve Got #Dressingroomselfies and Reader Pics….)

loft-cutout-swim

Hey gang!  After SWOONING over a few swimsuits at LOFT, I ordered a couple to try on.  Just to see if they lived up to the hype.  (At least the hype I created IN MY MIND.)  It took me a bit to get these pics taken (the whole nipple reconstruction thing put a damper on things for a week or two), but as I was waiting for my poor boobs to heal, reader pics started pouring in (thanks, you guys!!).

So here we go.
