Peplum Tops are Back: This is How I Wear Them Now

Peplum tops? Remember when you couldn’t go into a store without seeing at least 100 of them? I had my fair share of them when they first came into the picture in 2012, but I hadn’t had one for years until now. This year I saw them making a comeback…in a different way. They are more interesting and relaxed. Some are shorter, which I love; a lot have these pretty hem ruffles; and others are ribbed or smocked. What I love the most is how casual they have become, and that they can be styled easily with comfy jeans and shoes for a beautiful yet laid-back outfit.

When I started thinking of a way to style them, I immediately went for high-rise jeans. If you follow me on Instagram (@theunbosom) you probably know that despite my soft stomach situation I like to wear my high-rise jeans with bodysuits, slightly cropped tops, or shirts tucked in. That’s part of my style, I don’t really wear things untucked or long tops over. And….I totally know that others don’t either. So, when I saw all these cute peplums, I immediately pictured them with high-rise jeans. It’s a double win because you get the slimming a high-rise provides, but also the forgiving peplum falling on your hips

So, I planned a mini-date with my oldest boy close to where my husband was working that day. I took three different peplum tops with me to change into and take pics of each. It was messy and tiring and sweaty. It was HOT. My almost 5-year-old wasn’t in his best mood, husband/photographer forgot he had a call at that time….so let’s say a lot of stress was involved. And yeah, I ended up getting angry with my husband, yelling at my son and driving back home, crying. Oh God, the magic of pictures that only tell a few seconds of the story. This blogger thing is not as glamorous as it may seem.

1. Relaxed Peplum with a Special Detail

Top – Cable Stitch Ribbed Peplum Tank in Rose color – Wearing XS. Love how feminine yet relaxed this top is. If you’re not into pink, it’s also available in white or navy.

Jeans – Levi’s Wedgie Icon Selvedge Jeans C/O – Wearing 24. My most complimented jeans the past few days. If you’ve followed my Levi’s posts, you know I usually wear 25, however this time I went down a size, which was incredibly tight at first, but after the break-in they were amazing. So if you want more fitted, size down, and if you want more of a girlfriend look, get regular size.

Shoes – Marc Fisher Oria platform sandals C/O – TTS. MOST.COMFORTABLE.SANDALS I’ve ever owned. I can literally run in them. I tested them when I had to run to my car before I got a ticket. I started running and was like “WOW, I can run in these!!” Also, wore them to the zoo this week and no complaints. They are stylish as well, so WIN, WIN.

Choker – Benevolence Choker with beaded curb chain – 13″ to 15″ adjustable. Pretty, delicate choker. If you follow me on Instagram Stories you may have seen it every day over the past two weeks. Gold and silver available.

Necklace – Kate Spade New York Initial Pendant Necklace – 18″ adjustable, too. Choose the initial you want and layer with shorter necklaces. 14K brass. Also available in silver here.

Bag – Rattan Nation Woven Rattan bag C/O (similar) – Mine sold out before I could post it, but you can check to see if it comes back here. I honestly love that I can fit a lot of things in there. Warning about these bags (I had no idea): they smell like smoked meat, and that is because they actually have to be smoked for the material to get that beautiful color. I let mine air out for a few days and used some Febreeze. I thought it was only this brand, but I was at Madewell recently and theirs had that smell too. If you’re into the round ones, get it here. I just wanted a different shape than the circular style that everybody seems to have.

2. Peplum with Hem Ruffle

Top – Cupcakes and Cashmere Beverli Eyelet Peplum top – Wearing XS. Summer without eyelet pieces is not summer, right? Love that it isn’t too long or too short. I created a pretty feminine silhouette without being constricted. The back is smocked as you can see. Swap out the sandals with heels and you’re ready for girls’ night out or date night. Available in Poppy red too.

Jeans – Levi’s Wedgie Icon Selvedge Jeans – Wearing 24. My most complimented jeans the past few days. If you’ve followed my Levi’s posts you know I usually wear 25, however this time I went down a size which was incredibly tight at first, but after the break-in they were amazing. So if you want more fitted, size down, and if you want more of a girlfriend look, get regular size.

Shoes – Soludos Knotted slides – Got them last year and I love them. Buttery soft leather that leave ZERO blisters. Super comfortable and come in linen and more colors.

Earrings – BohemianDangle Earrings Tear drop multi color – I have the teal color, and there’s also a navy color, which means they have only a few navy beads. Lightweight and pretty earrings to give a little bit of color to more neutral outfits. Wearing them right now with jeans, a black tank and blush sneakers.

Bag – Rattan Nation Woven Rattan bag (similar) – Mine sold out before I could post it, but you can check to see if it comes back here. I honestly love that I can fit a lot of things in there. 3. Relaxed Ruffle

Top – Lucky Brand Embroidered Peplum top – Wearing XS. SO this top is long-sleeved but 100% viscose, which means it’s breathable. I love the very relaxed peplum and delicate embroidery….comes in red too. Wear with jeans or shorts for a pretty look without too much thought.

Jeans – Levi’s Wedgie Icon Selvedge Jeans – Wearing 24. My most complimented jeans the past few days. If you’ve followed my Levi’s posts, you know I usually wear 25, however this time I went down a size, which was incredibly tight at first, but after the break-in, they were amazing. Are you ready to rock a good peplum? I should mention that I totally love them with high-rise shorts. I know not everybody can wear jeans. I can get along with them some days here in NY.

  1. Loving this look! I’ve been trying to update my usual jeans/tee combo, but the shirts I’ve been picking are too boxy. I like these relaxed peplums and think they’re going to be the perfect feminine update to my momiform.
