Everyone’s Favorite Go-To: The Gray Top

Ok, gray tops may not be the boldest statement …but…we all love them. They’re such a closet staple when it comes to throw-on-and-go or, more importantly,  throw-on-and-don’t-go. Amiright?

Cozy gray tops with a bit of detail beyond your basic tee? SHUT UP. Easiest closet piece hands down. I’ve rounded up some current great finds that may not take you to your fanciest event but will get you through the winter for every other occasion. It’s ok. We’re stocking up, too. #cozyeverything

Oh wait. But first! First let’s talk about a couple of styling options I like to use to help take our go-to top to the next level.

Styling Suggestions To Take Gray Up a Notch

Essentially, we love gray tops because they go with everything. BUT, I find the way I love them best and the way to bump their styling up a bit is to follow through with a couple easy tips.

The Monochromatic Look

Depending on the value of the gray top in question (ie. how light or dark the gray is) determines which color jeans compliment it best. I love sticking with a medium or light wash jean for those lighter gray tops and a darker wash jean for the darker grays. To keep the look on point wear a similar light or dark shoe (sneaker, boot, etc.)

This idea works beautifully with gray jeans, too, and keeps the outfit cool and monochromatic. If you can pull off white jeans, that’s also a gorgeous option. Think white sneakers and a camel overcoat. Bam. So fashion-y.

Top – Gibson Twist Front Cozy Fleece Pullover – I’ve gotten SO much wear out of this top that I bought last winter. I’m so glad it’s still in stock. It’s amazingly cozy. It runs a little big in the body though so you might size down, but the arms and shoulders are TTS. Wearing Medium Petite (boxy in the body but don’t think I’d size down because of the arms.)

Jeans (similar) – LOFT Modern Skinny Jeans in Destructed Light Indigo – LOFT has just been impressing me over the last year or so and their jeans are great. I find they run TTS. Love the wash on these.

Boots – Marc Fisher Yommi Chelsea Boot – I didn’t realize how much I’d wear a taupe bootie until I got one. These are more winter friendly than the pair I have on. SO cute.

Contrast Chic

I do wear a ton of black jeans and to make my gray tops work well in this situation I tend to choose sleeker accessories, like a dark black ankle boot, a black moto jacket, or black over-the-knee boots. I kind of pretend my top is black and wear what I would wear with a chic all-black look. This helps to dress up even the coziest gray top a little, so people don’t know that you slept in it the night before. What? I mean…I never do that.

Jeans – Madewell Cali Demi Boot – These are some of my newest favorites. They’re a demi boot cut aka cropped flare and I adore them. They’re great over a sock boot or chelsea boot and great with flats and mules. They’re so comfy and a nice addition to all my skinny jeans.

Boots – Kendall + Kylie Finley Boot – THESE are fabulous. I was looking for a dressy black boot and these are killer. The pointed toe and slim ankle are just so flattering and badass. I love them.

  1. Thanks! i love these ideas! You always make everything look sooo good! Every time i try on a grey top in the store, i feel blah and don’t buy it. hmm, i’ll give it another try, i am inspired!

    • Colleen Strahs on

Not all grays are for everyone. I have pale/fair skin, and light gray is a “blah” color for me– it washes me out. I do much better with a dark charcoal. Trying a different shade of gray might help?

  2. Hi, Laura! I like where that top hits you at the waist, and you’re under 5’5″, no? Did you get the regular or petite size? Does the top shrink at all? Thank you!

    • My question is similar – it looks like it hits perfectly on you, but the pic on the Nordies website of this item makes it look a ton longer in back (and in the side view pic on model, with the twist in the front, it actually looks like it bulks up the waist/reads maternity instead of a subtle camouflage, so I’m confused…

      • I think she said in a previous post that she bought the petite. It looks like the petite length to me. I have petite and regular, and I like the fit of each for different purposes. I am 5’1” and the petite hits me right at the top of the hip. With the twist that means that there would be a little space between the knot and my jeans if I wasn’t wearing high-waist pants or leggings. The regular hits a lot lower on me, enough for me to feel like my butt and bits are mostly covered while wearing leggings. I love the fit and think it is flattering on my post-3-pregnancy body. The side view might add if you are very skinny (like the model) but is flattering and camouflaging if you have any curves.

    • Guys. DOH! I forgot to mention size. I’ll update the post, but yes, I’m wearing a Medium Petite here. I generally size up when I go to petite sizing but I think the Small Petite would have been less boxy in the body. I agree the length is perfect though!

  3. All the comments are really helpful! When you posted this top a while back, I really loved it then too. I found something similar at Gap Factory and thought, WOW, a grey knotted top for less than half the price! Then at the time, I didn’t realize that it didn’t look that great on me because of the proportions. I am 5’2, and the top was longer. It accentuated my mid area in a weird way. I’ll keep proportions in mind from now on. I’m always blinded by initial “ohh this is so cute!”. You wear it perfectly! This posts really helps, thanks again!.
