To say that the “Amazon Coat” has been WILDY popular is actually an understatement. I don’t know if I’ve ever personally witnessed a singular winter outwear piece that has taken over sidewalks, playgrounds and ice skating rinks the way this one thickened down coat has. It’s EVERYWHERE! And if you’re set on having it, it’s still available and is now offered in a fun red and brand new metallic color as well.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, I’m referring to the Orolay Thickened Down Jacket, which due to its success on Amazon is now ubiquitously referred to as the “Amazon Coat”. I did a review on “THE” coat last year and ended up deciding it wasn’t for me. This year, I’ve been looking for alternatives.
On-Trend: 12 Warm Coats Like The Amazon Orolay Jacket
You guys know I love my Uniqlo Puffer, and I’m a big fan of the Boden puffers, too (read more about both here), but there IS something that keeps me thinking back to that silly Orolay coat on Amazon…I guess that’s why so many people have it. It’s a good price point, it’s warm, it’s comfortable, it has interesting details, and the oversized look is cool, current, and a playful change from your everyday basic puffer. Laura has been rocking hers and looks so amazing in it.
The TME Philly team challenged me to find 10 (I actually found 12!) good alternatives to the “Amazon Coat” for those of you who have also decided this coat isn’t the one for you. Maybe too many people on your playground are already wearing it, or maybe you don’t like the idea of wearing an “it” coat. Maybe it has too many zippers for you, maybe you were looking for plus sizing, or maybe you’re looking for something that’s made with more sustainable materials or a winter coat not from Amazon. I’ve got ALL the options.

Hope everyone has found (or soon finds) their perfect puffer coat…it’s getting COLD at least here in Philly! I’m obviously a little obsessed with the challenge of finding ALL the good puffers, so don’t be surprised if I keep going with this theme. Shout it out if there are other brands you want us to look at this winter!
I have an Abercrombie puffer coat and it is really warm. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how good it is. I even wore it tailgating at 10am in State College this past weekend and it kept me warm! I definitely recommend Abercrombie coats. Also, that red Mango coat is so good! I love it. This, though, is the puffer coat of my dreams. But, as I have a really warm puffer coat already, I can’t figure out a way to justify the $230 price tag. So for know, I will just admire it from afar. Sigh…
Elizabeth! That Universal Standard coat would look amazing on you.Santa? I knew Abercrombie coats had gotten really good, but I was super impressed with Mango’s selection too. So cute and prices weren’t terrible.
What size are you wearing in the jcrew puffer? I’m eying the yellow.
I’m wearing a small. The xs fit, but I liked the more oversized look and room for layers underneath. If your’e going to wear it cinched, though, I would maybe go with a smaller size. Looked cuter more fitted when cinched. I’m definitely eyeing the yellow too…we can be twins! 🙂
I bought this Free People puffer a few weeks ago and love it. It has this absurdly oversized look that is really cool and it is very warm. For those looking for a tailored look, this is not that, but if you want an edgy look that is more interesting, it’s awesome. https://m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/free-people-hailey-hooded-puffer-jacket/5507429/full?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&breadcrumb=Home%2FAll%20Results&color=wine
Real talk from anyone not on the East Coast: I read a ton of articles last year about The Coat, but never saw it IRL. And I live in MN, where it gets extremely cold, and stays cold throughout March! I got my first live sighting last week, and its not even cold here yet (I don’t consider it cold until it’s in the 20s). Any other Midwesterners thinking it’s a trend that just never made it here?
I live in Chicagoland, and I have seen several sightings in the ‘burbs (including a little girl wearing the mini version!). I suspect there would be more in downtown Chicago. However, Canada Goose parkas seem to reign supreme in my area.
