Old City, New Eyes (And An Almost-Fancy Outfit Idea)

“The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of Eternal Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another…”: I think Proust is advocating for staycations? Feeling inspired, I set off to discover my familiar old city with new eyes. Specifically, those of a toddler and kindergartener.

Boston was my old stomping ground through my crazy 20s, and while I was quite familiar with the divey pubs and late night pizza spots, kid-friendly (ok, if we’re being honest, “daytime”) activities weren’t on my radar. And much like me, the city has changed – so much – over the last decade. I headed in to get the lay of the land before taking the kiddos, since the ‘Big Dig’ rearranged streets and exits almost on the daily for years. I didn’t need to worry, though, the new Greenway area is the perfect jumping off spot.

Orange Crush: 2017 Spring Color Trend

Citrus fruits, traffic cones, pumpkin patches, Donald Trump’s skin tone –  just a few of the things that come to mind when I think about orange. “Fashion’s IT Color” or “Season’s Hottest Trend,” on the other hand are phrases I’m pretty sure no one has used since the ’70s in reference to orange, well until now.

Yup, orange is back and baby.. it’s come a long way since Woodstock.

Varying hues of orange dominated the runway during NYFW this year. From electric neon oranges to soft creamsicle pastels, from fiery sunset pallet of red oranges to warm cinnamon earth tone neutrals, and every shade of orange in between. Orange has never looked so appealing and wearable.

Still not sold?

I feel ya. I was the biggest orange non-believer of them all until a chance encounter with a rust cami in an Anthro fitting room turned my least favorite color into a complete wardrobe staple.

A Wool Coat + Sorels Warm Enough for a Blizzard? Yes We Can

sorel-waterproof-winter-boots

Last week we had winter coat + boot combos from coast to coast, now it’s New England’s turn!  Even though the weather is more November than late January here lately, I promise this wool Madewell City Grid coat and tall Sorel Joan of Arctic boots stands up well to blizzard conditions.

I mistakenly thought it would be cool to have my ‘spousetographer’ snap some blog pics in a snowstorm a few weeks ago – as it turns out, I stayed surprisingly warm and toasty no matter how frosty the atmosphere (literally and otherwise). For the sake of marital harmony, I got in touch with a self-professed local ‘momtographer’ this week when it was in the 40s and was still really comfortable. The boots were maybe overkill, but handled the chilly muck beautifully so they’ll be on repeat from October – April around here.

Soooo, only like 5 more months of winter!

Good news though – I found lots of similarly styled coats and Joan of Arctics that are on super sale right now so you still have time to enjoy them this winter.

AllSaints All Day Long: How I Style Mine

I just had a feeling you guys would like AllSaints just as much as I do. They do timeless wardrobe essentials with a modern twist. Plus, the quality and tailoring of their clothing is so SO good. I fell in love with the brand when they opened their first store in Chicago. At the time, I was still in college and had a difficult time parting with $10, so, the thought of purchasing something from them, even from the sales rack was laughable. Instead I walked around the store touching everything and whispering “someday my pretty, someday.”

Bummed you missed the sale? Never fret! Their sale is STILL going on. Select items are up to 50% off plus an additional 20% off of sale items at checkout using the code January.

Amanda’s Fall Wardrobe Edit (It’s All About the SHOES)

loeffler-randall-high-tops

Hi ladies! So I got a little excited about back to school shopping this year…for myself. Shopping for my kindergarten girl can be tricky since we have very different um, aesthetics? Her love of rainbow and animal print rivals mine for black and stripes. Living with her creative fashion choices must be rubbing off on me though, especially in the shoe department. While I’m not going to be pairing tutus and rain boots anytime soon these leopard high tops and silver booties are going to be on replay all fall. Want to see how I’m mixing interesting shoes with classic cooler weather pieces?

How To Wear White Right Now

white denim santin cami soft neutral outfit

Whites are trending big this season and neutrals have come so far from plain old tan. Soft, pastel hues like blush, dusty blue and mint have made their debut and become the new essentials to a well-rounded wardrobe. Neutrals have definitely garnered a bad rap over the years – deemed dull and boring, or overlooked in favor of more colorful trends. But when combined, neutrals can create an effortlessly chic and timeless look that’s surprisingly simple to pull off.

So if you’re looking for a refreshing spring style alternative….

AND

….you consider yourself a rebel, someone who prefers to live life on the edge, push limits, break rules and wear white any.day.of.the.year you please…

An End of Winter #MyEverydayEdit

The end of February and beginning of March is my least favorite time of the year. As my fellow Midwestern residents can attest, these weeks are particularly bleak and uninspiring. It’s still very much winter, the snow shows little sign of letting up, and there are no more fun holidays to look forward to.  The last thing I want to do is spend any more money on winter gear when Spring is so close, nor do I look forward to putting on the winter boots and coat I so excitedly purchased and wore only a few months ago.

So, I look to your #myeverydayedit Instagram posts to be inspired by fresh takes on styling. Here are the outfits I managed to pull together these last few weeks and also a collection of a just a few of your outfits that I found especially inspiring!

P.s. If you are new around here, #myeverydayedit is an Instagram tag we use at The Mom Edit to share our every day style. I promise, we are all nice gals and you should definitely consider joining in on the fun. (no pressure or anything)  You can find us at: @ShanaChristine@Scottiliz, @Camilledipoala, @Elletrain and @jessbobess.

So without further ado….

Reader Style: A Review of SuperGa and Spring Court Sneakers (Think Comfier Than Converse)

IMG_20140517_102854

I was delighted to get the following note from Allison:

Something I've been trying to find is the perfect cute sneaker.  I had a pair of Bensimons which were adorable, but honestly, not comfy to wear for very long as they were so flat and with little support.  Same goes for Converse.  But what I've tried out more recently are Superga and Spring Court … Italian and French tennis shoes.  They aren't quite as slim because they're a unisex style, but there is a lot more support.  The Superga is still pretty firm, but has a bit of arch support.  The Spring Court are my favourites because they have a removable insole that is really cushioned and comfy for playing or walking all day.

Seriously helpful, right??  So we email-chatted a bit, and she indulged me by sending over a close-up of the Supergas and Spring Courts:

IMG_20140516_150853

Here's a side by side of the superga and spring court (both eu size 39).  I'm actually planning to return the superga and get another pair of the spring courts as that insole is unbelievably comfy and now I'm spoiled! (The spring court shown is from a pair I have had for awhile… I actually dyed them because I wanted a darker blue than I could find in my size at the time, so they survived that plus a lot of play).

I love both of them (and now am obsessing over navy sneaks).  Allison, rock star that she is, THEN sent over pics of her next favorite sneaker trick:  swapping out the laces.

IMG_20140523_125343

Which do you prefer?  I honestly can't decide.

Bonus, they make them in kids sizes too (Velcro or laces) and they are even cuter on the small people.

Awwwwww….

Where To Buy?

So here's the downside:  finding Spring Court sneakers aren't easy.  Luisviaroma carries a few children's Spring Court styles, Yoox has an ever-changing selection of one or two Spring Court styles (currently only one), J.Crew used to carry them (but currently does not – I'll bet this changes eventually)…or you can go right to the french Spring Court website and order some.

Now Superga is a different story – you can buy Superga sneaks at Zappos.  Ordering ease alone may be why I pick Superga over Spring Courts.  Zappos even has my favorite camo Supergas, as well as chambray, glitter (which for some reason I am drawn to, magpie that I am), some cah-razy floral that is seriously awesome,  and then all of the classic colors as well.

Allison, thank you SO much for this amazing review!  I've been debating over another Converse purchase, but was holding off because – as you mentioned – they're not super comfortable (especially without socks in the summer).  So thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts and adorable pics!  This mama-community so appreciates it.

Allison's Outfit Deets (top pic)

I wore my sneakers today with bright blue tights, a thrifted skirt (h&m), a black tshirt (h&m), an old Gap cardigan, a dotted scarf from a trip to Barcelona, earrings by Darla Hesse, brooch by Fairyesque.  Bag is a Moop Paperback in grey (found this thanks to your blog and love it!) Sneakers by Spring Court naturally.

I usually try to wear sneakers with a skirt or dress as it feels much cuter than just with jeans.

Reader Style: Ankle-Wrap Flats For Short Mamas (And Triple Denim Awesomeness)

IMG_3426

I was delighted to get the following note from Laura:

Hi dear! So, as a short one under 5'4" I have trouble wearing many of these lovely ankle strap shoes, especially flats. Everything seems to cut off my already short legs and flats are already kinda hard to pull off. But. I found them. The cutest fancy flats ever that still flatter my short legs!

The key is that the ankle strap and heel are nude, elongating the leg, of course, but still creating that ankle interest. The toe is a pretty black leather. They have lovely toe cleavage, too. Love. Please share with my fellow short gals who may be running into the same issues I've had for YEARS of searching the perfect black flats.

Her flats are Isaac Mizrahi New York Evelyn flats, and come in black (as shown), white, red and gold.  All colors come with a nude ankle strap.  Laura, I seriously love these.  Thank you!

But let's look at the rest of her outfit (and that seriously cute baby).  I love the triple-denim play here (a triple header?  Ha, Ha…Ha I don't know baseball I shouldn't even pretend.  I'm sure my husband is banging his head on a desk somewhere.)

Street Style: Dresses Over Pants….TWICE

DSC_0034

So my sister-in-law, Jen, was in town with her boys a few weeks ago.  (Ugh, we needed mittens.  Sigh.)

Despite the weather, each day she wore some version of this kicky little outfit.

DSC_0037

wearing (similar items):

jacket: Military Jacket

sweatshirt: Forever 21 Boxy Marled Top

skirt: Forever 21 Ruffled Crochet Mini Skirt

denim: love the wash on the Big Star Mid-Rise Slim Bootcut in 15 Yr Cardova

boots: love these Frye look-alikes from the Vintage Shoe Co (and made in USA!)

scarf:  this scarf from Forever21 would be cute

One of the (many) things I love about Jen is she is totally and completely her own person.  She is uninfluenced by trends or labels, and is always unapologetically herself.

When I asked her about the dress-over-pants "uniform", she remarked "Oh this? Yes – it's my favorite look.  I got the idea from watching how little girls dress."

Um.  That's AWESOME.

Coincidentally, I received an email from Megan.  She writes:

I have been seeing the man repeller doing the whole dress over pants look and this is my suburban mom version.  It was super comfy and nice not to have to worry about my bum showing while sitting on my heels at story time.

HA!  And look how well this works:

Megan, I LOVE this look (and your email).  Someone should seriously start a tumblr: Suburban Mom Does Man-Repeller.

Thanks to you both for the inspiration!

MWAH!
