What To Wear To A Dinner Party With Friends

My teammates may not realize it, but I do, in fact, love an occasion to dress up. Now, we may have some differing opinions on what dressing up means because I said “let me do a New Year’s Eve outfit where I wear coated jeans” and Shana said “I don’t wanna see anything NYE unless sequins are involved.” Haha. But, being the costume party fan I am, I love a chance to get out of my rain-friendly boots, jeans and sweatshirt, and hop into something fun…every once in a while. It may not happen often you guys, but when it does, this time of year, it usually includes some kind of velvet. And I threw in some leather pants and faux fur for good measure.

Our 12 Days of Holiday Style wouldn't be complete without getting glam for that annual dinner party with friends. Leather + faux fur + velvet...So good.

My favorite thing is to bring a bottle of wine or bubbly, and a wine glass marker. I write our message on the bottle and gift the marker for use at the party to keep everyone’s glasses straight. A sparkly ornament tied on also helps finish off the gift.

Outfit Details

Velvet Cami – The color of this cami is pretty much the color I want everything in right now. Emerald meets a hint of teal in the best most luxurious way. Size up. Wearing a Medium.

Cropped Leather Pants (faux leather here) – Mine are my mom’s from the 90’s that she passed down to me recently…and that I hacked off right before this shoot. I know. I’m seriously nuts. But it worked out great and made them much more modern! (Just be sure to use super-sharp scissors on leather.) Most of the faux and leather pants I’m seeing right now are this cropped style. I LOVE it for showing off great shoes. Real leather is SO soft, comfy and flattering, but faux can be just as statement-making and easier on the wallet, especially for this time of year. But I plan on now wearing these leather babes with my high tops and tees when I’m not headed to a party.

Leopard Heels  – The only pair of pumps I have right now. I know. But they go with everything. *Update: here is a lower heeled, but more similar pair!

Overcoat – This is just a closet staple that makes anything more chic. I tried some faux fur jackets on with this outfit and they were fine, but this stepped it up a notch, plus it makes a great silhouette with the cropped pant. Proportion play is always one of our favs here! My coat is a lighter weight, which I like, but a wool version would be much warmer this time of year. I do think something with a little drape is really versatile though.

Bag – Cute, fun and sparkly! Holds my wallet, phone, lipstick and keys, and is super affordable!

Faux Fur Scarf – This is such a versatile item to have around the holidays. You may remember it last year from my leather jumpsuit outfit.

Earrings – I love Express for costume jewelry. Mine are from last season, but the ones linked are super-cute and a similar shape.

Do you have a standing holiday party every year? My friend Brenda loves hosting one annually, and it’s always a blast. Most of us dress up for it, and it’s honestly one of the few times a year I have an event where I can get a little fancy. We have cocktails and appetizers and music, and it makes me think of all those holiday scenes from Christmas movies and I love it. Happy party month, friends! Love and light to you.
