As much as I love gray and black, at this point in the year I’m in desperate need for some color. The longer days and patches of grass peeking through are encouragement that there’s a light at the end of the winter tunnel and I’m feeling festive. Since you can find me wearing leggings and a hoodie most days (it’s the perfect outfit for working from home and toddler wrangling!), I guess I’m the designated ‘Sporty Spice’ around here. Good thing, because I had so much fun browsing all the new spring athleisure and putting together fun color combos. Easiest way to add color: start with a pair of wild pants and pick one of the colors for a hoodie, like I did with these bright blue Zella live in leggings (aka party pants) and dusty pink Superdry hoodie. Unexpected and definitely a mood booster! Check out the other yummy new spring colors I found…

Hey ladies – I made a naptime escape for my local Nordstrom today to try on some athleisure picks and workwear options from the sale! What did I find? Lots of killer comfy leggings, cool jackets (including this amazing Zella moto puffer!), cashmere sweaters and leather jackets to swap out for blazers this fall.
My absolute favorite go-to, casual, everyday, let’s-get-going-let-me-just-grab-my-shoes shoe: Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars (in white). It’s weird, but I just bought my very first pair just over a year ago. I know, for someone so certain about it being her *IT* shoe, you’d think I would have bought them a long time ago. I’m not sure I knew just how much I would love them. Well, oh ho ho ho. Now I do. I am hooked. FO life.
I actually have great memories of my dad in the classic, white high tops, ray ban-ish sunglasses and jeans that were cut-off into almost too short shorts. Oh, yeh. The coolest. 1990’s. Whatcha gonna do? It was that and the Talking Heads on vinyl. We would all have serious jam dance parties in our living room on the regular. hmmm. My dad may actually have been the coolest. He really instilled in me a love and appreciation for good music (really good music)…and chucks. So while I didn’t own a pair until recently, my Converse roots run deep.
I wear them everywhere now. Ev-er-y-where. When I can’t think of what to wear, I start with chucks and go from there. This past weekend I took Mads on a special outing with mama (she has been needing some one-on-one attention. badly). We went downtown to Amelie’s where she picked out her usual “puff cream”. As we were sitting there she tells me, ” I don’t like thaaa cream, just the choc-let”…which begs the question…why didn’t you just order the all chocolate thing I pointed out to you that you so vehemently refused? Three year olds. Try talking sense to them. TRY.
Every once in a while I get an email from a reader asking me which pair of TOMS she should buy. Plain red? Something patterned? A neutral? I totally get it: with so many to choose from, it's overwhelming. But it's a tough question to answer….I mean it depends on your personal style, right? On what else you have in your closet?
Or perhaps I'm making this overly complicated. Because the truth is, in the last 4-5 years, there's one pair of TOMS I reach for the most.
With plain tees, graphic tops, patterns, stripes…..I reach for a pair of patterned TOMS, chosen simply because I liked the pattern.
Only good vibes, man.
Not because they fixed some perceived hole in my closet or because I thought they'd match something in particular, but simply because I liked them. And that fact (I like 'em) has given them more longevity than I expected.
TOMS may not be the height of style…in fact, I can think of footwear for each of these outfits that would probably look better….but how many pairs of shoes let you do this?
R rolls his eyes at me, but not before I see him bite back a smile. Little Pax, however, takes one look at my twirling and shrieks, "MOM! I WUV YOUS DANCE!!"
Game, set, match. Well played, TOMS.
sweatshirt: Hurley…love this seriously cool graphic sweatshirt at Urban Outfitters
denim: AG jeans (on sale!)
TOMS: old….but oooo tye-dyed TOMS
scarf: Yana Kapeli Infinity Nursing Scarf (more on this later)
tee: French Connection t-shirt (mine is sold out, this is similar)
shorts: A&F…but I have my eye on Rag & Bone's denim cut-offs
TOMS: old…but the gray chevron print TOMS are pretty awesome
Hunh. Jill, this camo vest has been on my mind lately. Initially, when I first read your email, I didn't love it…but…well…it's growing on me. The vest is growing on me! And I always like a challenge. So: I thought I'd try styling it up for a final verdict. And you know what? I think this vest could work!
Poochy mamas, rejoice! This season has a ton of adorable, pooch-hiding tops in store…and the best news? Not an empire-waist in sight!
Outfit 1 – Playing at the Park
I tried on the BB Dakota top. It's like a strange, but sophisticated hoodie that is crazy-comfortable and totally pooch-hiding. So comfy, in fact, it could easily double as loungewear with these. Nursing girls, this top easily pulls down for nursing access.

Winter, I'm done with you. I want Spring. I want bright flowers peeking from the ground, I want sunny skies and 70+ temps. I want bare arms. I want color.
Chances are, I'm stuck with several more weeks of cold (while Denver is having a warm spell now, March always breaks my heart)…so in lieu of warm winds and swapping my snowboots for sandals, I'm really feeling brights. Specifically brightly colored denim. (Specifically the pair of coral red Gap skinnies M found on the clearance rack for under $20. But I won't. I promised. Avoiding "twinsies!!" is becoming harder and harder for us.)
So if you'd like to add a little pop of color, keep reading. I found a few gorgeous pics for inspiration, and as always, we play around with making them oh-so-mom-friendly.
Bright Denim + Dark Neutrals
I love Vanessa Jackman's pic from London's Fashion Week. While black and yellow can be fraught with peril (what goes 'buzz buzz'?), Shu Pei (pictured) pulls it off perfectly.
Ummmm…yeah. We love plaid. For the last month, we've done a weekly feature on the various ways to rock a plaid shirt. If you missed it, check out these articles:
But we're not the only ones loving the plaid. To finish up this series, I found some great sources of inspiration from a few very talented fashion bloggers. Not only are their looks totally fresh and fun, but they are all mom-friendly.
We received several comments from yesterday's post regarding LOFT's fabulous orange windbreaker. Specifically, reader Dusti wanted to know:
"I'm thinking of getting the orange jacket, but I am wondering how to best style it with skinnies? I'd like to make it a staple for the spring…what are your thoughts of a few options what to wear under it?"
Ummmm…it just so happens that I bought that very windbreaker, and have been wearing it non-stop. (Am I the only one who does that? Wears a new item for several days straight?)
Here's a few pics from the last few days….
