The funny thing about trench coats is that, while being somewhat of a statement piece with their long silhouette and structured detailing, they blend seamlessly like a chameleon to so many different outfits.

There’s a lot of different trench coats on the market right now, but the one that finally made me hit the purchase button was Gap’s Icon Trench Coat. With a relaxed, slightly oversized fit and the perfect shade of tan, this outer layer is making my outfits a lot more exciting.

Gap’s Icon Trench Is One Of The Most Versatile Layers In My Closet – Here’s How I’m Wearing It

I had been wanting a trench coat for a couple of years, but I always hesitated over their wearability. Had I known just how versatile the right trench truly is, I would have scooped one up ages ago.

Gaps relaxed Icon Trench Coat leaves enough space for thick layers underneath (helpful if you live in a colder climate) and is just the right amount of warmth when worn alone in warmer winter climates. This one has all the bells and whistles: a double button front, a wrap tie, the notch collar and (my favorite part) chic button cuffs. It even comes in an earthy green hue if you’re looking for something a touch more unique.

When I first received the coat, I had a very specific idea of how I wanted to wear it, and that was to throw over all of my everyday denim + oversized tee looks. I wanted a sharp, structured top layer that could make my throw-on-and-go outfits feel a bit more put together.

But once I had the coat, I began reaching for it more than anything. We’ve only experienced a small handful of cool days here in San Diego, but the mornings are getting brisk enough that I’ve been starting to test just how far this versatile coat can go. The verdict? I haven’t found an outfit that I don’t like paired with the Icon Trench Coat.

When you think of a top layer, the styling feels pretty straightforward – I mean, how many ways can you actually put on a coat? With Gap’s Icon Trench – it’s surprisingly a few.

The coat can, of course, be worn open (my typical go-to), but there’s the option of wearing it buttoned, buttoned and tied – and tied in multiple ways. Let’s not forget about the scrunched sleeves thanks to those perfectly placed wrist cuffs.

As it turns out, a trench coat has become one of the most versatile top layers I’ve ever owned. Date night outfits, loungewear looks, and everything in between, it all works. Here’s 5 of my favorite ways I’m wearing the coat right now.

1 | With Your Favorite Skirt (any length works!)

Skirts have quickly become a fall fashion favorite of mine (especially living in a warmer climate), and I think I was most delighted by how much I loved Gap’s Icon Trench Coat layered over them.

Since this coat falls long below my knee, any skirt length works. The mini skirt provides dimension and interest, but a maxi skirt peeking out from under the coat is undeniably chic.

A skirt + long coat pairing is fantastic for a place like San Diego that can be brisk in the fall and winter mornings but warm by the afternoons. If I were living someplace colder I would still rock these looks but add tights (and swap the tee for a cozier long sleeve).

A moment for the moto: If western boots were the hottest (unexpected) boot trend of spring and summer, moto boots are that for fall and winter. I can’t say I was immediately attracted to the style, but when I tried on this soft, stretchy pair I became more interested… and it turns out I LOVE how the rougher boot balances out a longer, modest skirt.

2 | Paired With Your Favorite Jeans

There’s something very satisfying about a trench coat paired with denim (this baggy pair from Madewell is SO GOOD). The colors together, no matter the wash of the denim, always looks like a match made in heaven.

Since the jeans and the coat are the star of the show in this outfit, pretty much any top goes. I love how this boucle sweater has sleeves long enough to peek out of the coat, adding extra texture, but even a simple sweatshirt would feel chic here.

3 | Wrapped Around Cozy Loungewear

A trench coat has a way of making even the laziest of outfits look expensive.

With a trench coat as the top layer, these sweater pants and matching shirt feels almost structured. Yet, thanks to the relaxed nature of the trench, there’s no sacrificing the comfort of the base ‘fit!

4 | Draped Over Your Dress + Heels

I love everything about this look, which feels a little silly to say since I put it together. But as someone who doesn’t often dress up, it’s easy for me to feel the most frustrated with my closet when I need to dress formally. This coat, however, is just what I’ve been missing.

A trench coat can pass as a formal top layer, yet has a very casual appeal to it at the same time (especially with how it feels on). This combo can be extremely comforting to anyone who doesn’t love to dress up, which is exactly why I love it!

5 | Layered With Your Workout Clothes

A tan trench coat seems to take on whatever character of the outfit you have on: chic and structured for dressier looks, warm and practical with loungewear, even sporty with athletic apparel.

One of my favorite parts of this coat is how easy it is to pull up the sleeves (thanks to those button cuffs!). And if my hair were down, throwing on a baseball cap makes this outfit even better and right-on-trend.
