The 11 Beauty Essentials You Need for Summer

Summertime beauty can be tricky – we get it. When the AC is limited (or non-existent) and you feel like your makeup has already melted off your face before you’re even out the door, there are plenty of products out there to fix that. It’s always a good idea to tweak your makeup and beauty routine for the changing seasons because it can make all the difference.

I’ve pulled together the 11 things I literally can’t live without when the temps rise. From sweat and water-proof foundation to tamers for that ungodly hair frizz and more, here are my top picks for summer beauty:

Hylamide Ha Blur

This stuff is SERIOUSLY amazing.  It’s a “hyaluronic-based blurring surface finisher,” (fancy for primer) that you can mix WITH foundation or layer over OR under it.  I prefer layering it under my makeup, myself, but it will work all three ways and your makeup will.  Not.  Budge.

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20

For when you want just a little coverage, this tinted moisturizer is the “perfect blend of skincare and makeup.”  It hydrates (without being super slick and shiny), protects from both UVB/UVA rays and blends imperfections without covering up your skin.  (My favorite color is “sand,” and I love layering it over Laura Mercier’s foundation primer in “radiance” when I want a little extra glow.)

Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream With SPF 50+

So this is the makeup I wore the entire time I was in North Carolina.  My face didn’t burn once, despite not wearing any other sunscreen.  It is full coverage, so if you like lighter coverage this may not be for you.  But . . . this stuff never creases or cracks, hydrates your skin, camouflages dark spots (yasssss), protects from UVA/UVB rays and is infused with an anti-aging serum that makes your skin look better immediately and over time.

ILIA Multi-Stick

I’ve been searching for a lip and cheek tint that actually works for both lips and cheeks.  This multi-stick honestly looks and feels good on both lips and cheeks and is formulated without harsh chemicals or toxins.  (It contains 72% organic ingredients, is cruelty-free and has earned Sephora’s Clean Beauty Products seal.) I love it because it blends so easily into skin and looks more natural than powders for that summer glow.

Benefit Sun Beam

Years have gone by, and this is still my favorite highlighter for summer.  I try to stay away from heavy powders or creams when it gets really hot and this highlighter has a lighter consistency that’s perfect for adding a bit of glow.  You only need the teensiest tiniest bit dabbed on your cheekbones (and down the bridge of your nose if you’re feeling fancy) for a gorgeous back-from-vacation radiance.

CliniqueFIT Workout 24-Hr Mascara

In lieu of my usual false lashes, I’ve been searching for a mascara that won’t smudge or flake at ALL.  To test out this new formula, I wore it to the beach, laying out, in the rain (even to bed) . . . and it stayed without smudging underneath my eyes.  (Ok, it smudged a little overnight, but we all know we’re supposed to remove it before bed, right?)  I was impressed by the staying power, if not as much with the length or volume it added.  If you want just a little bit of definition and color without having to worry about smudges, this is for you.  (I recommend layering it over Tightline Waterproof Full Lash Mascara Primer from IT cosmetics for more drama that will stay PUT.)

BY TERRY Ombre Color-Fix Cream Shadow | By Terry Stylo Blackstar

I picked these up with Shana in mind.  She’s always looking for the easiest way to apply a smokey eye that will last.  These two shadow sticks can be worn alone or combined and are gorgeous either way.  Super easy to blend and won’t budge once applied (and dried).

Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist

I hate applying makeup and then having to slather on sunscreen over it.  I can layer it underneath, but then forget reapplying.  This stuff makes it easy.  It’s a setting spray that locks in your makeup, controls natural oils AND, most importantly, protects from UVA/UVB rays.  Reapply over and over again without messing up your makeup.  (The spray makes it easy to get sunscreen everywhere you need without having to rub it in too.)

Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder Tres Invisible Dry Shampoo with French Pink Clay

To me, dry shampoo is an absolute must year-round, but especially during the summer.  This one comes with UV filters to prevent the damaging and drying effects of the sun.  This one doesn’t show up white on dark hair and can also be used as a volumizer (on both dirty or clean hair).

Living Proof No-Frizz Instant De-Frizzer

Ever since I cut my hair short and can’t put it up (my usual solution to frizzy hair), I’ve been SO happy I found this product.  It’s a dry conditioner to use between washes that protects from UV rays and smooths and softens hair.  (I’ve been really happy with everything from Living Proof’s No Frizz line, to be honest.)

Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray

Sweat, heat, sun, rain . . . this setting spray protects from all of it and keeps your makeup on soooo much longer.  I use this on all of my brides and get so many comments about how long their makeup lasted.  This is a great product to have year-round, but especially during these hot months.

XOXO,

Great post as always, BUT the third of the three sunscreens you recommend (supergoop) contains Ocinoxate, a sunscreen ingredient that Hawaii has banned because may be damaging coral reefs. Oxybenzone gets more publicity but we all need to be aware of using either substance because if it’s on our bodies, it goes into our wastewater, and eventually lands in the the ocean. Love you guys and this comment is meant to be educational, not critical.

  2. I love all of these recommendations, thank you! The Hylamide Blur…tell me, does it sit in creases at all? That, plus the SuperGoop mist, are in my cart as I type.

I can vouch for the Laura Mercier and IT products as well. Also, the IT illuminating concealer is another winner. Highly pigmented so you only use a teeny bit and it won’t budge. Other item I really enjoy…Wander Mascara. It’s not waterproof or anything like that, but it really, really lasts, yet washes off very easily.

  3. I am loving the SuperGoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40! It goes on completely clear and leaves a soft finish. It also acts as a primer if you are using makeup over it. I like NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer for a light-medium coverage that applies easily with your fingers.

I love you guys (maybe a little too much for my bank account, lol). In this post, I was happy to see that many of the products do not contain concerning ingredients like chemical sunscreens and parabens. I have been working hard to switch to products with cleaner ingredients and I recently fell in love with Ever skincare. They have an amazing mineral sunscreen/tinted moisturizer called Ever Daylight Radiance SPF 32 that delivers great sun protection and leaves my skin glowing! And it comes in 6 different tints. I recently joined the company as a seller because I love it so much, so I may be a bit biased! Worth a look though, I think! 😊 https://www.everskin.com/with/rebeccaconahan/products/377-daylight?style=2144

Thanks, TME, for your awesome content!😘
