Need An Alternative To Jeans This Spring? Yellow Pants.

I’ll be the first to admit, I wear jeans 95% of the time. I love jeans. I love finding the right jeans for every occasion. I love trying on jeans. But even I, self-proclaimed queen of jeans, want to mix it up every once in a while, ya know?

I was recently searching for stuff to take to Florida for our trip, and I ran across these mustard pants at Free People. They were honestly a “can I figure these out” kind of purchase, and I wasn’t quite sure, but I’ve always loved this color. The sweater and boots were also recent finds, and the three came together into my current favorite ensemble that isn’t jeans. I think I was craving a pop of color, and this warm honey color has always been an interesting shade to me. I’m forever drawn to it. I think right now it’s because I’m craving sunshine…from the 70’s. I don’t know, but I love these pants. (They are a bit more orange/rust/caramel in person, btw).

Mustard yellow — the warm neutral we're obsessed with right now — is an oh-so-needed alternative to jeans. THIS pop of color is the new on-trend go-to.

My Obsession With These Mustard Yellow Pants

I’m not the only one either, because I searched for mustard yellow/ caramel colored pants and all the options came up. I think when venturing into styling an unexpected color, soft neutrals always work well. This oatmeal sweater has a similar warm tone to the pants. A black sweater would also work well though, to set off the pretty color. And look how pretty it is next to Sienna’s navy coat? YES. Just ask the team about my obsession with muted, rich color pairings right now. I’ve been driving them all crazy. Stay tuned for more posts about my favorite palettes, and I’ll drive y’all crazy, too!

CoatOrolay “The Amazon Coat” – You may have heard about this from Linzi’s review or seen it a lot if you follow me on Instagram (@laurajansenstyle). (You can also follow the coat on Instagram, seriously). I love this thing. The fit is flattering for an oversized coat, and it is seriously cozy. The hood is amazing and has been perfect in the blustery cold, snow and rain we’ve had lately. Wearing a Small. It comes in a few other great neutral colors.

Sweater – Madewell Inland Turtleneck Sweater – Wearing a Small. SO cozy and soft and the perfect soft shade to complement with warm tones like this mustard. Also goes well with black. Haha. I’m wearing this sweater every other day right now.

Pants – Free People Textured Harem Pants – Wearing my regular size 4. Reviews say they run big, but I disagree. They have a high waist and a yoke. While they stretch a bit with wear, my regular size fits great.

Boots – Swedish Hasbeens Zip It Emy – My new favorite clog boot. Size up. Wearing a 39 (typically a US 8) See my full review here.

MittensIsotoner Sherpa Lined Mittens (similar) – The warmest, softest mittens ever. Same brand as mine, just slightly different pattern. I’m also eyeing these with the flip-top. I think I’ll only buy Isotoner mittens from now on!

Would you give a bold color like this a try? I’ll admit, for many it’s easier to wear bottoms in this shade than a top. It so depends on your coloring and the exact shade, of course. I saw a girl at Free People the other day wearing a great rust-colored wide leg pant, too, that I’m now wishing for. Color is my thing, and I get a leetle obsessed. If you’re in the mood to talk color all day, I’m your gal. Hit me up.

  1. I like the pants, but that color is not flattering on my cool winter skin tone and doesn’t blend well with the rest of my wardrobe, which is organized around that palette. Now if the pants were hunter green or burgundy…different story. Love the color in and of itself, just not for me.

  2. That dang coat! I think I need it in my life, but cannot figure out what size to purchase. Can you help please??? 5’7″ 120lbs. Gracias!

  3. I am literally wearing my brand new mustard yellow pants today! I was hesitant about buying them, but am trying to move move beyond the jeans everyday look. Two ladies complimented me when I walked into work today. Pairs great with neutrals, but looks really great with burgundy and dark green. Which are the winter colors I look best in. The pants I got are the Richmond ones from Boden. Wearing today with a burgundy sweater.

  4. Agreed! My pair are from Tradlands. I love them. Curious how they will transition to spring.

(I’m trying to get away from denim for environmental reasons – I miss them, though – I share the love of denim.)

  5. I have Madewell Emmetts in a hybrid rust/mustard color and they are amazing! I wear them with everything. (Pinks, roses, plaids.)

  6. I actually bought a pair of mustard denim from a Target this past fall. I always got compliments on them and it was nice to throw some color into my wardrobe. I put them away at the beginning of winter but might just have to pull them out next month. Thanks for the reminder!

  7. I have the straight leg Everlane pants, and I LOVE them. I also tried their wide legs, and Madewells wide legs. For me, a not super slim and tall person I felt liked a little less volume, though I love wide legs on others. I’m waiting on an off-white pair that was backordered. Fun to wear something other than jeans (and athleisure, lol). Great post, thanks!
