The Matching Set: How to Wear the Perfect Capsule Wardrobe for Vacation

There is something I do not like doing — trying to figure out what to wear and what to pack for a vacation. It doesn’t matter if it’s for four days or two weeks. I really agonize over the process of putting together “perfect outfits” for every day we are away.

UGH. Why??? I do it to myself.

I’ve been trying to get smarter with how I pack, and also how I think about vacation outfits. It doesn’t need to be so complicated and over-thought. Anyone else do this? No matter what I’m putting an outfit together for, I always find that the less I think about it…the better the entire look is (and my mood, if we’re being honest).

That’s why I got excited and inspired by the Co-ord/Matching Set trend, which has come right back around (I have a set from a couple of years ago)…and well, HELLO. It has returned in full force, almost like it gained some kick-ass confidence and DGAF this time around. I love it.

I have decided that this is the simple, yet exciting and FUN answer to my packing dilemma for summer vacations. I can just build off of the set and mix it up to create several different outfits. Don’t believe me? Keep on scrolling, because I did the leg work to convince you. 😉

Not one of these outfits felt blasé or just okay. The print alone, in the top and shorts, made every single look feel more interesting and exciting. You may also have noticed that I only wore two different styles of shoes, two different accessories and a few different bags (oh, and of course sunglasses).

Mama can’t hate that simplicity.

outfit details

floral top: BP. Linen Blend Ruffle Sleeve Top (TTS, wearing S) – Gorgeous yellow. Incredibly comfortable.

floral shorts: BP. Print Linen Blend Shorts (TTS-ish, but maybe on the larger side) – I could have gotten an XS, I think, but they still were comfortable on me in a Small.

sandals: Birkenstock Mayari (Stone color, wearing size 40) – I wasn’t sure about what size to go with, being a solid 9.5. I fit perfectly in a size 40.

mules: Lewit Cara Mule (Fits small) – I had to go up a whole size. I think it’s because of the pointy toe. These are so wonderful, though. Soft leather and very pretty on. On sale right now for under $100, BTW!

tank top: FP Dani Tank (TTS, wearing S) – Comfortable, loose, and cuts low under arms…definitely have to wear a bralette or pretty bra underneath (or even a sports bra that you don’t mind showing off). The back is fun for scrappy bralettes, though.

denim: EVERLANE High-Rise Skinny (Mid blue, TTS) – Great everyday jean, for those of you who love a high-rise. I wasn’t sure about them at first, but these have really grown on me!

cut off shorts: Levi’s 501 Distressed Cut-off Jeans (TTS, Hotline Bling) – My FAVORITE SHORTS right now. You can check them out in my Levi’s Shorts Round-up, FYI. Also available @ Levi’s.

large straw bag: French Baskets Market Bag – Love this Etsy shop, bags made in Morocco. I have been using it as a pool bag, and it has been awesome – fits three towels, diapers, water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, etc.

round straw bag: French Baskets Fringe Bag – Love the added leather fringe.

backpack: Rebecca Minkoff Fringe Julian Backpack (white) – Ugh. I love this bag. So. Much. I have one in dark navy, but wanted a brighter, more fresh option for spring & summer. This one is so good.

aviator sunglasses: Polarized Aviators from Amazon – Great quality for a cheap pair.

pink sunglasses: AE sunglasses…that are no longer available, but they do have these Quay Paradiso Sunglasses, which look incredibly cool.

necklace: Baublebar Aimee Layered Necklace (wearing silver) – I have been wearing this all the time…perfect necklace for those of you who don’t accessorize a lot, but wish you would (or could). Also available at Nordstrom.

Now, if I could only figure out a way to pack the kids’ and husband’s stuff all in one suitcase…

ha.

  1. This is soooo practical – I love this post! And, timely, too, as I’m starting to think of my wardrobe for an upcoming 5 days in San Diego. You and Shana have the greatest style. Thanks for sharing.

  2. I love this, bought the set immediately! I am also going to San Diego soon, and for sure will take for vacay!

  3. This post is so timely. I leave for a 2 week vaca on Friday and have been setting out “outfits” since Sunday. You can’t imagine how many times I’ve switched out pieces for others. I always end up packing way more than I need because of the “what if” moments that I make up in my head. I love this outfit and all of the different ways you styled it – so simple but looks put together and comfortable. This is what I need more of!

  4. Would love to see more mom-practical matching sets like this styled. I’ve been on the hunt for a matching set (or 12) for a few weeks, but so many of them are tiny crop tops with boho skirts — or really pajama-like.

  5. THIS!!! I don’t do cropped. no no. Need a good drape and more fabric than most of those examples.

I love the post though! And seeing the styles, esp with idea for travel, is perfect.

But do you then wash the top out every night ? Especially in the heat, I sweat too much to re-wear tops like this. Practical at home for a small/capsule wardrobe though!
