What I Wore out of the House Last Week: 7 Summer Outfit Ideas

Hello, summer! Oh, how I’ve missed you. Dressing for summer in Michigan is all about staying cool and comfortable while also trying to look cute. For mean that means lots of flowy, linen dresses, my trusty denim cut-offs, pretty boho inspired tops and strappy sandals.

The temperature may be heating up but I’m all about *trying* to look cool while keeping cool this summer. Last week here in West Michigan started off mild enough with temperatures in the 70’s and ended up in the mid 90’s by the end of the week. During past summers when it starts to get really hot out all my fashion sense tends to go straight out of the window in favor of whatever makes me sweat the least. But, this year I’ve been really working on trying to build up a solid summer wardrobe with reliable pieces that are chic AND comfortable so that when that heat wave hits, I have options that aren’t just biker shorts and tank tops…

Summer outfit idea: Target strapless midi knit dress + linen button-down shirt, woven straw bag and strappy black sandals.

A Week’s Worth of Sizzling Summer Outfit Ideas

This summer I’m mixing and matching some of my most tried and true summer staples that have been in my closet for years with affordable linen-blend dresses. Throw in some super fun and economically priced handbags that I picked up at Target and Amazon and I’m finally feeling good about my Summer 2024 wardrobe vibes. Summer may just be getting started but I’m ready for it, so bring on the heat, baby. (I’m totally going to regret saying this next week when I’m in Florida visiting my parents where the heat index is currently 108).

Outfit 1: Strapless Midi Knit Dress + Linen Button-Down

This Target dress was a major score, not only is it only $25 and extremely flattering but I especially love ruched waist which is very forgiving in the tummy area while having a flattering fit. The fabric is stretchy, lightweight and soft.

NOTES: The reviews for this dress are in and they are all 5 star! Also, this dress is available in sizing up to 4X and is currently fully stocked. Easily dress it up with an oversized linen button-down.

Outfit 2: Floral Tank + Free People Cuffed Wide-Leg Jeans

Ooooh la-la. This Free People Dolce Vita Tank wins for my new favorite pretty tank top of this Summer. It’s a 100% lightweight cotton fabric so it’s extremely breathable and easy to move in. It also comes in six color options. I seriously want it in each color, especially in green and in red. It’s pretty affordable too so I’m probably going to order another one in a different color since I love this one so much.

Everyday outfit idea: A floral tank and cuffed wide-leg jeans with tan sandals.

NOTES: I am still loving and wearing these Free People Palmer jeans that I bought this past Spring. They are 100% cotton so they are lightweight and work for warmer tips. They ran large on me, I suggest ordering one size down.

Outfit 3: Midi Linen Dress + Strappy Sandals + Straw Tote

I’m living for Target’s summer linen dress selection right now. There are SO many good options right now that are just perfect for this hot weather and for my budget. This five-star rated linen midi sundress has a pretty criss-cross, tie-strap back. It also comes in black and brown polka-dot, is available up to size 4X. Best part: it’s $30!

NOTES: My favorite way to wear those pretty vintage handkerchiefs I find at the antique store: tie ’em on a straw tote for totally new bag vibes.

Outfit 4: Striped Tank + Free People Cuffed Denim Shorts + Fringe Belt Bag

I’ve finally added another pair of denim shorts into my rotation and lemme tell you, that is a BIG DEAL for me. It takes a lot for me to feel 100% comfortable in a pair of shorts, especially if they are denim. But these Free People Palmer shorts are 100% cotton and are actually pretty lightweight fabric so they don’t feel heavy or ride up like most denim shorts do.

NOTES: This fringe belt bag is the latest result of my addiction to scrolling Amazon for affordable handbags. It’s an economical way to try out bag trends and I don’t have to feel guilty when a cute new bag catches my eye.

Outfit 5: Flare Mini Linen Dress + Strappy Sandals + Checkered Belt Bag

Target FTW, again! Both the mini linen dress and the checkered belt bag are both recent finds from Target. The best part of this breezy summer fit? The total cost for this whole outfit (including the sandals) is under $100!

Summer style: Black mini linen dress + strappy black sandals and a checkered crossbody bag.

NOTES: I’ve been getting so much wearing out of these Beatris Ankle Strap sandals from Nordstrom. I find them to be extremely comfortable with their cushioned soles. I spend all day in these with no problems and they are currently 60% off for around $30.

Outfit 6: Rails Smocked Blouse + Denim Cut-Offs + Strappy Sandals

I loved this Rails Martine Smocked Ruffle Top so much that I also have it in black. I can’t resist a pretty, feminine top with the cutest details …especially when it’s also stretchy and comfortable.

Outfit idea: smocked white sleeveless blouse, denim shorts, a tan crossbody bag and white sandals.

NOTES: This top is deceivingly slightly cropped and looking back, I should have ordered a size up, I would have felt more comfortable in it.

Outfit 7: Floral Tie-Shoulder Tank + Free People Moxie Jeans

Both of these pieces have been absolute essentials in my closet for long time now. I wore these Free People Moxie jeans pretty much all winter and spring long and I’ve had this Endless Rose top for years.

Summer outfit idea: a floral tie-shoulder tank and Free People Moxie barrel jeans with black sandals.

NOTES: I love pairing a pretty top with feminine details with relaxed jeans. When worn together they create an unexpectedly fun and instantly interesting outfit.
